Media Server not working
« on: July 10, 2004, 08:18:31 am »

???I had a hard drive crash a couple of weeks ago when my Media Center was working just fine with my Tivo. I have since re-installed everything, and the Tivo server works fine. However, the Media Center server is not showing up on my TV screen though the Tivo options are fine.

I checked the MC Server, and it looks as though it is working. The messages on the screen are:
07/10/04 09:17:17 - sharer ready to accept connections
07/10/04 09:17:17 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
07/10/04 09:17:17 - TiVo HTTP ready for connections

I believe that these are correct, however when I check my TV, there is not listing for the Media Center. Any help would be appreciated.

Post your system info please.

What setting are you using for TiVo? It should be port 8079.

Did you enter your IP address on the TiVo?

Do a "netstat -an" in a dos window, and  look for 8079 and 2190 listeners.

Try stopping and restarting Media Server without doing anything else (I'm wondering if the beacon died).

I ran that, and both the 8079 and the other one are showing as "listening". The TIVO interface is working fine, but the Media Center does not show up in the listings.

sounds like a firewall issue then. Can you describe your network setup?

The TiVo software operates over port 8080, and Media Server uses 8079, so make sure both are open in any firewalls you are using. (XP has a built in firewall).

I have a Linksysm Wireless G 2.4 Gigahertz router. I am not running any other firewall software.

If you've got another PC handy, or a friend with a laptop/wireless, stick that PC in the same place as the TiVo and try from a DOS window:

telnet <ip-address> 8079

See if you get an error message.

Double check you have disabled XP and the Linksys's firewall.

Something is blocking the traffic.

I am beginning to think that you are probably right about the firewall being the issue, but why would the TIVO server work and the Media Center server not work?

Because (if I'm remembering right) the TiVo uses port 8080 and we use 8079. 8080 is a common port (proxy servers I believe) to leave open, but 8079 isn't.

I can't explain it because I have not changed anything, but Media Server is now working with my TIVO!
