What is with the "XXXXXX" Files?
« on: October 15, 2002, 10:16:01 am »

When I convert WAVs to MP3 I get a lot of zero byte files who's name is the MP3s name with six "X"s appended to it.

Example Dir command:
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+06-+Tatters.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+07-+Future Farmers of America.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+07-+Future Farmers of America.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+08-+Turning Time Around.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+09-+White Prism.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+09-+White Prism.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+10-+Rock Minuet.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+10-+Rock Minuet.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+11-+Baton Rouge.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+11-+Baton Rouge.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+12-+Like A Possum.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+12-+Like A Possum.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+13-+Rouge.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+13-+Rouge.mp3.XXXXXX
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+14-+Big Sky.mp3
2000-+Rock-+Lou Reed-+Ecstasy-+14-+Big Sky.mp3.XXXXXX

What is up with these?

Also, sometimes when I go to tag these MP3s, the files that have one of these associated zero byte "X" files, do not retain the tagged information. I have to tagg these files twice. That is why I include the date and genre in the file name of the WAV. I also use "-+" as the field seperarator since that combination of chars doesn't appear in any of my CDs.

"...the pictures show the end of the world - not in a sudden firestorm of dammnation as the Bible teaches us, but in a slow covering blanket of snow. First the moon and the stars will be lost in a dense white fog, then the rivers and the lakes and the sea will freeze over. And finally a wolf named Skoll will open his jaws and eat the sun, sending the world into an everlasting night.

I think I hear the wolf at the door."

X=10
You have six X=60.
Means that all the MP3 with XXXXXX will fit on a 60 minutes cassette
.A better than nothing answer[...?...] for now.

But,as you ,would like to know

And you'll notice that the posts that get serious answers are the ones that stay near the top.

jgourd: Might be helpful if you posted your system info here. In MJ, Help>System Info>Copy To Clipboard.

Also, do you get the same type of results when you do not use + as a separator?

I think thats a bug, it may have something to do with the new mp3 ID3v2 taging write to temp file, make sure it is written, then delete the orginal and then rename the files with xxxxxx to the orginal file.

I have not looked yet on my drive for this, but i guess i will later when i get home.

Or like i said it could be part of the X-Files

King (Mark), the XXXXXX files are zero bytes so I have been throwing them away.

What I have noticed is that the MP3s that get a 6X zero byte file are also the ones that when loaded into the "Currently Playing" playlist, have no tags.

When I go to create new tags and save them, I can see that one of these 6X files gets created and deleted every time an MP3 is saved with a tag.

I am going to guess that these are some form of temp file that gets deleted after a sucessful tagging operation. Since the "Convert Format" function failed to save the tags in almost all the files, those that failed did not get their temp file deleted.

King,

>>it may have something to do with the new mp3 ID3v2 taging write to temp file, make sure it is written, then delete the orginal and then rename the files with xxxxxx to the orginal file

That's exactly what it is. X'ing occurs if source file is read only or possibly has corrupt tags (in which case the copy will not be zero bytes, but identical to source in all aspects except name).

Forgot to mention, I think a wolf eating the sun is very, very serious.  Or so thought the early Norsemen.  (The real Norsemen, not the ones who pretend to play football now.)
