Media Center 11.0.53 Alpha Available
« on: August 09, 2004, 05:13:45 pm »

We're just starting work on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your settings.  Some plugins still do not work.

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110053.exe

11.0.53 (8/9/04)

1. Fixed: When burning an audio CD with direct decoding enabled, some mp3 source files could cause incorrect track boundaries on the resultant CD.
2. Fixed: Playing Now display could be lost when refreshing the view, causing playback of files to fail.
3. Fixed: In some cases the Action Window would not update when changing pages.
4. Fixed: Album tooltips could show <too many files to list> for all albums.
5. Fixed: In split-pane mode, the status bar would only work for the bottom pane.
6. Fixed: AAC file importing will include 'Album' information correctly.
7. NEW: Several image editor improvements and fixes.
8. NEW: Media Server notifies when already running.
9. Fixed: When synching to Portables, 'Delete unselected files' not always being recognized correctly.
10. Fixed: MC could display a "failed to register mcmimeman" message on startup.
11. Changed: Portable devices will be accessed via WMDM (except for iPod) by default. For devices which support DRM protection and for which we have a plugin, the plugin will automatically install and run in place of WMDM.
12. NEW: Split-pane will automatically open showing track listing when burning a CD.

11.0.52 (8/6/04)

1. Fixed: Names like "E5150" could get interpreted as scientific notation and stored incorrectly in the database.
2. Fixed: Webpage type views could show extra borders in some cases.
3. Fixed: MC could display an error message when going into options.
4. NEW: 'All' item shows in Tree and Theater View like it shows in the panes. (allows a level to be bypassed)
5. Fixed: In some cases, pane content caching could cause the panes to work improperly.
6. Changed: Several optimizations to new window layout engine.

 Couple of quick requests:

    * Since a new backup is created on each import, can we set the number of MAX Backups to retain?
    * [Date (Month #)] Field -- Please ?
    *  Using [Dimensions] (Calculated Field) in a thumbnail view shows "CIRCULAR: Dimensions" instead.
    * Media Server -- Allow us to select which fields are included, if I elimiinate Lyrics/Bios I can reduce the downlaod size by about 80% !!!
    * Full EXIF Parsing Support -- To allow custom field creation from these tags, as well.
    * On Duplicate checking, allow a "Selection~" tag so that I can select the Low Bitrate, or Smallest Filesize, or Oldest File, etc
    * A new version of the SlideShow plugin that works with V11 would be sweet !
    * Auto-Import Functionality (Use Media Scheduler to import basedon the new intelligent import wizard)
    * While I'm at it ... Why not throw my Pie-in-the-Sky request -- CD+G Support Plugin!

Can someone please answer the following:
What do the following fields mean?
Playback Range
Mix Album

Playback Range
Allows MC to play a range of a file. (like 0:30 - 1:30)  Used mostly for internal things right now.

Mix Album
Whether the song is on an album with multiple artists. (a "mix" cd)

Text
Simple text of documents files -- useful for quick searching.

I re-installed 11.0.52 over 11.0.52 and the split pane problem disapeared...

But I'm still getting "Media Center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files. Error unknown. Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location".

It seems to be unpredictable. Sometimes I can play only one song and when I click another song, I get the error. Sometimes I can play a few songs before the problem appears.

And the situation is the same whether I select a song via MC's library or via Windows Explorer....

UPDATE:

- After re-booting, the problem is the same.
- Seems lke MC can only play the 1st song selected. When it tries to play the next song in Playing Now, it throws the error at me. Same situation if I try to change songs while the first track selected is playing.

M.

Thanks Matt! Problem is now gone and I'm back to enjoying tunes! Gracias!

It'd be good to get a [year/month] field.  (Is there a way to do this currently?)

suggestion:

how about adding the option of incorporating the results of my secure rip into the tag info (just the final % figure would suffice).  As it stands i have a bunch of saved logs and no easy way to match this to the file itself.

- If I do ctrl+f for doing a normal search, the split panes come up and the search
is in both the upper and lower split pane.

Shouldn't OR there be one pane (like the old days), or the search only search in the lower pane ?

- How do I turn of the split panes without restarting MC ?

- Or maybe put a search box for each split pane

- And what about giving the split panes a title, like "Playing Now", "Media Library", "Playlist ...", "Custom" , ...

- Can't we customise the size of the panes ? (I would like to have my upper pane smaller than my lower pane)

- Maybe if we switch to split panes, the track info display would auto-dissapear ?

Installed MC10+MC11 side by side. Seems to work fairly OK.

