State of our YADB by Long Ryders
« on: October 19, 2002, 11:27:11 am »

I checked many cds,to see if in YADB data.
Cannot say how much ,but can say how long: 3 shelfs 65 centimeters long.
11 cds not on YADB.Most of them on cdbb. But with mistakes.DreamSindicat,All songs with the name Various Artists and so on,

YADB is the total winner concerning different matches: more than 100 for one cd.....

Nice! I think I've gotten the bugs out of the lookup process, though I'm still checking.

I don't understand the 100 matches for 1 CD, can you explain?

One thing that makes me curious: if I search for a popular CD by title/artist (y'all can't do this quite yet, but soon), I get 10 responses, but if I put the CD in MJ, I only get 1. My theory is that the other 9 are home-burned.

So - do y'all do a lot of home-burned CDs with YADB, FreeDB or CDDB?

The cd is a one song cd:
Shadow to you performed by Giant Sand  from the forthcoming  soundtrack Degrees.
When i put this cd to YADB i got the window with matches found. There is around 100 of them but not the cd.

With cdb,i got few matches, but  not one for the cd as well.
Al mes cds from yesterday are regular cds.Only 2 are live bootleg. One was on cdbb but with mistakes.I uploaded the correct infos to YADB,the other one i have to load the infos.Wil do it today

If of any interest:
Rain Parade  live in Atlanta '85
Green on Red  Interesting...Dangerous

cds not on YADB [well now they are]

Jack Water  Whose Dogs?  ex Green on Reed drummer on german label

The petals   Parahelion  ' private-indee' US label

Black Sun Legion  Psycho Master El  San Jacinto records US

Tom Stevens Another Room and Points Revisited
ex Long Ryders guitar on MIAA records US

Green on Red Archive vol 1 What we are  thinking? Normal records Germany

Maryane Your first,your last,your everything
ex Sidewinders\Sand Rubies   Contingency records US

True West The big boot live  Bring your dead records US

Viva Saturn Soundmind Normal records Germany

Dream Syndicate  Ghost Stories  Retless records US

Not to find this Dream Syndicate cd was a surprise
True west and Viva Saturn as well.

Anyway keep in mind i did like 2 meters of cds,so very good result.

Feel like i may try some psy from 60' today. Not that much because 80% are in vinyl

John

Trying to get infos from one song was quite a mistery with cdbb.
One song in double[yes of cause from Hillary software] with the same tags. One you get infos, the other one no.

Concerning the cd with so much matches. The song is "shadow to You" and i get a lot of albums with Sun in the name.Like a kind of Google search.

If you can find out.....

I was afraid of that: during the process to eliminate duplicates we are may be deleting the right record from Yadb, the one which is from the original CD instead to delete the ones which are from home-burned CD.

So when we lookup Yadb with an original CD, Yadb don't know it anymore...

I hope to be wrong.

Peut etre.
Maybe but not sure.
First how do you delete?
If i get two entrys with one with genre or year wrong,i delete it.
If i get one all IN BLOCK LETTERS ,i delete it.
I may delete  infos from an original cd.But who care to get spelling mistakes, crazy genre or VGFTRE letters?.
If i have 2 entrys the same with different years,i try to check out.Well if i want to be really fair,if it is music i like i try,if not i do not delete. One of yours may know this record and make a better job than me.

What we are doing maybe far to be perfect, but ,as far as i know it is the first time someone cares about cleaning this kind of data.
As i said in another post i am strongly against having genre in the data.
It is up to people to put the style they want.
If you are to the point to not know what you are listening to ,better to sell your computer and spend the money on social workers...

If you delete all duplicates but one which is not coming from an original CD (or a perfect clone), Yadb will not recognize the original CD.

For example, it is possible that a clone built through an "audio project" of a burning software instead of by direct copy may generate a wrong duplicate.

A perfect Yadb record, I mean "all fields perfectly fulfilled" doesn't ensure that this record has the right "signature to recognize an original CD.

Remember what John said:

if I search for a popular CD by title/artist (y'all can't do this quite yet, but soon), I get 10 responses, but if I put the CD in MJ, I only get 1. My theory is that the other 9 are home-burned.

A question to John: Which criterias yadb uses to recognize a CD ?

only track lengths and number of tracks ?

>> Which criterias yadb uses to recognize a CD ?
it is basicly the same way has CDDB and FreeDB

They count the tracks and the play times of the tracks

this creates a TOS and this gives the MJ the ID of the cd

With some burning software you are able to remove silent part of the track, or to change "pre-gap". May be adding CDTEXT information could be also a problem to recognize the CD.

Otherwise how to explain what John said:

if I search for a popular CD by title/artist (y'all can't do this quite yet, but soon), I get 10 responses, but if I put the CD in MJ, I only get 1. My theory is that the other 9 are home-burned.

