.flac file support
« on: April 09, 2004, 10:30:54 pm »

I have been struggling with getting some flac files to work with media center for a couple of days.  I have installed the plugin from the sourceforge project, and it seems to have installed correctly, but when i try to import the songs from the directory they are in it seems to think that there are no files there.  I put a few wavs in the there to test and it finds them in the same directory fine.  I am currently using the lastest build of MC, but i have tried this with the last 3 buildsw and none have worked so far.  Does anyone have experience with the flac plugin?

thanks,
Kain

see...

The SourceForge plugin is for something else (like WinAmp)...not MC. There is no MC plugin there last I checked. Post a link to the SF plugin...I'm curious.

Kain,

If you click on the advanced button in the import dialog you can see that .flac is not one of the extensions it recognizes or looks for.  I think this is the problem.  What I do is search for .flac files in Windows Explorer.  Then select all the files, right-click on them, and choose "Media Center | Import" in the menu.  This seems to import just fine and adds the files to your library.

here is the link, it is at the bottom of the page.

http://flac.sourceforge.net/download.html

I have tried to import through windows explorer and it says no files found in that folder.  I am not sure what else to do, i am just converting them into wav files at the point, which is fine.

You have to select all the files and not a folder.  So, right click on the folder in Windows Explorer, select search, and look for .flac files.  In the list of files, select all of them and then import as I described above.

OK...you have the right plugin.

What have you been encoding the flac's with? In explorer, you highlite the flacs>right click>Media Center>Import and that's when you get "No files found"?

Just to make sure the plugin is installed correctly, click on this link..

http://www.monsterfang.com/MCinFLAC/in_FLAC.mjp

Save it to disk, then run it...

Just drag and drop them(from explorer) into MC's now playing pane and then import those files!

Actually, I tried both solutions just to see what happens (right click in explorer-etc, and drag and drop, and it didn't work for me. The files are not imported. I get a message: "files scanned: 12, files imported:0".

I do rip and play flac fine outside MC.

did you try contacting the developer of the plug-in?  Perhaps he'd be willing to help out.

I've found his plug-in to work perfectly.  FLAC files add to the database without error.  Still, I'd prefer native MC FLAC support (or a more robust plug-in).

Walter (aka Oblong) is a member here and is the author. Kain...check all your settings in Options related to importing...your the first I've heard with this kind of problem. Also, post your sys info from MC>Help>System Info.

The current plugin (in_flac.dll) is as robust & native as it gets...but it is only 1/2 the package. What is needed now is enc_flac.dll which Oblong can't write yet because JRiver has not released an SDK for it. I have to assume that this is why flac has not been added to MC's extensions list.

Matt...any ETA on an SDK?

Kain,
What operating system are you running?
What did you use to rip/encode the files?
I assume the files will playback in other players (WinAmp etc...) ?

If you are willing to download the FLAC install from http://flac.sourceforge.net there is a command line utility called metaflac that outputs information about the metadata in a flac file.  If you could run "metaflac --list myflac.flac" (substitute your flac file name for myflac.flac)  Capture the output and post it here.

If all else fails I can make a debug enabled version fo the plugin available for you to download and run.  It would log some debug info to a file whch you could email to me.

Walter...

I reinstalled the plugin tonight and used explorer to import the files and they worked this time.  Previously i had been selecting the folder and not the individual files, however, after reinstalling i tried just that and it worked...  not sure what the original issue was but they import and play fine now.

Thanks for all of the replies guys.

Ahh...has there been any move to get this SDK released?  Or any reason why JRiver hasn't released it?

An updated encoder SDK should be available sometime in the next few days.

Please remind us if it doesn't show up here by Friday:
