Which one is the best way to browse images?

I like the way XP does: You have a litle preview in the bottom of Explorer, and you have a big enoght view of the selected image...

I cant easly do that using MC, because panes and thumbnails fills almost all the window... I am not sure which one is the best solution, but I think it is an important issue that deserves a popular brainstorming...

Here are my 2 cents...

Right now, you can do something similar setting Action Window at "File properties/Image"... However,  the image is not the big it could be, because the tree uses a valuable space...

My proposal is to hide the tree some way, and here are some possible ways...

a) To add a parent node ("MC tree", or whatever). It would alow me to fully collapse the tree, using a minimun space. Right now, exists 6 parent node (Start, PN, Images, Devices, Playlist, Plugins) that I rarely use. Actually, I dont use the tree at all...

b) To include the tree inside the Action Window. That way, the tree only would appear whenever I selected it, and it would collapse when another Action was active... (further more, it would free some space to expand 2 AW at the same time... PN and File Properties, for instance)

Further more, I think MC would look cleaner witouh the tree visible all time. Right now, it seems is flying on the window trying to find a place to be at. Inside the AC, it would be another element of MC perfectly located..

This is a great idea, wish that I had thought of it.

The custom thumbnail sizing doesn't allow for big enough sizes to really see some detail of your pics.

I would much rather have a version of the XP filmstrip view inside of MC than the the flying thumbnails view.

The xp filmstrip is great, it's simple and the pics are big enough to see detail.  But it is folder based, it would be nice to be able to do the same thing inside an MC view scheme with all of the different ways to group images that MC gives us.

Seems like the only options in MC to view big pictures is to make the action window huge, which is impractical, or start a slide show, which is not always convenient.

If i understand this right.

MC will have to allow an Images visualization similar to that shown in the film strip. Or an easier way to get a magnified view in the images window by clicking the thumbnails (thought it did this already)

The details section is already in the Action Window.

The thumbnails need to be more user configurable.

I guess that my thought was that a filmstrip type of view would be another view style.  List view, Thumbnails, the new Alt+3 thing in v 11, and 'filmstrip'.  I realize this should have a different name and that I may be getting terms wrong, I'm at work and don't have MC installed here.

In the MC version of filmstrip (as I envision it), the panes would still be across the top of the main window, though you would want them to be fairly narrow, just a couple of rows.

In the center of the Main window is a single picture, shown as large as the space allows.  In a thin single line along the bottom of the main window is a scrollable 'strip' of pics that match whatever criteria is selected in the panes.

I realize that I'm just making this up as I go along, and nobody asked me, but I wonder if J River has any thoughts on if this is a good idea or if I'm just smokin' my socks.....


A real stretch of this idea would be to integrate the new image editor into this view so that some basic editing, optimizing, cropping, red-eye adjustment etc. could be done to the single picture in the center of the window.  Maybe a toolbar running across the window, right under the panes......

I'm all for another view style to accomodate images.

However i think editing and touching up etc could best be handled by an app more specialised in this area. MC should make it easy to organise and see media. It should be able to pass images/media to dedicated apps transparently.

With the right click/send to menu, you can currently send an image to the editor of your choice.  

MC11 has a simple image editor for basic tasks like resizing, cropping, or red-eye reduction,

Hit_ny - Definitely check out the Send to command.  It's easy to add apps to and makes MC very slick to use with other tools.

You can currently double click to start the slideshow, then pause by hitting the space bar.  It isn't much different.

I've suggesting hitting enter to do the same and then escape or enter to return.  I think DocLotus said that's what ACDSee does.

but flicking back and forward is annoying, and having the playing now display over the top of the panes or thumnail list gets in the way of choosing the files. I like the filmstrip idea.
