mp3 encoder (LAME) won't install
« on: November 08, 2002, 08:52:06 pm »

I have tried to install the mp3 encoder (LAME) plugin for version 8.  I get the message that the 'package  was successfully installed', but I still don't see the mp3 option in the list of available encoders.
Can someone please provide a solution?
- Other plugins have installed fine.
Thanks.

Yeah... I've just installed MJ and have a similar problem.  After supposedly installing the MP3 plug-in, I then try to rip a CD and get:

'Cannot create plug-in 'MP3 Encoder'.  Error 80040154'

Can anyone tell me what i need to do solve the problem.

Thanks

Download the enc_mp3.zip from here: http://www.musicex.com/mediajukebox/mj_data/plugins/enc_mp3.zip
zipped to the plugins folder in MJ directory, now make this two registry strings

for Normal MP3:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\JRiver\Music Exchange\1.0\Media Jukebox\Plugins\Encoders\MP3 Encoder]
"CLSID"="{3FC1631E-50A1-4480-9D5D-A919484A0DF2}"

and for MP3VBR:

No, this is not the way to do it.
I have just spent money on software that does not do its job.  I am not mucking about with the Windows Registry.  This is supposed to be a user-friendly piece of software.

Please provide a version of this software that is bug-free.

I think the problem with this is because MJ9 it uses different places in the registry to save the strings, wait a few days and the problem is solved

Please try downloading the MP3 plug-in again.  We broke the installation yesterday afternoon.  It should be fixed now.  Sorry for the problem.

I have purchased Version 8 today. I didn't work (as above). I have uninstalled it.  Can I know download the package from your website, and expect it to work?
I am not mucking about with an MP3 plug in, or the Windows Registry. I just want to download a piece of software that does what is says it you advertise.
How simple (or difficult) can that be?
So is the software that is available to download now fixed, or not ?

And to answer my own question, I just downloaded your software, re-installed it, and it still doesn't record to MP3 without an error message. Pretty disappointing for such a well rated product. I hope you fix it PROPERLY soon.

Gordon,
We didn't try to break it, as you seem to imply.

Is it simple?  No.  The problem was a single line in an installation script that is part of the plug-in download.  I fixed it by adding two characters.  I believe it works now.  But I suggest you wait until someone confirms that before you waste any more of your time.

Your patience will be appreciated.

Don't try doing anything manually.  Just click on the link on the downloads page.

I have tried everything people have listed here. I can see the .dll file in the plugins directory in windows explorer, but it is still not recognized by the plugin manager. What gives?? ?

I uninstalled the program, Reinstalled (express) Then, I went to the plugin manager and clicked on Encoders. I didn't find the Mp3 encoders so I went to the encoders plugin page and clicked the link. It didn't work.

I tried again this morning, just in case, and can now see the .dll for encoding MP3's.

The plug-in manager still won't install it though.

Will try again tomorrow.

To all who have had this problem, I apologize.

The reason it happened is that we've moved everything around in the registry in order to support people who want to have multiple users on the same machine using MJ.  It's tricky to do because MJ uses a lot of small programs and plug-ins to do its work.  It is double complicated because we have two versions of MJ now (8 and 9).

Ordinarily, we'd fix it within a few hours of the time it happened, but this happened on Friday evening.  So Monday by mid-morning it will be fixed.

Again, I'm very sorry for the inconvenience.

Greece is a long ways from Minneapolis (now on Central Standard Time).  Mid-morning Monday is still about 5 to 6 hours from now.  Perhaps Greece operates like an Italian Corporation?  http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=general;action=display;num=1036458414  If so, take a break; life is good.

I did try the registry entry fix that was posted.  I saved the listings as text, then used regedit to import into the registry.  At that point, the encoder showed in the list, but I received the Error: 80040154 message.

So I went to plug in manager, and used add plug in.  I found Enc_mp3.dll, and added it.
Now the mp3 encoder works!

Thanks for all the info.

Sadly my Plug in Manger still won't recognise the dll.  It downloads and is stored in the appropriate directory, the plug in manager sees it, but doesn't seem to want to add it.

Maybe the patches take longer to get to Scotland?!

Any ideas?

The DLL copies over and is seen by the Plug In Manager, but when you try to add it - nothing.

No registry entries are written.  I have just added in the registry entries suggested earlier in this topic and the DLL has now been added to the Plug In Manager.  I am just about to test it to see if it works.

Yay, I was finally able to get the MP3 encoder plugin to install, but now when I select "custom" from the quality field, i don't get a popup window asking for the command line when i click "advanced." i get the a list with "normal, hi speed, hi quality" instead.

Still am unable to get the command line window to show up for MP3 VBR - it shows up for OGG custom, though. Have reinstalled MP3 plugin twice to no avail.

I had the "cannot create plug-in" error and re-downloaded the plug-in, which installed just fine (on Windows XP).

But as Jakobluck mentionned, I can't get the LAME "command line" (custom->advanced) settings window. Instead, I get the "Normal / High speed / High quality" choice window. No way to use the "--alt-preset" options.

You can use the Lame external encoder if you download our "external encoder plug-in" from this page:

Well, yes, I guess I can do so (though it gets tricky when dealing with non-ASCII characters in filenames, since the encoding goes through the command line)... but as far as I remember, one could pass the "--alt-preset" option in the "Advanced" window when one chose the "Custom" quality setting (though I can't tell WHEN it changed, whether because of the plug-in issue or through an update of MJ itself).

Why wouldn't this (useful) feature  be available anylonger ?

On the other hand, if one has a correspondance table between MJ's quality/avanced settings and LAME presets... (thing is, most of the articles you find about MP3 encoding quality using LAME refer to this "presets")

So ?
