MC Crashes when I try to initialize my iPod Photo....
« on: February 24, 2005, 02:33:03 am »

I just installed MC and want to use it with my iPod Photo.  When I click on handheld devices, it tells me I need to initialize my iPod, and to right click on the iPod drive.  When I do this, MC crashes.  I am running XP.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Whoa, wait a minute. MC works perfectly fine with the iPod Photo -- but only for music. Unless you guys just disabled something, I've been using my iPod Photo with MC11 since day 1, as have many other MC users.

Music is all I care about at this point.  Any idea why I would be crashing?

I got it to work.  I had to "restore" the iPod now it works fine.

tlongacre,

Thanks for the clarification. I was referring to modifications to get photos to work as well.

As I've posted before my Ipod photo "skips" songs that I've transferred using MC but not if I restore it and then use Itunes.

Also the "transfer info to MC" doesn't work on "last played" or "number played" data.

Hoping Steve will find time to look at these sometime.

John.

Please report the version you're using whenever you report a problem.  Thanks.

John,

In regards to the skipping, for a file that is skipping, look carefully at what MC is reporting as the 'duration' for the file. If it is not 0, then look at what MC reports for the file location. Verify through Explorer that the file is actually at the location that MC reports.

In regards to the synching, I may need to tweak how MC interacts with the iPod Photo to get this to work.

Sorry Jim - I'm running MC 11 build 199 - though the issues have been present in all the builds since I bought the Ipod photo a couple of weeks back.

Steve,

Thanks for trying to help.

Synched a special random palylist of 1 hour to the Ipod and listened to it all the way through. 14 tracks played and 7 were skipped which is about par for the course.

Looked at the 7 and all had the same "duration" as the file on my hard disk - none were "zero" or anything like it. Noted their locations and they were in different "Ipod control/Music/F" folders except 2 were in the same "F" location. It looked absolutely OK.

Checked in Win Explorer and the files were in the folders they should be - and had the "correct" file size in MBs.

So it all seems to check out.

Baffled! Any thing else I can try?

TIA. John.

John,

So some files skip and others don't, correct?

If you delete and retransfer 5 songs that play fine and 5 that skip 3 times, is the behavior always the same? If so, email me a skipping file and I will transfer it to my iPod Photo (now that I have one) and see if I can replicate and then fix this.

Hello Steve,

Yes that's right - but I can't determine any difference between the skipping files and any others. They all play fine on my 3 gen Ipod, play fine from the Ipod photo connected to the PC and play fine in MC 11 build 211 as they have in all previous builds.

An example is on its way to you via email as you kindly offered.

Anything you can do to spot what is different about this file or if you can duplicate the issue on your Ipod photo would be really helpful.

Many thanks. John.
