CD Baby -- First MC Service
« on: June 09, 2004, 08:23:26 am »

Who are CD Baby?

"Just a few people in a cool Portland, Oregon, CD warehouse", who are apparently "the largest seller of independent CDs on the web", and it seems you are able to buy from them direct through MC, if what I see under Tools/Service Manager is correct?

Of course I knew about the Big Thing, but I hadn't seen this until I installed 145 today. No mention on the board that I can find. Am I missing something?

It's a Pretty Big Deal, but not the Big Deal(s).

We'll announce more before we move this version to the downloads page, but we're starting to add services to MC now.  CD Baby sells CD's on-line, but they focus on independent artists.  I found them when I was looking for a CD of a local artist I like, and I think they have a really simple and fair business model.  So we asked them if they'd like to work together and they said, "Huh?  Oh sure."

If you don't see it in MC, make sure you have build 145 or higher.  Then go to Service Manager under Tools and install it by choosing "Show".  You can use the same window to "Hide" it (remove it from MC).

Yeah, its clear from their website that they arent the BD. Its good to see they ship worldwide, though. It'll be interesting to see how services integrate with MC once we can actually install them.

I have to say I do like the way this is being done... The user can choose to install the service...

I am guessing that when you install the service, you can also uninstall the service... Right?

Using the Service Manager, you can Install or Hide any service.  There's only one there right now though.

This band:
http://www.cafeaccordion.com/

On the CD Baby site, you can search for artists from a certain area.

On most pages at CD Baby, there is a line that says something like: Other artists from Minnesota which then links to a page like this:

Ok,  CD Baby shows up in my service manager.

Is it supposed to do something?  I can click on the CD baby icon, but nothing happens.  Is this right?

CD Baby recomendation: Look for a band called Menomena.  They are a fantastic indie rock band.  Highly recommended.

Below the text line that says: "CD Baby: a little CD store with the best new independent music",  you should see a "Show" button.  Click it.

Hi folks,

Just tried CD Baby Service and it's great !
They have quite a good selection of talented artists and it's fun to browse thru the catalogue with MC. Found a band called 'Pancho's Lament' which is great ! gonna order the CD.

BTW here is a tip when using CD-Baby within MC :

You can easily queue track lists from different albums in the playing now playlist.
- in the Action Window select Build Playlist / Edit Playing Now
- When you are on an album page in CD-Baby just drag'n Drop the "Play all songs" button (purple for DSL) onto the playing now action window.

:)

Ciao all

Christian

Hi

I tried also 'CD baby' and I must agree they have a lot of great music.
But I have some problems with the song tags.
If I use "Download with Download Manager" within MS Explorer, I get the song tags like artist, album, track #, track name and year correct.

But if I use Cmagic's tip with the drag'n drop within MC10, I only get a title with the name 'song' for all titles I download.

What am I doing wrong there?

Thanks for the help.

Greetings from Switzerland!

Hey, this is cool ! I like indie music. Do they carry other-than-american music?

So, you I guess you have a reason to fix the tag handling when streaming music now, eh :)

edit:
Does anyone know any good coountry-rock. I like the danish band Larsen & Furious Jane very much, which is kindda country-rockish.

So, let me see if I've got this correct ...

I can add the .m3u playlists from CDBaby to my media library.
OR
I can use the download manager and download the actual MP3s that they are allowing us to preview.

They do not supply the full length audio files for preview (varying lengths) ..
And
They do not provide any ID3 Tags in their files.

Am I missing anything ?
Sweet service, but I'm having a hard time trying to determine what it is I like .. as the only way to do such is to parse the MP3 filenames ... AFTER the fact ...

EDIT:  Ok, I get the tags if I IMPORT through DOWNLOAD MANAGER ... but somethiimes I jsut wnat to play the remote .msu files a... but there are no tag for that ..

Also , if they are going to integrate with MC .. can they do the Audio Analysis on their end so that don't have to level the files on our end :)   Wishful !

Now, what would be sweet is a LIBRARY we can download that has ALL of their selections rather than using the website ... with links via .m3u files so that we can test out all the songs without having to go through the slower web interface :)

Hi

But if I use Cmagic's tip with the drag'n drop within MC10, I only get a title with the name 'song' for all titles I download.

What am I doing wrong there?
Not doing anything wrong. It's the same here, no artist and track info displayed.
Note on streaming audio : When you add the clips in your" playing now" you just add an entry to the song clip URL (internet address). AT this point, you can't have much information to display. Normally,  the song name and artist appears when the streaming starts IF this information has been sent in  the stream header. It appears that CD-Baby does not put such data in its mp3 clips.

Well, that's my understanding !

have a nice day,

Christian

I can't install the service. When I attempt to (by clicking the "install service" button), I get the following message: "Invalid package file. Cannot continue. File: C:\Document and Settings\Jeff\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.ID5\HGXD7PXV\CDBaby[1].mjp

Does anyone know why this is happening, and how to fix it? Its happened with other plugins as well...

If mjp files sometime don't work, I don't know the answer.  You can try finding the file in Explorer and executing it.

Try deleting temp files also.  IE/Tools/Internet Options/Temporary Internet Files/Delete files.  This is an IE bug.

I'm sure it is. I'll just uninstall IE and re-install it and see if that helps. Oh, wait, I CAN'T uninstall IE for some silly reason. Why, I should sue that @#$% Bill Gates... ;)

I generally clean out my temp files from time to time, as I know how they can muck up windows operations at times. It didn't help. I've found if I double-click .mjp files they'll install. They just won't do it from a browser window. Now if someone would just explain to me again why having a browser integrated into the OS is a GOOD thing... ?

I realize this probably has nothing to do with MC. I guess I was just hoping there might be some "magic bullet" which might rectify the problem...

Is your system up to date?  Try IE/Tools/Windows Update to check.

IE security is also a possibility.  Firewall security maybe.  Something is preventing IE from executing the filetype.

I may split this off into a new thread, so if you don't find it, look on the index page.

I dont have time to try it within MC yet, but i am a HUGE cdBaby fan... HUGE!!!

Will post some favorite bands soon.

Try their various search engines .. search by mood, or "sounds like" search.

V. V. Cool !!

Are the songs just MP3s at the moment?  I'd love if you could buy a CD from them and get the MP3s for some nominal additional fee.

And/or the reverse.  After buying a full album online, if for some reasonable charge, you could get the actual CD.

I actually thought that Amazon.com was the "largest" seller of independent music, and that CD Baby was second.  But that might have been a little while ago.  I have a friend who has her CD there, and had been extremely happy with the service.

is there any easy way to get Cover Art from the CDbaby site into MC?   The "get from internet" obviously will not do it.

Is there just some easy way to cut and paste from the Cd baby site, whether from within MC or not, into MC?
