Skipping is Getting Worse
« on: November 14, 2002, 04:35:57 pm »

Using MediaJukeBox 8.0.388, Millenium edition (I know, I know, it came on the system when I bought it), 392mb of memory, 1.2gHz AMD Athlon processor.

Skipping and stuttering while playing mp3 files (that's all I play) has gotten worse over time.  I did a complete restore with the new Compaq restore CD and still have the skipping problem.  The problem is very bad at the beginning of most songs.

There does seem to be some improvement if I close every application and just run MediaJukeBox, but playback continues to be problematic.  Since I use MediaJukeBox while working, closing every application is not the solution, especially since the problem exists with no other applications running.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Try changing the settings for playback

more skip resistant<--->more responsive

Try changing playback between directsound and wave out.

Sound card drivers.

Thanks JimH,

Changed from Wave Out(default) to Direct Sound with a drastic improvement in playback smoothness.  Opened a PDF file and large MicroSoft Word document simultaneously during playback with only a minor negative effect to playback.

Had experimented with:
more skip resistant<--->more responsive
before original post with only negative results.

Is there a downside in changing output from Wave Out(default) to Direct Sound?

Otherwise all is good for now.  Thanks so much.  The whole neighborhood was probably getting tired of hearing that skipping!

Damn, it's back!

I was just leaning back with my arms behind my head listening to a little George Harrison and enjoying the new and improved playback of my system when all of a sudden there were three skips within five seconds, and two more just now.  Do you think that it's a Hare Krishna issue?  If not, any other suggestions?

Copy and paste your sys info from Help>System Info in a post here. Are you current (latest versions) on everything that is relevant?

Do this...(assuming you haven't)

Backup license
Uninstall MJ
Update ME (Service Packs?), ASPI (v4.72), soundcard drivers, DirectX, etc.
Reinstall MJ
Restore license

Maybe you've done all of this already...if so then I'm clueless...

For your computer you ought to have a real OS like W2k (even W98SE might be better than what you have...heard nothing good about ME)

When I bought the restore disk from Compaq, I also bought all of the update drivers for Windows XP for my computer model and I've purchased a copy of Windows XP Professional.  Just haven't installed because of the potential hassle.  Is there any chance that MJ will work better under XP Pro?

According to my Vegas bookie, the odds for MJ running better are 1027 to 1 under W2k (about the same odds as Steelers winning Superbowl), 1020 to 1 under XP. Added bonus is EVERYTHING will run better.

It's worth the hassle of installing. I would do it as a clean install (not as an upgrade to Millen Ed).

In my experience, XP and 2000 are equally stable.  The problem you have is probably in the driver area.

ME is definitely less of an OS.

Thanks again folks.  All is well.

Now running XP Pro with great success.  I have been trying to tax the operating system in an attempt to make playback skip but have been unable to thwart MJ and XP.  What a difference.

Tonight I think the neighborhood would like to hear some Archies and maybe a little Meatloaf.
