Cannot play burnt mp3 cd with my dvd player.
« on: April 16, 2004, 10:53:46 am »

For the first time I tried to burn a mp3 cd with MC on a cd-rw. However when I try to play this cd on my Phlips DVDR 75 ( a dvd recorder which is capable of playing mp3 cd's in ISO 9660) it cannot be played. The only information I see on my tv screen  is Album1, track 1/0, playing time -,--,-- and on the display of the player T00  --,--,--. and nothing can be done with it.
The burning process goes normal, I have a Plextor 708 writer and used 2x speed and when I put the cd in my pc's cd player it plays without problems.
When I burn the same cd-rw with the same files with Nero Burning Rom there is no problem, that is I CAN play it on my Philips DVDR75.
So what am I doing wrong ?  I also tried the ISO version 2 but with the same negative result.

You need to use the "Close Disk" command in the CD burn action window Options menu.
By default, MC leaves a disk open for adding future sessions. However, consumer playback devices require the disk to be closed before they will see the content.
Just insert the cd that you burned and click the "Close Disk" command to close it.

Thanks JohnT but I already did that, and now once more, but with the same result.
Do you have other suggestions ?

I'm not sure what the problem would be. Did you verify that the disk got closed? See if MC still lets you write more files to it. If so, it's not closed.

Does the player support folders on the disk? You could experiment with disabling folder creation.

Are you sure your DVD player supports mp3 files, some don't

The disk is closed as MC can't write more tracks to it.
Where can I disable folder creation ? Btw I also tried it with only one single file/track and not a folder. The result is the same.
The strange thing is that when I burn a cd with Nero I CAN play it with my dvd player, so it looks like it hasn't to do with the player, correct me if I'm wrong.

To JustinChase: Yes, the manual says it can play mp3 cd's in ISO 9660with bitrates between 32 and 256kbs and sampling frequencies of 32, 44.1 and 48kHz.
Moreover, like I said when I burn the same cd-rw and the same tracks with Nero I can play them.

I'm not saying that it's Nero that is preventing a good burn, but it is possible.  We've seen problems before.  Try uninstalling Nero.

I did that in the meantime Jim, but no succes. Again I tried to burn only one file. The track is on the cd-rw and can be played on my pc, but not on the dvd player and on the display of the dvd player I don't see any track.

I wonder if the files have to be named a certain way.  Or tagged a certain way.  You might be able to tell by looking at the files Nero burned.

At first I looked in the manual of the dvd player and regarding mp3 cd's it says that notice has to be taken of the following (I translated it):
-ISO9660
-Indexstructure 8 levels
-filenames max 11 characters (8+3)
-ID3 tag version 1 1.1 With higher versions directory name is used for album and filename for trackname

The settings in Nero for burning are Iso level 1(max of 11=8+3char.)/mode1/ISO9660/ Joliet

When I burn a track with Nero and with MC and put the cd in my pc's cd player I see exactly the same filename, the one made with MC contains also a playlist.
However when I put them in my dvd player, with  the one made with Nero I see C (for track) 1 and on my tv sreen I see Album 1 and Track 1 with the time.
With the one made with MC I see only T (for Album) 00 and on the tv screen I see Album -- and Track ---- Time ----
Could it have to do with too long filenames ? The track I tried to burn for testing appears in the playlist with filename D\My Music\Artist Name\Album Name\Track Nr.-Track Name. Although I have to say that I also tried to shorten the file name with MagicFileRenamer to 8 characters, and burning it as that, but with the same negative result.
Or could the playlist cause the problem ? The one made with Nero doesn't have that after all ?
I keep hoping that you can help me further. Although it is not a big problem - I don't burn many mp3 cd's and I can do it with Nero - I can't stand it that MC cannot do the job.

It could be the directory structure that is causing problems.  MC has options for this when you burn.

Thanks Jim and Zevele.
Do you mean the CD/DVD Folder Naming options then or CD/DVD File Naming options ?
If so, could you (Jim) give me a clue which settings to try ? Or should I just try each setting and see what it will do ?

Meanwhile I have tried all kind of combinations regarding the file naming but without result.
I think I will have to give up. But I keep finding it strange that Nero can do the job without problems and  MC not.

Sorry about the problems.

I'm out of the office right now, but when I get back I could send you a special version of the burner control with some changes in it to see if we can figure out where the problem is occurring.

A few ideas I have are:

1. As you say, maybe the existence of the playlist file is causing a problem.

2. MC always places the "Joliet" extensions on the disk so both the strict ISO9660 and the more flexible Joliet file naming is available to the device that reads it. Maybe the existence of the Joliet extension causes a problem? If that's the case, it's a poorly written firmware on the DVD reader since the spec. allows the Joliet to be totally hidden from devices that don't support it.

3. Perhaps the ISO9660 header that MC writes out is missing something that the DVD reader wants to see.

One other question:
In Nero, do you have the option enabled that asks if you want the filenames to NOT have the ISO version number appended (";1")? By default, the version number is always appended (even though you won't see it when the filenames are displayed). Nero allows turning this off.
Also, which wizard are you using in Nero for burning the CD?

Thanks!

Hi John,
For a test I again burnt one track with Nero (version 5.5.10.56) and used the Nero Wizard, starting with a choice between cd or dvd (where I choose cd of course)>compile a new cd>data cd> new data cd.
In the burn settings (no multisession checked), I have the following settings:
File/directory name length: Iso level 1
Format: mode 1
Character: ISO 9660
Joliet: checked (!)
Under "Relax ISO Restriction" there is indeed an option for " Do not add the ";1" ISO file version extension", but I have that UNchecked.
After burning and looking at it in Windows Explorer it has the name "01-Cyberia"  (is the name of a track from an album by Afrocelt).
When I put the cd in my dvd recorder it can be played without a problem.
On the display I see T01 first and it immediately changes to C01 and begins to play. (T stands for albumnumber and C for tracknumber). However when I burn with MC, it says T00 and doesn't do a thing.
I hope you can help me further. Like I said before, of course I can burn with Nero, but it would be much easier if it was possible with MC.

Btw, I don't see a possibilty to delete the playlist from a cd burnt with MC. Is this anyhow possible ?

I had the same sort of problem a while ago with 9.1.

Nero and Roxio mp3 CD's worked in my DVD player but MC's didn't.
The problem with MC CD's was that I couldn't navigate between folders. The same contents with the same folder structure was ok when burned with Nero or Roxio.

I did post at the time but never found a solution.

I was using default settings for all apps as I remember.

Sorry it's not a solution.

No, but if that turns out to be the problem we could easily make it optional. Please send me an email and I'll send you a cd writer control with some changes made to it.

Thanks,

@JohnT,
Did you get my pm ? I ask, because I didn't hear from you anymore. Or do you need some more time for it ? If so,  I am sorry for seeming impatient. Of course I will have more patience then.

Once again: I don't want to seem impatient, but why doesn't JohnT response anymore ?
