Ripping to 1 large MP3 file
« on: November 11, 2002, 04:09:00 am »

I am interested in ripping a CD that is a continuious mix into 1 MP3 file so as to not have interuptions while playing of the file. Can MJ do this and if yes, how do I go about doing this?

No way to keep it from splitting tracks when doing digital rips (AFAIK). The only I know to prevent splitting is to do line-in recording. I requested in the wish list some time ago for this "splitless" ability. Maybe in v9?

Workaround for me has been to use EAC (it is very precise on track starts & endings) to rip the tracks then use it's wave editor to glue the wav's together. THEN I encode.

I'd be careful using one large MP3 file unless you have a fast system and a lot of RAM.  Your system may have to buffer while playing, and you may run into some problems.

Very true. I have a 160 kb/s mp3 of Tommy - Original Soundtrack. File size is 106MB (1 hr 30 mins long). No problemo on machine w/ 256 MB RAM (1.1 GHz PIII) running W2k.

My "glueing" operation also took place on that machine.

Xen-Uno,

I also get this reply from EAC's forum. You might want to give it a try. Works great:

Select "Copy Image & Create CueSheet -> Compressed"

... btw, set the compression options first.

And thanks for everybody's imput.

So this creates one big, trackless file? Totally Tubular!!!

Thanks for the info. I'll try it!

Xenno

PS: Have you tried it with just two tracks.
For instance, on the Cars 1st album, "Moving In Stereo" blends seamlessly into "All Mixed Up". I'd like to preserve that (which I did by glueing).

In EAC, you can also use the Copy Range feature, which will let you rip two (or more) tracks as one file, as well as rip sections of a single track.

Thanks 'sauce

I'll have to take a closer look at all the EAC options.

I think a shotgun wedding of EAC to MJ is in order here, don't you?

xen,
You're barking up the wrong tree.  JohnT is The Ripper here.

Do I think it's a good idea?  Aw, well, uhem, well maybe yes, maybe no.  I don't hear a public outcry.

I would love to see cue sheet support in MJ. It's been requested in the forums quite a few times and it's on the wishlist twice. IMO, it handily addresses the issue of gapless playback, which seems to be an issue for classical recordings, dance/techno mixes, live concerts, and party-mode playback.

In EAC...

After trying both methods as proposed by dgness & rocketsauce....'sauce's Copy Range method is by far the fastest and least disk intensive. It does create a file called range.ogg (in my case) and randomly puts one of the track names in the Track Title tag...but both are easily edited in MJ. Other than that it works flawlessly.

Gapless is really only an issue with MP3, as far as I know.  It seems that the main reason to use MP3 is for listening on a portable or sharing.  I don't know, do any portable MP3 players support image + cue sheet playback?  So, since an image + cue sheet would probably only be used for playback on a computer, why not just use one of the other formats (OGG, MPC, APE) that doesn't have problems with gapless playback?

Rob

BTW Xen, the Tommy soundtrack is one of my top 10 all time favorite albums.   8)

For me, APE is space-inefficient, OGG is not optimized for higher bitrates, and for all 3 I don't want to re-rip several hundred CD's. I don't know if there are portables that support CUE sheets or not - it's not relevant to my wish for MJ's support.
