Player pops at the end of each song
« on: October 25, 2002, 10:59:06 am »

MJ changes tracks while the previous track is still playing and it skips or pops. It happens 5 seconds before end of each song. If I set sound output to more skip resistant, the skip occurs 12 seconds before end of each song. It isn't resistant at all.
The pops occurs at the moment when MJ reads about 1MB from disk. When MJ changes track, it removes all plugins from main memory and reads them from harddisk again. MJ reads something from harddisk even if I play CD and it pops too.

I have tried to use gap between tracks, but the gap occurs at the moment when the track has already been changed so it doesn't help.

I would do 2 things:

1.) Set Playback>Output to DirectSound, bitdepth to 16 (or Source bitdepth), and the Settings Button slider all the way to More Responsive (if your machine is at least as fast as mine).

2.) In the Playback tab again, set Default>Between Tracks to Cross-fade (smooth), Seeking to Smooth (normal), and Stop to Fadeout (slow)

These are the settings I use on my 700 MHz PIII.

Xenno

PS: I trust your running latest MJ, have latest OS service packs, latest soundcard drivers, and plenty of Beck's Dark (w/ limes) while your checking all this out.

I have changed all playback settings, but nothing helped. I have AMD-K6-2 400 MHz. Please don't tell me that I need some faster processor...
Maybe I should buy more memory. If I close all other applications and if I play only short files, then there are no pops. That's because all plugins can remain in disk cache and they are not read from disk again when MJ changes tracks.
I don't have much money so I am not going to buy better computer now. It would be better to use another player. But I like some features of MJ that other players don't have. What do you recommend ?

Is it a Creative soundcard?  If so, the driver could be the problem.

>>Maybe I should buy more memory

Might help if it's doing a lot of disk paging.

Paste your sys info (MJ>Help>System Info) in a new post

There's not much available memory there. It could be paging to disk which W98 is not terribly good at (as compared to the NT series). Invest in some memory...it's cheap.

Xenno

PS: If u only have MJ running...what does your sys info look like then?

PS2: Since your running W98, then set your Playback back to WaveOut (DS is recommended on W2k & XP). Play with the settings slider.

And it pops still? If so then it's not a memory shortage problem. U have all the Win98 updates (including any DirectX updates) I assume. Try uninstalling/reinstalling MJ (backup license first to a safe place)....I know..you've heard that before (or been there.....done that). CPU should be fast enough. Out of any more ideas at the moment.

Xenno

edit> Myself....I don't care for onboard anything, especially audio/video (even had problems with an onboard NIC). If you can disable the audio (preferrably thru the BIOS, but it can be done thru Windows), then pick up a good PCI based audio card (you can always move it to a new comp).

I have installed DirectX 8.1.
I use DirectSound, because the sound quality is better. If I disable hardware acceleration, then DirectSound is as bad as WaveOut. Probably it depends on soundcard. I don't know what the hardware acceleration really does, but I can hear difference between DirectSound and WaveOut.

No it's not good. Only WaveOut doesn't pop, but I won't use it.
