This license has been restored too many times
« on: July 24, 2004, 03:46:56 pm »

Hi,

I just reinstalled the os's on all of my computers and now I am having some issues getting mediacenter back up and running.  When I try to reinstall from the internet it says this license file has expired or has been used too many times, and I don't have an .mjr file to restore from.

what do i need to do to get MC registered?

Thanks,
Kain

That is the place where i entered the code that was emailed to me, and it said that it had expired or had been used too many times.

How many times have you used the restore?

Also are you using Internet Explorer?

From the FAQ- You have ten free restores per year.
Personally I've never quite understood the counter on the license.

Q: How many restores do I have left?

A: You can visit the Restore Page and click on the
'e-mail' button to get a list of your registration codes.
This e-mail also tells how many restores are available.

Q: Doesn't this use a restore?

A:  A restore is used only when you enter your registration code on the restore page. Entering your email address does not use a restore. Using your install key does not use a restore.

And actually, the one time I thought I was checking the number of restores left, I generated a new install key. Oops! One restore gone...

If they didn't have the counter, someone could publish their registration code on the internet. Everyone could generate licenses and it would destroy the point of their anti-piracy measures

kaiynne,

Only one license file is needed if you are registering your MCs at the same time. Have you already used your ten yearly restores? If you have a good explanation for that, maybe you could pm somebody at JRiver. Search here in the Forum.

Since you are such a heavy user you could also consider buying another license. You would have 20 nice yearly restores.  ;)

In my opinion ten/year is quite generous and that should be usually enough.

Perhaps Microsoft is not so generous. Recently my XP demanded a reactivation. I had upgraded my boot hard drive once. Then I had some network problems and I disabled the integrated nic in XP's Local Area Connection Status for a moment. After I rebooted and enabled the same integrated nic again a reactivation was needed.

Here is one recent discussion about the topic:

I have only restored 4 times, I think the problem came when I was using firefox and trying to restore when i intially purchased MC.  I must have used 5 or 6 immediately by trying over and over to get it to work.  Then when I used IE it worked first time.

I will try again to restore in one sec.  I am sure there is some way to look at my restore history and see that 6 or so were done within an hour of my purchase.

In my opinion, and I know others feel differently, it is a Firefox problem and they should conform to the IE standard.

Standards evolve and the process isn't always logical, but on the Windows platform, IE is the standard.  Like it or not.

Jim,

I think that though IE may have the largest market share at the moment, it is slowly losing it, as many people realise that it is horribly insecure and frankly lagging behind other competing browsers.  It is slower, less user friendly, less adaptable less everything essentially in my opinion.  The only thing it has going for it is that it is integrated into the windows shell.

There is a big flaw in your argument, which is that because most people use IE it should be used as the de facto standard.  Yet we allready have open standards, which is the reason why standards groups exist, they are there to make sure that there is an open standard that all browsers can conform to so that web designers can make one page and feel confidant that there will be a fairly similiar experience regardless of the browser one happens to be using.

The problem with IE is that the development team through arrogance or just ineptitude does not feel as though IE should have to implement these standards as they are set out.

Do you honestly suggest that the firefox development team should have to reverse engineer IE in order to work out how they have missimplemented an open standard, so that they can comply with the "IE Standard"?  The standard is there for people to comply with.  Browser developers have access to it so that they can implement it as accurately as possible and web developers have access to it so that the can design standards compliant sites.  Surely no one should have to go through microsoft in order to develop a competing browser or a webpage for that matter.

By the way thanks for taking care of the reg issue it worked perfectly.

It was down to 94% in a report I saw a couple weeks ago.

Standards group _propose_ standards.  The market  _makes_ them.

I don't disagree.  It's too bad.  Get over it.  IE is the standard now.  I wish Netscape or another company were, but it won't happen.

Yes.

Jim I was being sarcastic, it would be illegal under the DMCA for the FF development team to reverse engineer IE in order to see how it implements open standards.  Not to mention the fact that it would be a ridiculous burden for anyone attempting to design a browser to have to go through.