Bug:
MC10 installation path is in my case P:\Programme\J River.
MC11 does not honour current installation path nor asks for an installation path, but automatically installs on C:\Programme\ J River.

I think it should select the same base folder as MC10.

Just installed this version on a freshly installed WinXP (SP1) machine, and started import of library from scratch.

It seems REALLY slow doing the import, and MC is chewing aroun 90% of CPU while importing...

Also, the Cancel button on the import dialog is greyed out, and if I click on the title bar of the import dialog
window, the window jumps away from my pointer (it seems like some sorta early April Fools trick...)

BTW, I have installed DirectX 9.0c...

It ended up taking 36:19 to import 15842 tracks (mostly MP3, mostly VBR high quality)

Also, When I start Media Server, it prompts me to download/install the LAME MP3 Encoder.

Instead of the split panes I'd like to see the Playing Now in a floating window.  Kind of like the Action Window used to so in MC 9.

That way you could 'work' in the main view and toggle over to the playing now window, with visualisations, when you wanted see/adjust playing now.  This would also be really cool in a dual monitor set up.

1.a. Crashed on importing 20,000+ files (video and music):

Produced a dialog with a red X titled Media Jukebox.exe - Application Error that said "The instruction at '0x77f596b5' referenced memory at '0x00000318'. The memory could not be 'read'. Click OK to terminate the program."

This occurred after doing a clean install side by side with MC10. Right before this I successfully imported 2,500+ files (photos).

b. Trying this again produced a "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library dialog saying there was a runtime error in Media Jukebox.exe (BUT THE ONE LOCATED IN THE DIRECTORY WHERE MC10 IS INSTALLED!)

2. A number of video files in a certain directory (trailers) don't seem to import. MC finds them all in the count it produces after the import, but about half are missing from the library.

**Any way for you guys to be able to let us specify different Import locations for each library

Hello,

With this beta, it seems MC has difficulty keeping its focus in XP w/SP2. It seems it does not always go in the taskbar. MC is loaded and running but hidden... I need to open and close different open apps from the taskbar to find it.

Anybody else noticed this.

Thanks.

this somtimes happens in windows, try the following

1. make sure you have windows set up to control virtual Memory, do not limit the size

2. reboot

3. Increase memory to at least 512 Megs

Yes, as long as you use the month NAME .. There is currently no way to use the month NUMBER .
Calculated field:  [Date (year)]/[Date (month)]

I must agree with LunchmeatVoom, MC seems very slow to import (new Win2K install, defragged drives).  Also seeing slow renaming of files and updating of tags.

(Actually it seems to go in spurts of clusters . . . .
v-e-r-y_s-l-o-w on several, then real fast on a bunch, then
s-l-o-w again for a bunch more etc) Either way, it still uses 97% of my CPU.

(Ran the same functions in MC10 and it was very much faster)

Has something changed?

Strange behavior:, after an import/update there were a number of 'Incomplete Albums' showing.
Upon manually searching the Artist\Album folders I discovered the tracks were in the folder but had NOT been imported.
To make things even stranger, these albums had been previously imported and had been complete.  There were NO incomplete albums in my libriary prior to this particular import.
Just a fluke perhaps?

Feature request: Back-Up of Favorites, Toolbar customization, perhaps even View Schemes (yes, I know the View Schemes are backed-up in the library backups).  Many of us spend hours making custom toolbars, fav's, playlists, smartlists, and view schemes . . . only to have lost them on more than one occurance.

I have noticed on odd occassions with various builds of MC 11 the "incomplete album" problem commented on above by AoXoMoXoA.

It seems that MC11 skips over some tracks, or that some tracks tags don't make it into the database.

If I remember correctly, doing subsequent imports seemed to pick up the "missing" tracks.

Matt, does this possibly mean that MC11 could have an A-B loop in the near future???  :D

BTW: With this build I am able to reproduce a crash:

- Gforce (free version) running in the playing now pane
- New Tile list style in the lower pane
- I right click on an entry in the tile list (playing or not playing) and select Locate/Album
- Media Center crashes

Cheers, keep up the good work.

Working with files on remote drive shares is terribly slow .... Is anyone else seeing this ?
I'm seeing about a 300KB/s file transfer ... I can get MUCH higher just moving files to/from the drives ..

I'm trying to use the MD5 master .. and to do some tagging & file renaming .. all operations seems to be horribly slow on remote drives ... local drives it SCREAMS !

1. Fixed: When burning an audio CD with direct decoding enabled, some mp3 source files could cause incorrect track boundaries on the resultant CD.

