PDA problems with 11.0.127
« on: November 15, 2004, 06:16:02 am »

If I insert my PDA in the cradle, then  I get three
'JRiver WMDM Progress' tasks in the task manager that never go away

The same here, with an iPAQ 2210 (aka 2215) and ActiveSync 3.71.  I've "seen" these hidden windows before when running MC11 but never found a reason why they appeared. After reading this thread I inserted my iPAQ. Then the download progress dialog of MC11 appeared several times and the "Device Connected" field appeared, blinking. In the task switcher I could now see 4 instances of this WMDM window.

If I then click on "Handheld Player" all root directories on my iPAQ (e.g. the SD card) are displayed in the list (there are 4 of them which is the same number as that of the hidden WMDM windows that had been opened initially). If I click on one of these directories once again the "Downloading..." dialog appears shortly before the drop target for the clicked handheld player entry appears. And again one more of these invisible WMDM windows has been opened (I had closed them before with Alt-F4).

Connecting my iPod will also cause MC11 to open such an invisible window, but only one.  I think this is intentional, but wouldn't it be possible to completely hide this device interface tool? It obviously has no user interface so it makes no sense to list it with the other running applications in the task manger and task switcher.

Any possibility of seeing a screenshot of the multiple progress tasks you are seeing?

Yes, but - is there a way to upload images to the forum or do I need to put them on a web server?

You'll need to put them on your server and then link to them here.

I think he needs to see a pic of your taskmanager showing the 3 processes running.

I think he needs to see a pic of your taskmanager showing the 3 processes running.

He mentioned "progress tasks". The taskmanager shows tasks named "JRiver WMDM Progress", but there's nothing special about the display in the taskmanager. I thought he'd refer to the download progress windows I mentioned.

So Steve, what do you want?  :)

Lets try to narrow this down. Start MC connect your device. Do you immediately see the 'Downloading...' dialogue posted by eso or what happens?

And for me it's 4 dialogs appearing successively. As I mentioned it seems to be for every root directory/"drive" on the PDA. For my iPAQ that's the device itself, a "Network" directory created by a network tool I use, the SD card, and the internal flash ROM drive named "iPAQ file store".

BTW,

I get the 3 items in the Task List also, although the Connecting box is so fast, I never noticed it happened 3 times. I have an iPaq 2215 with three drives. I have seen this for several versions of MC 11.

What name is reported in the MC tree for your devices?

if I have an activesync session active via wifi : nothing

via usb : Toshiba, Flash ROM Disk, SD Card

If I click on any of these another 'downloading...' dialog box appears and another task stays in the task manager (only once)

Everyone,

I think I have this fixed (assuming the only problem was the multiple task bar items). It will be in the next MC build.

Thanks,

In 11.0.129, I still get 3 more 'j. river wmdm progress' items added to the task manager
each time I insert the PDA in the cradle...

*I don't see the actual 'loading...' dialog boxes anymore
*I don't see any PDA related items In drives and devices anymore
* if I insert the PDA, then  the action window
changes to  'device connected' with two items (handheld player and camera) I don't have either one connected and If you click on then , MC tells you that they are not available (which is true)

If a picture of the task manager is possible with the three items, that would be helpful.

Thanks,

When MC opens the 'device connected' Action Window, it is in repsonse to your PDA being recognized as a WMDM compatible device. MC is asking you  how you want this device to be recognized, as a camera or a handheld player.  You do not want it recognized as either, correct?

I'll get back to you next week (if somebody else doesn't reply)

Here is the task manager image:

And here my task switcher showing the unncessary WMDM windows:

Good question. I think in general it should be possible to choose at any time which devices (or device elements) are shown. But what I find most annoying are these "half-invisible" windows that show up in my task list. This has nothing to do with the PDA, it's the same for other mobile devices like my iPod.  The connection to the mobile device is an implementation specific detail that shouldn't be visible (IMHO).

It seems that in build 146 the problem has been fixed. When I inserted my iPAQ MC asked me if I want to use it as a media player. It did so for each "drive" in my iPAQ and also for a "Nero Fast CD-Burining Plug-in" (I have Nero 6.6 installed). BTW, the Nero Plug-in was listed as a device in previous versions of MC too.

After I answered "No" to all questions MC asked the same question once again for all the mentioned devices. But after that it now seems to remember that decision. I re-inserted my PDA and no more questions came up.

it's not fixed for me

If I insert the pda, then I see

the desired handheld is not valid

then it asks me for all the "drives" in my toshiba e800 and "Nero Fast CD-Burining Plug-in" if I want to recognize this device as a music player

I selected no for each (I was asked this several times for each drive)

now if I insert my pda when MC 11.0.149 is running
I see 3 times 'the desired handheld is not valid'

Marcel,

Please get 162 when it is available and go to Tools->Options->Handheld and select 'Reset selected devices' and then retry connecting your devices. The problem you reported should go away after you choose to ignore the device.
