Media Center 11.0.183 Beta Available
« on: January 28, 2005, 07:19:07 pm »

We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  Some plugins still do not work.

We recommend that you use MC10 below, but if you want to use MC 11 while we're building it, PRICES are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110183.exe

1. Optimized: Nearly all menu submenus are dynamically filled on access for faster and leaner menus.
2. Changed: Added "Display" sub-menu to display right-click menu.

I'll Say!!! Thankyou also.

I was wondering, the unified OSD sounds great. Is the OSD font and orientation configurable? As it is, it looks pretty awful on my TV but would be great if I could shift it slightly to the right and make it bigger (like ffdshow allows).

Thanks again.

here's a display problem that's been here for awhile. was just too lazy too post until now. it's when the "seq" column is visible.

..and is there anyway I could change the color showed by the arrow without changing the face color?

  • control bar (always show) is overlaping the display shown.

Rename files using Properties
  • Multiple renames (save tag already in progress) shows incorrect info to be changed.
  • 'Tab' key does not goto 'Rule' edit box.

Hi there,

Since a while Media Center always freezes when I'm switching to "Playing Now" after shuffling all songs and playing them.

Where the visualisation should appear, I get a huge blue screen with some red and yellow boarders. Also the letters "PLAY" appear pretty large and when I click something "WAITING" shows up, and the music freezes for a while. I can't change any visualisations, so actually I never can go to "Playing Now" if I don't want the programm to freeze.

Any ideas?

Oh, I just tried something: I played music, paused it, went to "Playing Now" and then I was able to change to "Show Cover Art". This way I can play music now without Media Center freezing. However, I would love to see visualisations again one day ...    ;)

Thanks,

Mighty A-MAN

"Rename File From Properties" when "Use Assorted" is checked; sometimes the last track isn't put into the Assorted directory and is created its own directory based on the Artist name. I've only had this happen on albums over 18 tracks long.

since the last couple of release I can't play a smartlist anymore in netremote (via RemoteServer.dll)
playing something in the media library works fine (as long as 'show in theatre view' is checked) :

LX "PLAY" "Media Library\Audio\Artist/Album\U2" "-1"

but playing a smartlist stopped working recently :

LX "PLAY" "Playlists\Auto Smartlists (music)\Random -- one hour" "-1"

also, If I do :

Set MJPlaylists = myMJ.GetPlaylists
MJPlaylists.GetNumberPlaylists

via the COM interface, I see 0

I tried to use the disc# field like so

album xxxx disc# 1  track 1
album xxxx disc# 1  track 2
album xxxx disc# 1  track 3
...
album xxxx disc# 2  track 1
album xxxx disc# 2  track 2
album xxxx disc# 2  track 3
...

the complete album flag is 0 even though both discs are complete...

Maximising the window (on my 1400x1050 display) with the library browser in view doesn't expand the columns ... i.e. there are still only 3 albums on each row (and a load of blank space on the right). However, if I resize the window manually it shows 4 albums each row and fills the entire view.

Also a little thing, editing the Album name and then, without pressing return or tab, clicking on another album in the album view item list; the list doesn't refresh, so I'm stuck with an item that doesn't reference anything until I refresh it some other way.

Handheld bug (Toshiba E740):

Added two songs to be tranferred to the handheld
Copied the two songs from "in-queue" to another folder on the handheld
Deleted the orginial two files in the first folder
Began transfer and it says "tranferring 1 of 4 files"
Transfers the two files then comes up with a "Transfer Error", files already exist
Then the display of the first folder shows the originals plus the copies in an "uploading" status
The display at the "copied to" folder shows the two files with "uploading" status

On the PDA, the files were copied to the first folder location only.

Hope this makes sense, fairly easy to repro.

Also, perhaps I've missed something in the meantime.  I've got my PDA set up for Synch (MS ActiveSynch)  using the wireless network.  I notice that MC will not recognize the device as connected when using this method.

Is this intended?

Other than this, MC 11.183 is performing flawlessly and extremely fast on this media server.

TiVo Server seems to be broken, unless I've set something up wrong (although nothing has changed in my setup since the first build of 11). I get the following error in the TiVo server plug-in:

Warning: Bad URL argument(container) Details=Basic

I'm able to browse the library just fine, however no matter what song I pick, it plays the first song in the library.

With .162 and .183, if I click on a "Drives & Devices" hard disk folder containing mpeg files, MC crashes as soon as it starts to build thumbnails. 100% repeatable with multiple folders.

"Application Error - The instruction at 0x7c910f29 ref'd memory at 0x514f5a4e. The memory could not be read."

((Can automatic creation of thumbnails be turned off?))

