moving licenses
« on: August 10, 2004, 11:35:51 am »

Hi,

I just got a new laptop (AMD64). I'd like to start using MC11 from scratch. I have two copies of MC10, one on my desktop and one on my old laptop. I'd like to remove MC10 from my old laptop, and install that extra license in my new one. Is that possible? how do I do it? Is the MC10 license valid until MC11 moves to beta at least?

Thanks

Just use a restore on the new computer.

There are more details in the purchase FAQ.

Do you mean this?:

I can't see any details about MC10 -> MC11 there. Can you post a link?
Thanks

MC11 currently works with an MC10 license.  You might have to install MC10 first and restore, then upgrade to MC11.  I'm not sure.

Ok, I upgraded from jukebox to MC10... Now I have two license files: one for MJ and another for MC10. If I tell MC11 to reuse any of those files, it says that my license has expired.

The only other option I have is to "restore from internet". If I do that, I get a code associated to my emai, and when I plug it in the MC site, it gives me a link to download... MJ!

This is not right :D

Someone here should now how to do this :D

Cheers

Make sure you have a recent version of MC11.  They have a hard timeout.

Can you install MC10 and get it licensed?  If so, you should be able to update to MC11.

I don't think thats what he said to do

he said License your MC10 then install MC11

MC11 should then work as if it is licensed untill it times out

i think the current version will time out 1 sep 2004

No, if I use my MC10 license file, it says that it has expired.
I don't remember which way one has to apply the licenses. I guess when the MC10 license is an upgrade from MJ8, then the MJ88 has to be applied first.

Well, to answer your question: no I cannot get MC10 licensed.

The install key (your license file) is only good for two weeks. You probably have an old one. Did you get a new one from the restore page?

Ok, I got a  new license from the restore page. It sent me a MJ8 lincense. If I try to update MC10 with that incense, it says that it's for MJ8, not for MC10.

So how do I get the license for MC10? This is costing me way too much time. The process should be simpler.

You have a colorado.edu for your MJ8 license and an operamail.com for your MC10 license.  If you know your password, you can change it.

Otherwise, send me an e-mail ( jimh @ jriver.com ) and I'll change it.

You could make the process simpler by keeping a paper file of licenses.  Just print the e-mail when you get it and put it in the file.

On the other hand, some people find the self inflicted pain more satisfying.

JimH,

Forgot the operamail address. Spam (and immoral companies selling their databases) made me give you a junk mail address the second time.

BTW, it's not me aone who thinks that the licensing paraphernalia is nonsensincal. I understand that you have to protect your product from piracy, but you are also bugging your customer base (and this is not the first time). There must be a better way of dealing with this. I'm a supporter of open software (as you may already know), but I don't dislike you or, obviously, your product. This is just a suggestion: maybe you can think something smarter than the key + file thing.

Cheers

I agree with urlwolf's last post.

In addition I don't get the reasoning behind the limited restores. No other program I have ever used has had 'limited' restores.

You're punishing your own customers for having problems with their machines that are, I'm pretty sure, for the most part, not intentional, or caused by other factors beyond their control.

thats simple

Because the key would be on a crack site and then would be free for anyone.

with a limit on the restores on a key than any key that would be on a crack site would be basicly useless and not worth the time posting, and for anyone doing so they would lose future restores.

I do not think this is up for debate and surely not in the open forum, but if you have a better way to keep a license key secure then send them secure mail.
