UPnP Server 1.0.7 for Media Receivers
« on: January 24, 2005, 12:55:13 pm »

MC's UPnP Server is available here:
http://www.jriver.com/~gateley/server_upnp.mjp

Changes and fixes
1.  This version adds view schemes
2.  For servers that have multiple network connections, you can now specify the IP address to listen on.

j

--------------------------------------------------------

Instructions for using the UPnP Server
Click on Plug-ins in MC's tree, then on UPnP Server.  On the right side of the UPnP Server page, set "Options" and then click on "Start" to start the server.

If a media receiver is already on the network, and the server is started, the receiver should pick up the server right away. However, I've not seen this working yet. I'd appreciate confirmation of this, or knowing it doesn't work.

MC UPnP Server Options
You can convert files to MP3 as they are streamed.

Checkboxes for available for two special cases:

1.  The NETGEAR Genre Hack is required for the NETGEAR MP101, and possibly others. It replaces blank genres with "Unknown" genres. The MP101 will otherwise refuse to play tracks with blank genres.

2.  The SMC/Terratex URL Hack is required for the SMC EZ Stream and the Terratec Noxon. These receivers cannot handle complex URLs (internal to the protocol) and this hack changes the URLs to simpler ones.

A log is generated on the UPnP Server page in MC.  If you have a UPnP device that doesn't work, you can copy the log from MC's UPnP Server (under the tree/plug-ins) and paste it into a thread here.

A list of UPnP devices (supported and unsupported):
http://www.jriver.com/~gateley/dmr.html

A thread that explains more about UPnP and how MC supports it:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=25689.0

The previous thread on the UPnP Server:

VIEW SCHEMES, YEAH!!

Thanks a lot, I'll test right this night.

You'll have to right click on the view scheme you want, choose edit, and check the box that tells MC to display it in Theater View.

I'm trying to use my Linksys WMLS11B with this new UPnP Server and am having no luck. I'm running MC 11.0.179 and have successfully gotten the Linksys to connect to MusicMatch Jukebox's UPnP server. I could not, however, get it to connect to Windows Media Connect. The Linksys is using the latest 1.09 firmware. It sees the MC UPnP server, but gets stuck when trying to browse it.

Here's a snippet of what's happening in my UPnP log:

Unfortunately, still no software client works with MC's UPNP, so i can't test the view schemes. I really want to buy a Noxon, but only if the view shemes work there.

Can someone post a screenshot of a Noxon (or at least any other device) showing a custom view of MC on the display?!?

Then I'll go and get a hardware client... :)

Thanks Raist

P.S. Or does someone know a software client working with MC??
P.P.S. You can also mail me the screenshot at tdc.net@gmx.at if you prefer...

Really impressive screenshots, thanks a lot.

Is this implementation of customized views 100% UPNP conform, so that it will work on any of the devices listed as compatible with MC by John??

Someone here with a Noxon can confirm this functionality.

Thanks
Raist

P.S. I'm sorry, I may be a little bit paranoid, I just don't want to spend some money on a UPNP device without custom views, because my music collection is too big for browsing without customized views (~ 6000 CDs)

This should be working with any UPnP device that MC currently supports.  We don't have a Noxon to test.

Click on plugins in the tree, click on the server plugin, and then options on the right hand side of the screen.

I just found a software UPnP renderer:

It should work fine with MC11.

Thanks for the hint about Power Cinema, I try if it works. EDIT: It was not released YET  :'(

Another question: Where are the files stored that are transmitted to a UPNP Client? Because for the old Media Server, I installed MC on a saveable RAM-Disk on my server so that the HD didn't have to start up for only browsing the library, but only for playing files. I want to do so again for the UPNP Server, so please tell me which folder (and files) I have to put on that RAM-Disk.

Thanks a lot
Raist

P.S. Got a new account, my machine crashed and forgot my password. Email sent doesn't work because I changed address because of spam and forgot to adapt my settings here in the board :(

Anyone who has one of these devices: I've searched through the manuals of the MC-supported devices and it appears that none of them support sending music to or managing a 'now playing' queue on the device.   Do any of these devices support a queue?

Thanks for your help.

SMC EZ-Stream (and perhaps the other devices that seem to behave very similarly to it) supports a pretty full featured AVTransport, but no true support for playing playlists.

What this means is that you could discover the mediaclient's AVTransport, and command it to go to a new URL (of content on MC, or probably any HTTP accessible song) and it will start playing that song.  I tested this with the Intel UPnP media client and telling my EZ-Stream to go to a new URL.

However, you cannot point it to a playlist (.m3u or similar) and have it become aware of all the tracks in the list to allow true skipping tracks forward and backward.  It cannot directly play a playlist URL at all, so there is not really a queue on the mediaclient.  I was pleasantly surprised even remotely commanding it to a single song URL worked though.

Basically View schemes work with my Terratec Noxon but for some view schemes (or subfolders in them) I still have the problem that the Noxon jumps back to it's start screen after trying to go into a scheme/folder. It seems to me as if the Noxon has some kind of timeout and interrupts if it doesn't receive the answer from the server fast enough. I'm not sure if this is a problem of the Noxon or can be a solved on the server side.

Since the database architecture has been changed in MC11 I have realized that accessing playlists and view schemes has become much slower than in previous versions. So far I've thought that this is because of the alpha/beta status but maybe it's caused by the new database format? The fast access even to large media collections has always been one of the big advantages of MC so I hope the final version will handle the database faster than the current builds.

Should I mention this in the MC11 thread too or are you aware of this already?

Hi eso,

my Noxon sometimes jumps back to start, too. Timing seems to be a problem, because this behaviour seems to be pretty random (although it might be possible that a bad WLAN connection could be the reason)...

Hi Martin,

(although it might be possible that a bad WLAN connection could be the reason)...

In my case the WLAN connection is ok. While experimenting with the Noxon I have it near my access point and the Noxon shows the signal quality to be excellent.

I think there is a bug somewhere in the Windows networking for wireless.  When a packet gets dropped, it sometimes doesn't recover.  This could account for the Noxon problem.

If you want to test the theory, try hooking it up with a cable.

Bad to hear about such problems, I already ordered my Noxon yesterday.  :o

Do you experience same problem with other UPNP servers as well??
Please try out to differentiate if the problem is Noxon related or related to MC so we can ask for fixing at the right place.

Thanks
Raist

P.S. Does it happen always on the same scheme/folder or randomly?

Previously I used the TwonkyVision server which did not have such a problem. But it also doesn't have dynamic view schemes like MC. It seems to me as if the problem is the time that MC needs to prepare the dynamic list.

I can reproduce it with one of my own view schemes.

If it's a timing issue, then the Noxon may not be waiting long enough.  That's possible.

If you'd like to report the problem to them, we could help them test it.

You might also be able to re-organize your view schemes to speed up the response.  Start a new thread if you need help.
