wireless music receivers and MC?
« on: April 05, 2004, 08:45:18 pm »

Hi All,

Currently, I have a laptop computer connected to my stereo equipment. I run the MC client on the laptop and the server on my computer in another room. The two communicate via WiFi.

For various reasons, I'd like to remove the laptop from the setup and replace it with some type of special-purpose wireless music receiver. I've looked at both the Sound Blaster receiver and the Squeeze Box. Both, unfortunately, require you to use their own server software.

Does anyone know of a solution which would allow me to continue to use MC?

Thanks.

Media Server supports Sony RoomLink (it is very beta). This should do what you want...

If you go this route, let me know and I'll tell you how to turn it on.

Would you be interested in an introduction to the people in charge of the Linksys Media Gateway?

Also, the Squeezebox and Roku players use open source server software, so it should be easy for MC to support them.

I use a Barix wireless exstreamer in coinjunction with their Virtual soundcard

You install the software soundcard on the server and set up a MC zone to use that card
The virtual soundcard then broadcasts up to 9 different audio streams (@ MP3 320kbps) which  wexstreamer then plays

have a look at www.exstreamer.com or www.barix.com

Hi John,

I have a Neuston MC-500 and I would like to use Media Server to send a stream to this box. Most of my files are FLAC so MS would need to transcode to WAV or MP3 for the stream to be usable.

Ideally, the PC running Media Server and Media Centre could playback the same stream or sync streams in some way.

Is this possible/planned?

Regards, Thomas.

Hi Thomas,

It may happen in the future, but is not available now.

Do you know if these are available in the US? I can't find them at bestbuy or e-bay.

Neuston are a Singaporean company and, AFAIK, the MC-500 has not yet been launched in the U.S. It is available in Asia, Europe and Australia - though SkunkWorks will ship internationally (currently free shipping).
It's based on the same chipset as the Pinnacle ShowCenter, if that's available stateside. For more information the MC-500 forum is your best bet.

Thank you for the reply John.

Only just noticed this - nobody suggested a TiVO - which can be networked wirelessly.  If you are in the market for a DVR, this is a great way to go (need v11 of MC if you want Internet Radio streaming to work well).

Another option might be the Keyspan USB Server http://www.keyspan.com/products/usb/server/, which is described as allowing you to connect any USB device to a wired or wireless network.  It sounds like this would allow someone to connect a USB sound card anywhere on a network and control it from a central location.  With Netremote and MC, this might be an easy way to distribute music throughout the house.  Has anyone tried this device?

Here are some reviews of Digital Audio Receivers from CNET:

The Squeezebox seems to be very popular with the editors AND the users alike.  Considering that it uses open source software, seems like a perfect candidate for MC10/11 plugin.

From the page you linked:
