"Violent agreement" <- :o

Holy cow, no need for violence.

We have contacted Rio to see if they will give us what we need to customize a plugin with playlist support. If they send it, we will do it. The lack of full featured support with WMDM is a product of both the state of the WMDM SDK and Rio's implementation of it, both of which are out of our control.

Add my voice to those requesting (even basic) support for the Karma...

J,

Basic support for the Karma is already in MC 10. Go to Tools->Options->Devices and check the box for 'Enable WMDM support' and then Karma should be visible in the MC tree.

We want OGG and FLAC support.
We want MC to support playlist copy, so when I drag a playlist I will copy the .m3u file to the Karma as well as the files.
We want a sync feature.
We want the support to work using Ethernet, so ppl how have old USB 1 PC can still enjoy speedy transfer.
We want MC to be able to read the karma internal databases, so it would update the "last time played" tag.

dbpoweramp have rolled out karma support a while back.

I only wish the developers will give more attention to karma support.

True or False,

Karma works with MC when WMDM support is enabled?

If true, missing features include support for playlists and perhaps others?

Hi Steve,

True: Karma does communicate with MC with WMDM support enabled. And this communication has been improved with v10 and its recent builds (at least for me). But I think I share the desires of my fellow Karma-users to not only have support for playlists, but to make the syncing process much easier. Right now, if I don't keep track of which tunes are on the Karma, I can potentially keep uploading the same song over and over again. This means a lot of admin work on my side using custom fields and still it can take a few hours to sort through what's been upload and deleted.

As always, I appreciate the work you all are doing and hope that a plug-in will be available soon.

Cheers,

GDaddy,

Thanks for the post. Right click on your Karma and check out the option for 'Synchronization'. I think this will help in solving your issue regarding your files. If you create playlists/smartlists to organize your files, the sync will keep things up to date for you.

I just tried to synchronize....

I reformatted my karma,
selected a smartlist to synchronize and everything was transferred to my karma succesfully

If I now select synchronize again, with the same smartlist.
The I see '-17.1 Gb available after sync' and it tells me 'available space exceeded'

Marcel,

This is most likely due to the information that Karma makes available via the WMDM interface. When viewing the files on the Karma from MC, take note of what is reported for the Name, Artist, Album, Genre and Track Number fields. Is it the same as what is reported for the files in MC? My guess is no. The result is that MC will try to resend the files which is why your available space is exceeded. Can you confirm this?

If I look at :

Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\All Content
I see for example :
Name : A Campfire Song.mp3
(Artist/Album/Genre/Track#/Duration/Bitrate etc.) are all empty

so you are correct that this doesn't match what MC reports

Marcel,

This is the problem. MC makes decisions about what files to send or delete based on matching the tag information. If you can, run WMP and verify that it also does not report any of this information. If not, it is a limitation of the interface Rio has written for WMDM.

Thanks,

As I said above,If I look at :
Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\All Content
I see only on the right side of the screen :
Name : A Campfire Song.mp3
(Artist/Album/Genre/Track#/Duration/Bitrate etc.) are all empty

BUT

If I look at
Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\Album
Then I get a tree view with all the correct album names on the left

If I look at
Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\Artist
Then I get a tree view with all the artist names on the left

If I look at
Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\Genre
Then I get a tree view with all the genre names and artist names below that on the left

which means to me, that MC does read the artist names/album names/genres from somewhere ? (although you never see it on the right side)

Marcel,

If you can, please test with Windows Media Player. I would  if I could, but I do not have a Karma. My guess is that you will see the same behavior with WMP which points the finger of this inconsistent behavior at Rio.

Our options are to get an SDK from Rio (they have not responded yet) or ask them to improve their support via WMDM (which I will do).

Hi steve,

another option is to use the information already available to generate the missing information to get synchronization going :

on the left side of the screen :
click
Drives & Devices\Rio Karma\Artist
this gives you a list of all the artist names

click on an artist name in the tree
this gives you a list of all the album names

click on an album name, then on the right of the screens the tracks for the album appear

the name field is the track name with '.mp3' appended. (it is NOT the same as the filename of the mp3 file on the PC hard disk used in MC)

for example I see :

Name :
Valley Of The Kings.mp3

Filename
Rio Karma\Artist\Marc Cohn\Burning The Daze\Valley Of The Kings.mp3

the files on my PC hard disk for MC are not organized like above...

so you can deduce the missing information from above filename as well !

so artist name/album name/track name are available which should be enough to get synchronize working  :)

Marcel,

The solution you propose is possible, but not very practical. It is a solution for one player and the design of our WMDM support is for many players. In this instance, the solution is a fix for a flaw in the implementation of WMDM support by Rio. It is not something we will do at this time.

Sorry.

J,

Karma is not a low priority but our options are limited.  Rio supplies limited support for Karma through the standard Windows WMDM interface which we support. They possibly supply additional functionality through a custom interface which they have been unwilling to disclose to us. There may be a way to create somekind of modified solution without Rio's help, but that is labor intensive and we are very busy. We will try to come up with something or in a best case, Rio will be responsive and we can do something quickly.

I can't believe that you have the rio logo in the "about MC" screen (help > about MC), and you still can get no cooperation from Rio to get a karma plugin.

I'm really dissapointed with the way this is handled. There is a good amount of interest in this and other MC forums, and you haven't been able to develop the plugin in more than one year.

urlwolf,

Here is a summary of what we will and won't support in regards to portable devices at this time...

1) All WMDM compatible devices.

2) In addition to (1) we support m3u playlists for any players which appear to your system as a removable or fixed drive and which support m3u playlists.

3) Any device that handles DRM file protection and provides an SDK for development of plugins.

These are all relatively recent changes in MC 11. If you have a Karma (we don't) please test it with MC 11 and lets look at what needs to be done or not from there.

Has anyone tried the Karma with MC11?

Does it work at all?  Limitations/problems?

I'm still running MC9 and have a Karma on the way, I want to know if I should get 11...
