Transferring Audible tag info to new system.
« on: March 17, 2004, 03:48:18 pm »

Is there ANY way of transferring Audible tag information to the same files on a new system?  At the moment, the tag info for Audible files is apparently only in the library, and not in the files themselves.  This means that when I copy the files to a new system, the tags all revert to the original state and require me to tag them all again.

Some of my Audible files are "periodicals" that by default don't have any subject matter information in the title.  I therefore have to listen to a couple portions of each file and add this information to the title.  Now that I have quite a few of these files, it takes a LONG time to rename everything in MC.  I was hoping that there would be some way of "transferring" the tag information over so that I don't have to go through this process.

Is there possibly a trick that will allow this -- perhaps some way of "importing" the tag information for just these files into a new MC library?

Thanks,

Larry

Given that the "updated" tag information for Audible files CAN be transferred to an iPod, it seems like there should be a way to get this same information over to another MC system.  Isn't there some way of doing this -- even a workaround type of fix?

Thanks again,

We can't currently write Audible tags.

As a workaround, export an MPL playlist.  Then edit the filenames if you need for the new system, and then import that MPL playlist -- it'll have all the information about the files.

Thanks.  I was "almost" able to get this to fully work, but I need just a little more help.  I exported a playlist from the "master" system, then opened the file with notepad and used "find and replace" to edit all the paths for so that they'd point to the right spot on the new drive.  I then imported the playlist, which is where a slight wrinkle showed up.

All of the files imported as "wmv" files rather than "aa" files.  I was able to change the "media type" from video to audio, but the "file type" is still showing up as "wmv" for these files.  Oddly, the files will play now, and the tag changes all came over okay (which is of course very good news), but MC is still calling these files "wmv" files for some reason even though they all have an "aa" extension.  How do I get MC to see these files as "aa" files instead of "wmv" files (the "file type" field is not editable.)

Thanks again,

Larry

Is this a bug?  When using the above method to import Audible tags into a new system, the "aa" files are reported by MC as "wmv" files.  How can I get MC to "see" these files as the "aa" files that they actually are?

Thanks,

Matt -- your previous response has gotten me really close to solving this, but this one bug remains.  Do you (or does anyone else) have any information on the remaining issue described above?

Thanks again,

If someone from J River reads this, could you possibly ask Matt about the followup issue I mentioned above (i.e. MC seeing .aa files as .wmv files when using the method he described.)  Is this a bug?  Is there a workaround?

I can't get MC to stop saying these files are .wmv files using this method of transferring tags.

Thanks,

Matt -- if you are seeing this and simply don't know of a fix yet, please let me know.  I have no way of know if you're actually seeing my followup questions to your earlier response.

Thanks,

Maybe try editing the <File Type> block in the MPL to be AA instead of WMV.

If WMV isn't mentioned anywhere in the MPL, then send it to matt @ jriver.com and I'll see if I can reproduce MC switching the type.

Thanks Larry.

Thanks for the followup.

I don't see any mention of wmv in the MPL, so I'm sending you the MPL file as instructed.

Thank you!  (And thanks for the top notch support with MC in general -- other companies should take a lesson from you guys.)

Matt,

I tried the new build and it took care of the problem.  Thanks again -- this is going to save me a lot of time.