Also, unrelated I think, playing "HalfD1" mpegs (352x480) created in WinTV play back at half width (not what HalfD1 refers to!) -- WMP does this too so it might be a file problem at my end, though DVDs of these created in Nero play with correct aspect ratio. Would be nice to be able to compensate for aspect ratio and play back HalfD1 mpegs.

Problems at transfer to IPOD plus a search problem:

Problem 1: Crash
When trying to transfer to my IPOD (first time I try this) I have gone trhough this sequence a few times:
-I start synchronising
-MC says "Please remove these files": This includes missing files, the first run it also included Windows Media files where MC indicated media rights problems.
-I locate the missing tracks using the search funcition and delete them

- I either try to transfer again or close the "Sync handheld" window. Either way MC crashes.

Problem 2: Existing files reported missing.

Some of the files reported as missing were both existing and playable. Deleting them from the MC database helped me going around the problem, of cours at the cost of not having the transfer.

Problem 3:
While I work with a selection of files according to a search result, blanks are inserted i the "search" field, both between words and at the end of the search string.

After installing and re-importing my library there were thousands of errors in import. Some files it failed to import were in fact imported so that is a mystery.

What I found interesting is that it failed to import any tracks under 10 seconds long. Most of my Sound Effects collection fits into the catagory.

Check the setting in Import (Advanced) for whether to import small files.

Hey Steve:
It shows as a "Mobile Device".

I forgot to mention that I had been running ActiveSycn 3.7 and was having problems with MC just seeing the PDA, then I upgraded to 3.8 and there were no problems with the recognition, other than as I mention with the wireless synch option.

A minor flaw:

I have a fixed Windows activity field at the left of my screen. When I open the MC11 Help window, it is partly hidden behind the activity field. I am using Windows XP.

1. dvd volume too quiet. long time bug. Have to turn up wave volume and main volume to full and crank up the speaker volume.
(dvd played in "WinDVD" plays fine. loud and clear. I guess MC is using that software to play the dvds so i dont know why there would be a sound level difference.)

2. Visualisations flicker and slow down whenever i move the mouse. this is bad for the spectrum analyser visualisation. it stutters and freezes just by me moving my mouse. not even clicking or performing any actions.

3.wave volume in the windows volume mixer is being changed by MC rather than the main volume. Is this a change in behaviour or a bug? It's annoying for me because it causes my albums to distort on playback. I need to keep my wave volume at half and turn the main volume up to full, for clear playback.

4.scrolling with arrow keys through the thumbnails in the library is awkward. I want right click to continously scroll me through all the thumbnails, but instead it just stops when it hits the rightmost thumbnail in the row rather than moving to the next row.

5.shift click on visualisation window from full screen video mode doesnt work. it causes the window to minimize instead. and you can't bring it back up. you have to right click on it, close it (which then brings media center up) go to playing now, and then shift click on the "window view" button. but then even that doesnt work properly. It causes the "window view" window to open at a ridiculous size. You then have to manually resize it. You have to do this each time.

I guess you know about MC's size upon load problem too by now.

6.tag editing while visualisation window is open over the library doesnt work. If you F2 to write in a field, you might be able to type a couple of letters but then its like the focus has been stolen by something else. You have to click back in the field and F2 again to continue typing.

7.Copy and paste a viewscheme and "working" window pos up and never disapears.

8.My "recently aquired" view scheme which only shows files in the "recently imported" and "recently ripped" playlists isnt sorting correctly. I want it to sort by starting with the most recently aquired. Sorting by "seq z-a" used to do this but doesnt any more for me.

In the "Pick files to show" option in the view scheme, I cannot select "Filename (path)",  which was possible in MC.  "Filenamne (name) is still there, but the far more useful "Filename (path) seems  to have disappeared.  I hope this is not a design choice, it looks more like an error.

When viewing images, why does "PLAY" and "PAUSE" keep flashing at the bottom of the display?

Does this have to do with item (10) in the above change log?  If so, please consider removing this feature for image playback.

Here's my latest MC journey with the iPod:

I think MC's having some problems updating the database correct. First off it added the same song like 10 times (in the album view on the iPod.) Than I tried re-uploading it, however it wasn't added to the dB so I couldn't access the album at all.
Then I tried rebuild dB from iPod or whatever it's called but than it really screwed  up, and only half of the songs where in the database after a sync,
So I grew sick of it, and initialized the iPod, but MC couldn't even  get than right, as I had to restart MC before it realized that it had been cleared (before restarting it said that there wasn't enough space...)

Hope you guys will look into this.
Thanks,
Rasmus

Still having a problem connecting to a library server.  Connections always go out to port 80 regardless of what's specified for a port.

This has been here for a while but finally got around to posting this.

