Songs transfer to iPod w/long dead spaces

Can any one help me.  A few songs in my library transfer from MC to my iPod and have very long dead spaces at the end of them - kind of like long pauses.  The files when played on my desktop using MC are normal length, but when they transfer to the iPod, a 4 min song will be 18 min - - 4 for the song and 14 minute length dead space (for example).  I've tried deleting the file off the iPod and retransfering but it is the same result.