Michel
I get your point.Kind of zebra.White with black strips or black with white stripes?
Of cause someone doing it as it has to be done can upload 100% good infos from a burned cd.And an idiot can mess around uploading infos from a 'real' cd.
John may get 10 entrys from one song because the seach is artist/name song based and the cd is 'tag cd' based.I do not know,i just wonder.
But ,as far as you let people upload infos,i do not see any solution.
Only if there is a way to accept 'real cd' only upload.Again i do not know if such a thing possible.

Keep in mind that  beneath[?] the get infos for cd,one of the killer features inMJ is to get infos for a song you got from p2p software. To have it as clean as possible is important, but maybe people will do with x entrys as far as they got the info.
In cdbb sometimes you can see the infos of each entrys. If you know what about you are dealing ,you can see f one entry is good of not.

Again i may be wrong but as far as i see ,the only way to get infos about a cd in 'cdplayer.ini' is to get it from a data or to upload to a data.To have infos in 'cdplayer.ini' means that everytime you put the cd in the cdr ,you get the infos.

I have many auto-produced israelis  metal and punk records. I rip them to make mp3 cd to friends.
They are not in any data.
What i want is to  put artist name and album name.No need to put songs names. Most of the time they are in hebrew, and i do not feel like translating it.
Beside it,if i send you such a cd,what is important to you is to know  the name of the band and the album.
You may want me to send you the real cd,or to get it in better format.

If i put the cd from The Astroglides  'Fonding with... and just type this.I do not get infos in  cdplayer.ini
If i upload it to cdbb with no tracks name-or with tracks a-b-c-d  to YADB,i do get infos in 'cdplayer.ini'

They need to find a way in MJ to put infos for a non 'real' cd in 'cdplayer.ini' without uploading into YADB

To MachineHead

In the meantime (pendant ce temps là ?) may be we should stop to delete duplicates from YADB until to be sure we are not deleting "original CD" records.

What do you think John ?

Sauvignon blanc fume- e with an '-...i am coming
This is good.
Can i be serious for a short time?

As you know everyone as a kind of 'image of Epinal'-sorry use Google- about others.
Americans do not have such a good image. To make short kind of Forest Gump[ celestial idiot],drinking coca with oysters[NOT from mountains...],puting  sparkling water in the most best  wine, and thinking that culture is a 4 letters word.
And anyone can say such a thing about the other.

Here on interact, you get the real picture. You 'speak ' to people who have nothing to do with the 'image of Epinal' who is stick to them. And this people see that the 'image of Epinal" sticks to you is as much not the  real picture.

JimH  even if this your only achievement, let me tell you that it is a great one.

Now ,please do not tell me 'MY god'.I am not to sell ...just to rent  to  the one with the bigger suicide  bomb...no matter the color of the skin and the faith

Wow, go away for 24 hours and ...

Michel et al: don't worry about deleting duplicates. The duplicate finding algorithm is based on how normal lookups are done, not on the name.

Zevele: I guessed this: about the 1 song CD. I don't know what to do here. The lookup algorithm is based on a hash and on some offsets. But the hash is computed off the table of contents (like the offsets) and 1 song CDs (whether "real" or burned) tend to turn up the same. Take a look at the stats page. The top winners are all one song CDs (I'll get around to fixing this in a day or so).

The rest of the world: I got very few responses; how often do you lookup home-burned CDs.

j

Not listening to anything at the moment (just finished with Radiohead, Tool, Bauhaus, Tom Waits, and Harry Nillson).

Image d'Epinal = stereotype?prejugé?
we should have a forum to share vocabulary and misc. phrases + quotes with each other. Although it might frighten new users off...
Qui/qu' était Epinal?

As for YADB, no matter how good you make the sorting algorithms, human intervention will always be the best way. You should enlist people to do the good deed, as long as they obey certain guidelines: no setting genres too precise (don't put Dust Rock, just rock - nobody can disagree that way, and nobody in their right mind wants to sort their music in that sort of detail - you either feel like listening to rock music, or not - you'll never want to listen to JUST dust rock, which in anycase i'm sure you can just search for the band/bands that do it; if you're in that specific a mood there aren't that many bands you feel like listening to.

MJ definitely needs individual YADB file lookups; not entire cd's. This may already be a feature of MJ9; I'm not involved in the beta testing (though i'd like to, if you are interested in lower spec PC performance.

You should have a page listing the new features in MJ9; and some screenshots: make us want it bad.

image d'Epinal=yes as you say.
Sometimes you care to seach and put links, sometimes  you don't.

In this case ,Jimh do understand some french ,so i just put it down without links.

Epinal is a town ,where the did -or do- images=pictures.
Will put a link latter.

Concerning genre,my position is to not have genre when uploading cd infos.

I saw ,and i see now 'cleaning'YADB such  S.. [sorry but yes it is] concerning genre, that better not to allow anyone to upload genre.

Dust rock? Close to Desert Rock? Or to Hoover Rock?

Never heard of Turin Blakes.
Is it industrial rock? Or :in DUST rial Rock?

To be serious would like to know about Turni Black

There is something like 6 and a half people having this cd.And only one of them using YADB.

To this day, what amaze me if to get albums with the word SUN  when trying to get infos for a song with
