Why Can't I Play or Import My "APE" Files?
« on: May 31, 2004, 06:35:02 pm »

I'm using the current version of MJ (8.0.400) and "File Associations" is setup to take control over "ape" files.  When displayed in "Windows Explorer", my "ape" files are associated with MJ's icon.

When I highlight the files and use "Windows Explorer's" rt. click/context menu and choose "Play", MJ displays a dialog box stating "Please select files(s) to play".  After "ok'ing" dialog boxes, MJ shows no tracks in "Playing Now".

I then chose to import them directly into MJ and they wouldn't successful import.

I was able to successfully play the store-bought CD in MJ.  Wanting to save certain tracks, I used EAC (v0.95 prebeta 3) to "rip" successfully using "APE" (v3.99) compression.

Would anyone know what the problem may be here?  Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Did you try ripping with MJ?

Thx for the reply JimH.

No I didn't, I'll try it.

Audio quality is most important to me, that's why I don't use lossy compression.  Not knowing enough about MJ's ripping process/quality, I went with EAC's reputation along with secure ripping.  I use MJ for it's database organization capabilities.

You'll have to upgrade to Media Center for the latest Monkey's Audio support.

http://www.jrmediacenter.com

MC has great built-in APE support and also has secure ripping that's as or more secure than EAC.

Thanks ballen.

Thanks Matt for your reply.

I followed JimH's suggestion to rip from within MJ and the subsequent "ape" files were created & played successfully.  How can I determine what version of "APE" is being used here?  Looked into the "Plugins" directory and I only found "dll's" which aren't helpful in determining the version.

In regards to upgrading to MC, I tried it when it first came out and it's too cluttered with other features I have no need for.  I only need an application which will organize & tag which MJ does fine.  I've been using EAC (ripping), Nero (burning) and MJ (organization).  Maybe I'm "old school", but my experience is that applications that try to be "all things for everyone" make compromises along the way affecting other features.  It's the nature of the beast.

First, we had to pay to upgrade to MC9 and now additional payment for MC10.  Why should I continue paying upgrades for features that aren't usefull to me?

Appreciate all the assistance and any feedback you might have.

Sincerely,

You don't need to pay.  You can keep using MJ.

If you want the latest APE support (which you may not need), you can upgrade.

It's up to you.

Thanks JimH for your responses.  I know the post was a little lengthy but there was a question hidden in there somewhere.   ;)

What version of "APE" is used within MJ 8.0.400?

Take Care,

MJ uses Monkey's Audio 3.97.

Monkey's Audio 3.99 is current.

And MC really does have state-of-the-art secure ripping and playback.

Thanks Matt for replying.

In regards to "APE", would I be looking to upgrade to version 9 or 10?  They both have different upgrade costs as I understand it but the version differences may have nothing to do with "APE".

Thanks again to both you & JimH for your support.   ;)

I'd really recommend spending some time with MC 10.

Were quite proud of it, and it has unparalleled APE support.
