Recent MS Security Patches Cause Problems
« on: April 16, 2004, 10:33:26 am »

I use Auto Update for XP patches. Yesterday it installed the recent MS security patches.

I tried installing an app that used an msi file. I had odd errors regarding the MS Installer not being found. Od, the service was running when I looked.

No fix for this error worked.

I had other apps that quit working or grew bugs.

All of the problems seemed to have RPC and DTC in common.

I removed the patches for KB835732 and KB828741

All is normal again.

So, I'd recommend waiting for MS to re-release these two patches. Or if you install them, watch for errors and be ready to uninstall them.

Hope this helps someone avoid the problems and time involved.

And I don't think MS believed there were problems either.
But if you do install them and have problems, they would be the first to go.

MS releasing a flawed patch... NEVER HEARD OF SUCH A THING .. HA, HA ;D

Seriously; I recently had a strange go around with MS patches.  I too keep them all up to date, but here is what happened to me last month...

* Outlook suddenly started taking up to one minute to load.  It used to load very fast; in a few seconds.

* This would only happen after a boot up of the computer.  Succeeding Outlook loads were normal & very fast.  This would happen after every boot up of Win XP; the first one would be very slow & all others normal.

* I could find nothing on Google, or the MS Knowledge base on this problem.

* Then MS released SP3 for Office XP.  After installing it, the slow Outlook loading after boot up was gone.

Seems that one of the patches for Win XP caused the problem with Outlook XP & the SP3 patch for Office XP fixed it.

Kind of makes me nervous about patches.

Couple this with the onslaught of SPAM, Viruses, browser hijackings & misdirecting, & all the other c**p that is being thrown at us on a daily basis & again it makes me very nervous.  I fell like I am under attack by an unknown enemy who has no conscience of any kind & could not care less.

What ever happened to computers being fun to use ?