In Mini-Me mode,  I'm using Blade Skin,  Right-Click->"Quick Play"->"Playing Now"  Will not change songs.  "Quick Play"->"Media Library"->etc..  works.  Just not on the current playing List.  I think the QuickPlay Media Library was fixed in 172 or something like that.

Tanguero,

The bug of crashing after deleting non existant files when transferring to Portables is fixed in the next build. For the files which are reported as missing that are present and playable, is MC reporting that you have duplicate files in your transfer? If not, what is the exact message in regards to these files?

Thanks,

Steve

3.wave volume in the windows volume mixer is being changed by MC rather than the main volume. Is this a change in behaviour or a bug? It's annoying for me because it causes my albums to distort on playback. I need to keep my wave volume at half and turn the main volume up to full, for clear playback.

Disable "Optimize volume" in startup options.  Note that keeping wave maxed and adjusting the master will give you the best S/N ratio with almost all hardware. (which is why MC does this by default)

Mike,

From your information, it appears MC is detected your PDA as a WMDM device. Please try accessing your PDA with WMP and see if the faulty behavior you are seeing is the same. When you reply, can you inform me what version of WMP you are testing and whether you have configured for MTP support.

Thanks.

So I grew sick of it, and initialized the iPod, but MC couldn't even  get than right, as I had to restart MC before it realized that it had been cleared (before restarting it said that there wasn't enough space...)

Not sure I follow the problem at this point. Try reinitializing the iPod and wait until it is finished then start again. The other problems could have been caused by many other things than MC. No one else has reported a similar issue.

Steve

It may have been caused by other stuff. I don't know... When I reinitialized the iPod, MC didn't detect that the whole drive was available (space wise) till MC was restarted (i.e. it said that there wasn't enough space on the drive, but there was...)

Do you have a clue what might have caused it?

Rasmus,

Not sure. If ever you see what you think is an incorrect space reported (especially after a reinit) check in Explorer to see what it reports as the free space  to see verify where the problem might be.

Hey Steve.
I should probably be more detailed:

step 0.5: Plug in the iPod. Everything screws up.
step 1: Initialize the iPod with MC. MC does not recognize that the iPod has been initialize, so it won't sync the iPod smart list. It's about 10-12 gb. The iPod is 14 gb. Step 2: Check windows explorer. It  does recognize that the iPod has been initialized.
step 3: Restart MC. Okay, so now MC recognize that the iPod has been initialized (again, the initialing process was done with MC)
step 4: Sync. Everything works out now.

I'm using the current build of MC.
BTW the auto update works really great... at least the idea, however it may have caused the problems described in my first post. I don't know.

Cheers,
Rasmus
BTW2: Maybe this discussion should be moved to the handheld forum?

Hi Steve,

Unfortunately I didn't get a screen copy of the error message, and I don't remember the exact pharasing, but I think it was about missing files. It's possible that duplicate files were mentioned too, but I'm not sure.

Now, the MC is indicating duplicate files (which could be correct), but I don't have the problem any more, deleting the problematic tracks from the database and then importing them again seemed to help.

I second that emotion.
It's a work in progress.

Thanks Jim!  I figured as much.  I guess part of my issue with it is that I don't see the reason for it.  Is this something that people have been calling for?  Is there some future plan?  I've been pre-occupied with work for the last two months, so maybe I missed it, of course ...

It could be cool if configurable I suppose (though it's value would certainly increase if the background behind the text were transparent rather than the black), but it would be something that I ... personally ... wouldn't use.  Either way, thanks for the update!

I installed 183 last night, and I tried to import my 8000 WMA Lossless files.  Unfortunately, a large percentage of the files seemed to be skipped.  For a typical album with 10 songs, maybe 6-7 made it into to the library.  Of those that did come in, some of the tags didn't make the leap to the library either.

1. When MC finishes analyzing large number of files, the analyzing window never displays " completed" and the exit button stays greyed out, even though the file analysis is compleeted.
2. Importing seems to take longer than it should and the number of files imported into the library is reported incorrectly.  Also, while MC is searching for new files, parts of the previous dialogue window GUI remain on the screen.

Rasmus,

After you initialize the iPod, are you saying that MC still thinks there are files on it?

After everything is ok (step 4) are you saying when you reconnect iPod you are back to steve .5?

Lets take further discussion of this up on the Portables board. Just open a thread there.

Thanks.

Steve:
Yes, that appears to be the case, is there another method besides WMDM for detection that would be preferrable in this case?

I tried a copy in the similar manner and it appeared to work as intended.  I have WMP 9.00.00.3250 and it uses the same apparent method as it initiates ActiveSynch to get to the PDA.   I am not familiar with MTP support, so not sure what to look for there.

Thanks,
Mike
