Girder / Media Center Help Request
« on: November 18, 2004, 02:53:26 am »

I'm trying to get Girder to control Media Center but have failed until now to get Girder to send cursor and CR (Enter) keys.  Unfortunatley I cannot use the Media Center remote plugin as Girder needs to run to control other equipment and they will not play together.

Does anyone have a working Media Center 10 GML file?

Alternatively any assistance in resolving the problem much appreciated!

I have no idea what kind of problem you're having, but the Girder plug-in hasn't been used for several versions (I think 8 was the last one). You'll find a working GML in the Data\Extas\Girder directory under the MC install directory.

Mastiff:  Many thanks for your help.  I located the Girder GML file but am still unable to navigate through the panes.  My objective is to be able to select an album remotely.

Keyboard short cuts for doing this would be TAB and CURSOR keys but the GML file does not appear to have this functionality.  I can perfom a Jump to Media Library but cannot scroll through and make a selection.

Hopefully I'm just missing a fundemental issue as the Girder file would be of little use to most people as I'm sure they will want to perform more than a start / stop exercise :(

Ah. Sorry. I didn't think anybody did anything that way. In that case I have two suggestions:

1. Use theater view and up/down/left/right/enter keys on the remote.

2. Get "Bitmaster's Tools" (in the Girder forum somewhere) and use the remote as a mouse.

This would be catch 22 as I have no means of sending cursor up/down/left/right or enter commands in Theatre view or any other view.

As I mentioned earlier, I'm sure that I'm missing something fundemental otherwise why would anyone go to the trouble of writing a Girder GML file that was IMHO not very useful.  I appreciate that a lot of people are using the server capability within MC but there's goto be a lot of users that like me simply want to control music selection with their Pronto remote.

Boy this is turning out to be a very frustrating experience, a bit like getting into the tin foil wrapper of a cheese slice  ;D

Two other ways to attack the problem are:

1.  Try MC11.  Navigation in Theaterview is improved.

2.  Try the Girder forum.  www.promixis.com .

Thanks Jim

I think the Girder forum is the next point of call.  All that is really required is the sendmessage codes for the four cursor keys and the enter key.

I should have asked this before, but is there any reason for not to use Girder's built in key functions (you can find them under Keyboard tab) and simply set MC as the target?

Good idea but it was the first thing I tried, it does not work for some reason.  I also tried it as an alternative procedure.  I have left a help message on the Girder forum and am keeping my fingers crossed.

Thanks again for your kind assistance.

If something Girder does isn't working, you may have another program doing things it shouldn't in the background.  Take a careful look at what else is running in the task manager.

Thanks Jim,

I tried it on two machines and one of them only had MC and Girder installed but alas the same result  :(

Have you tried targeting no window? Send to foreground?