I've burned three different CDs originally ripped at 192kbps CBR, and noticed tonight that all of them get progressively a few seconds later in their track boundaries.

request: while cd ripping is done in the action window the file converter is open in it's own window. Would it be possible to integrade the file converter to the action window too? At least while converting so one won't have a window floating around.

Futhermore: is the pitch plugin supposed to work with v11? It doesn't work for me (using build 53)

Yep, got the same problem - but I'm using the latest MC 10 - it's been doing this intermittently for months and months.

I feel that MC's burning engine needs some serious attention. :(

It is far too easy to miss that it is checked and lose artist names for songs on a "multipe artist" album, whereas if it was off by default and you missed it you lose nothing and can easily turn it on and rename the files as opposed to having to look up the performer for each track and retag.

(I use "Multiple Artist" in the Album Artist field and use the performer's name for the Artist field on each track . . . so your chosen default causes me a good deal of extra work should I miss it on a clean install [as I have done now more than once :(  )

Also, when MC11 crashes and the message states that it is saving an error log . . . .   where does it save this file?

I took the plunge today... so far so good.

I get an error upon launch of "Failed to create cd writer control (cdwriter.ocx)" or something similar to that.  Dont quote me exactly.

What encoder do you use?

While I use Mediacenter normally, these particular CDs are are mixtures of Xing, Lame 3.90/3.92/3.93, and FhG (fastenc or mp3enc).  However I checked closer on one of the CDs:

Tracks 1-10 are Lame 3.93 Stereo
Track 11 is Lame 3.90 Stereo
Track 12 is FhG Joint Stereo
Track 13 is Xing Stereo

By the second track it's already obvious that the track boundary is about a second into the song, and this continues through the CD until the last song is about four seconds off.  So since the first number are all Lame 3.93, that's probably the answer you're looking for.

Can you try this with tracks ripped with MC's MP3 encoder?  Just as a test?

MC is still 'dropping files' and tags on Import and on 'Rename Files from Properties'.

I used the tree in MC to go to my Ripped folder, did some tag & rename as well as Import.  MC left most files in the ripped folder, and the icons changed back from blue to yellow.
I repeated the operation and a few more left the ripped folder but not all. Finally got the rest to respond & cooperate.

When I went into my library, several of these new tracks were missing!   ?

I used MC's Import function to scan my library dives but did not pick up the files.
Re-ripped the missing tracks, tagged, imported, renamed . . . .

Next I find I now have DUPLICATES of this track.   ?

Tag changes do not always 'sticfk' either until repeated.

This has occurred with a variety of file types including: mp3, ogg, mpc, shn.

Question: MC does not report the duration or bitrate on shn files??

ALSO: Playing APE files, MC refuses to advance to the next track . . . .it merely sits there idle.

Two small feature requests:

When using search, it would be nice if apostrophe, commas etc was ignored. Fx when searing for name=dont worry be happy I would like to see Don't worry, be happy.

Second:
It would be awesome if one was able to assign icons to viewschremes. Fx, I've just setup an iPod view (thanks to some guide) and it would be nice to have a small iPod as the icon. Second I have another for local music, so it would be great to use a danish flag for it.

Matt,
Dumb question
I downloaded 11.053 and am running 10.161
The install went fine, it ask if I wanted it to use the same library as 10.161 and I said yes.  But when I updated 10.161 (adding new music) MC11 did not pick it up.  Where is the library for 11?
I open 11 and all is well, but the new music is not there.  Do I need to uninstall 11 and reinstall NOT sharing the library then import all the music and video?

11 and 10 use different library structures.  11's is stored in your profile folder (e.g. "C:\Documents and Settings\<profilename>\Application Data\J River\Media Center 11\Library".  When you installed 11, it basically made a copy of the 10 library and upgraded it, so they will never be in synch unless you import music using both versions.

Thanks, it also appears to be much smaller database for 11 than 10 even though 11 has lots of smaller files.
Has anyone put together info on the new features of 11?
Thanks for all the hard work.  It looks great.  I just need to know what to look for in 11 that is different.

I just installed the audioscrobbler plug-in.  The site itself is down and I don't have a user ID yet...  MC11 crashes half-way through each song.  From the other thread, that's when audioscrobbler transmits info.  Turning off the plug-in fixes the problem.

I think others were able to use audioscobbler with MC11.

I've just installed MC11 on my PC for the first time and have noticed that there is no support for external encoders. I have always used a specific version of LAME as an external encoder inprevious versions of MC. Please can we have this support back.

Replace the lame.exe in MC\Plugins with any version you like.  You'll get on-the-fly encoding that way for better performance.
