Converting MP3 VBR to standard MP3
« on: March 29, 2004, 10:44:51 am »

I think I already know the answer  :'( but,

I have about 5500 VBR MP3s in my media library that I have ripped from my CD collection. I also have a Sony Clie that I plan on using as my MP3 player. Unfortunately I have recently discovered that the Sony Audio Player cannot play VBR files.

What is my best solution for changing the existing files. I really don't care about the extra disk space requirements now that I've added another 160GB HDD. Currently I have converted a view files for testing.

I guess my real question is, do I need to rerip for no quality loss or can I convert the VBR files with no apparent loss of quality.

I am happy with the VBR sound quality so lossless isn't a requirement.

You could create a second library for CBR MP3 files.  Import all the old files to it.  Convert what you want from VBR, but DON'T DELETE the originals.  Try a few before you do many.

If you convert lossy to lossy you will go down quite a bit....

Try a few, If you can't hear the difference, Then do them all. If you can then you will need to rerip

If you can't hear the difference after a second MP3 conversion, you need better audio equpiment... I tried that before, and it sounds like   :-X :-X :-X

MP3 VBR is part of the standard. Sounds like a pretty serious omission on your PDA. Have you considered replacing the music player software instead?

Here is a review of various Palm based MP3 players, some of them should work in the Clie. Even if it costs you $20, it's probably better than re-ripping your CDs or losing quality through transcoding.
