MC 10.0.132: High CPU Usage During Playback Bug
« on: May 07, 2004, 09:30:18 pm »

Just upgraded from version 129.  The very first song that I played was one that played just fine, it's a 160kbps, Media Center took up 98% of the CPU to play... The song never skipped, but at that usage I can do nothing else but listen....  The progress bar did skip though.  All other songs I've tried since do the same thing... between 90-98% CPU Usage.....

Reverted back to version 129 and usage with it is between 10-20%.

Just installed and played some mp3 and ape, no high usage here. Running 10-15%
What type files were you playing?

It's possible that some of the performance tuning doesn't work as expected during normal audio playback (vs converting, burning, analyzing, etc.) under some special circumstance.

However, I just tried on an AMD 1.2 playing APE files over the network, and with MC minimized, CPU usage was around %1-2.  With my 3 Ghz P4, CPU usage stays at 0% when playing.

Is there anything special about your configuration? (DSP, file location, output settings, etc.)  Also, does anyone else see this?

(p.s. please benchmark CPU usage with MC minimized so GUI drawing doesn't interfere)

3 to 5% playing APE files here (AMD XP 2800+).  Last time I checked (probably around 10.0.128) it was running 5 to 7%.

Also 3-5% play APE files when minimized.

U try checking your Device Manager and see whether your hdd is running at UDMA 5 or PIO mode?

That might be the problem.

I am having this problem also.  Upgraded to 10.0.132 and can not play any files.  They play but skip and CPU usage is at 100%.  I recieved the following error message:

"Internal play buffer error: playing buffer accumulated too much spent data.
Please report this error to JRiver as soon as possible so that it can be fixed."

Nearly the entire time the song was playing, it said buffering... below the song title in the player window.  I tried this with some short songs and some long classical pieces, same results.  Also tried rebooting just for the heck of it and no improvement.

Not sure what this means and how to find out.  Running XP and drive properties does not show this or I'm looking in the wrong place.

Going to revert to 10.0.122 since it is the newest back step I have and was working okay.

BTW, Love this program, keep up the good work.

So, I started going backwards, and 10.0.131 exhibits exactly the same behavior. (did not see the memory buffer error)   Skipped 130 and have installed 10.0.129 and it works fine.  CPU usage hovering around 10% with MC minimimzed and I can actually do something else while music is playing.

I have anywhere between 13% and 22% playing mp3s. I peaked during  track change to 44%.

Mine is at 22% right now playing a 192kbs mp3. I don't know what normal is but it certainly not the 0% Matt is reporting.

Disregard the CPU stat below. MC always reports it wrong for some reason.

I played around with different filetypes. CPU usage was only 5-7% with an ape files, 8-9% with wma, 5-7% with ogg, and 15-22% with mp3. That surprises me as I was always told that Ogg was more cpu intensive than mp3.

I'm seeing this problem as well, and it seems to be related to using the "Direct Sound" output setting in MC as opposed to using "Wave."  When I use the "Direct Sound" setting and play a 160kbps mp3, I get between about 98% and 100% CPU usage (it takes several seconds just to stop it from playing.)

I tried both a SBLive and an Audigy, with the latest drivers.

Hmmm, I'm using DirectSound output and the DirectX Plugin to run Izotope Ozone 3.

The only difference I see is that I use the KX drivers for my Audigy, not the Creative drivers. Ever try them?

Update:  I Reinstalled version 332 and switched my sound output mode from Direct Sound over to Wave Out and no more problems with the CPU usage.  With Wave Out it is between 8-15% usage on the same songs that were killing the CPU with Direct Sound.... so something to do with Direct Sound....

I reverted to 129 and the problem went away.  I then fully uninstalled MC and reinstalled 132, and the problem came back.  It seems to be an issue with 132 and direct sound.

I haven't tried the KX drivers, but since this issue just popped up with one of the recent MC releases, I don't want to mess around with drivers when the evidence points to MC as the culprit.

Just to follow up on this, I tested this on another system and it did not have this issue.  The system that had the problem was a P3 850 with an SBLive, and also an Audigy (I switched the SBLive to an Audigy and it did the same thing.)  The system that does NOT have the problem is a P4 2.5Gig with an Audigy2.

I seem to have the same problem - usage jumps from about 4% on MC idle to about 96% on playing a WMA or MP3 - making my old CPU pretty well unusable. (V.1320) I will try going back to an older one.
