New AMG Website
« on: July 13, 2004, 01:13:52 am »

Hi Folks,

Just to announce that the new look for one of  the favourite music addicts website is online http://www.allmusic.com
Also available from within MC (PlayingNow/Artist Info).

A nice look with all the infos at your fingertips. There is now an artist picture browser and a lot to discover.
Also checkout the explorer interface at the top of the page.

Ok, it's new and a bit buggy at places. In particular, it's not working very nicely with Mozilla / Firefox. Guess it will get better with time.

Have a great day,

C.

One tip: don't forget to associate the windows media (asf...) file type with MC so that you can enjoy the AMG music samples from within MC :)

What have they done??  This is awful!  A high profile site like AMG should be designing to standards and not producing a horrible jscript heavy site like this.  Firefox support is dire... It is horrible and clunky.  I hope these are just teething problems... I think I will be using Music Moz almost exclusively now...

Hi Nocode,

I think you're a bit severe with AMG's new look ;)
However it is true that it is - for now - next to unusable with Mozilla/firefox because of the numerous dynamical contents (jscript stuff). I guess it will improve with time.

BTW it looks like the old AMG site is still available at this URL : http://allmusic.com/ (for how long ??)
Edit(07/15) : the link does not point to the old website anymore !

Music Moz is a nice attempt but the amount of music information is (for now) far from what is already availlable in AMG.

Bonne Journée,

Christian

Hey Christian,

I am not knocking the new look per se just the terrible way it has been coded :)  I cannot see anything they are doing that could not have been acheived using standards compliant ECMAScript and CSS.  If high profile sites are not going to play by the rules then why should bedroom web coders??  I am afraid standards compliant coding is one of my soap box issues :)  Sorry if you thought I was being overly critical.  The site looks nice in IE when it is working :)  Unfortunately for someone like myself who uses FF almost exclusively it has become next to useless until they fix the issues... and if something doesn't work in FF then this shows bad coding to the standards as FF is the most standards compliant browser...
Rant over :)

Unfortunately, IE is the de facto standard.  In my opinion, if it works with IE, then it's up to FF to be compliant with that standard.  It's too bad, I agree, but Microsoft does set standards.  It's even worse that they try to use them to squash their worthy competitors (like Sun with Java) but that is the world we live in.

I have to agree with NoCodeUK.  I use Firefox exclusivley and will not be switching back.

IE has by far the largest market share, but standards are there for a reason.  With regards to IE setting its own standards, that may be true to some extent, but those standards are not published or documented anywhere.

If major websites refuse to follow the published standards for web design, then quite simply, I will not be visiting them.

Maybe when enough people stop using IE, things will start changing.  And, if I remember correctly, I read that IE is no longer under development.

If there wasn't an active, well-managed standards organization publishing clear standards then we would need/have room for a defacto standard.  I have no real problem with Microsoft's standard compliance -- they're pretty good.

I have a big problem with people who flagrantly cause machines to emit non-compliant code.

The site works fine with Maxthon... www.maxthon.com

Maybe it's time to switch to a browser that works with all sites...

Maxthon is an IE based browser.  Any of the security problems that exist in IE will also exist in Maxthon.  This is the primary reason people use non-IE browsers like Firefox and Opera.

Yes it is BASED on IE, and No it does not have all the faults of IE.

That's like saying all the versions of Linux have the same faults.

Linux is open source software (which means anyone can change the source code).  IE is proprietary (source code is not available to the public).  When you build a browser based on IE, you are including, in your browser, all of the faults that exist in the IE engine.  This cannot be compared to different versions of Linux.

I'm not going to argue this point further as it seems to be fruitless.  If you're happy with Maxthor, then by all means keep using it.

I read yesterday that their market share is down to 94%.

Getting Back to The website...

It's a nice layout... but Dreadfully slow....

Can't wait till they resolve there issues.... You would think that they would have addressed them prior to the upgrade.....

Oh well.

What about how this AMG update affects MC plug-ins like Artist Bios Finder and aTagger?  Auto tagging using AMG's impressive database currently appears impossible.

aTagger is down... King Sparta's bios finder I think uses multiple sources... His should still work.

For MC to properly work with AMG Data JRiver would need to pay them a license fee.  I looked in to this in the past for a plugin and their charges are ridiculous.  Hence why it appears in WMP cos MS can afford their prices and not much else :)

BTW it looks like the old AMG site is still available at this URL : http://allmusic.com/ (for how long ??)

Is it possible to change a parameter in MC to point to this version of the website for looking up artist info?

(if not, consider this a feature request!)

EDIT:  when I tried http://allmusic.com, I got the new site anyway.  It is very slow for me and does not work in FireFox very well at all.  Two strikes for me.

New layout looks nice but overall I'm disappointed. Lots of drilling down the web site [involves lots of page loading] to get what was on the front page before - guess they make more in advertising that way. :(

Give me back the old amg! I use IE and it is very slooow. 10-15 secs to turn a page. I certainly miss the simplicity of the old version.

Why do devolpers seem to think that making things more complicated is always progress?? More  is not always better, hence I still use MC 9.0; its simple, stable and efficient.

Yep, and it seems to be better today under Mozilla/firefox...
less Jscript console errors and better table handling.

Looks like they are actively working on the site.

But, yes, it is really slower that the good old AMG.

Unusably slow at the moment, although it has improved in Firefox.  However, every time I click on a link it pulls up RoboForm's Passcard editor which is not good.

Using MyIE2 usually, started IE to be sure, without any result.

Anybody out there who is searching by 'name', clicks 'go' and get's one single result? Or any reaction? (Yes, I'm logged in).

Just curious.

amg is working faster now and working better in Firefox.

JRiver -- can you make the "Artist Info" custom, izable so that we can go right to the album page rather than having to drill down.

ALternatively, add another entry for "album Info" that tries to go to the album rather than the artist in AMG.

Hope you can!!
