Media Center 11.0.252 Release Candidate
« on: April 29, 2005, 04:57:45 pm »

We're just about ready to release Media Center 11.0.  We appreciate your bug reports.  PRICES are here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311  Please post bugs you're sure about here.  Post anything else in a new thread with a subject like "MC11 problem with ..." or "MC11 question about ....".    Feature requests should be postponed until we've finished 11.0.

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110252.exe

11.0.252 (4/29/05)

1. Changed: In TV Options, "Automatically Import to Media Center" checkbox is renamed "Automatically Import Recorded Video".
2. Changed: Some tooltip texts and dialog window names in TV Options are changed to avoid name conflicts and to increase consistency.
3. Fixed: Download Manager Options window resized when switching from one page to another, causing visual distortion.

5. Fixed: Options window would re-center everytime one switched to another page.
6. Fixed: Download Manager Options window used wrong icon.
7. Fixed: Pressing stop while Media Center was paused could cause a dead-lock on W2K.
8. Changed: Added a small margin to the right of list text so the text won't run right up to a gridline.

11.0.251 (4/28/05)

1. Fixed: When switching visualizations with the right-click menu, they would not always stay selected when restarting playback.
2. Changed: Upon entering the TV channel scanning dialog window, scanning will automatically start without waiting for the user to click the "Scan" button if the channel list is empty.

8. Fixed: When clicking an item in a pane and then pressing play, the expected files would not always start playing.
9. Changed: In-place editing doesn't use auto-complete comboboxes for name and filename fields. (since they have lots of values (slow) and also because they're generally unique values)
10. Fixed: After closing Skin Manager, MC would not accept keyboard shortcuts until it was first clicked.
11. Fixed: Viewing a burn list while an existing data CD was in the drive could cause a crash.
12. Fixed: List tooltips could show the wrong information if a dialog was shown, the mouse moved, and then the dialog canceled with the keyboard.
13. Fixed: The burning option to "Prefix List Order" would not work properly unless a Custom naming scheme was being used.
14. Fixed: Working with partially filled lists could be overly slow.
15. Fixed: Better radio station support for Library, UPnP and TiVo Servers.
16. Changed: Option to filter out international characters to UPnP devices, since they are not yet supported.

Import directory view does not allow enough space to view longer directory locations:

Example Given:  C:\Documents and Settings\Arthur Doodlebooper\My Documents\My Music\More Music

There is no way to see the total path currently.

Import still adds the imported tracks to Recently Imported playlist in an unknown/undesired order.  This was never a problem in MC10 and prior versions. This has been reported before and really degrades the Recently Imported feature if you use this playlist for specific needs (maintain album and track # import order for backups, for example).

Try this:
1. Put an unimported album in Playing Now and have it in Track # order
2. Select the tracks in Playing Now and right-click and Import them
3. Goto Recently Imported playlist
4. Notice the album you added is there in Recently Imported at the end, but the tracks are no longer in Track # order anymore.  The are in some random, MC11-generated order.  Manually re-ordering Recently Imported (using column clicks) loses the actual order you imported the albums in (which is important to me).  This all worked wonderfully before MC11.

You can also just view an album in a folder in My Computer and import it and get the same undesired results.  I believe importing from Windows Explorer (right-click menu for MC) does maintain the proper track # order (but, I forget now).

Things get even uglier if you import multiple albums at once as they get all shuffled in the Recently Imported playlist (at the end).  I imported 50 albums at once and, wow, what a mess in the Recently Imported playlist (the order, that is).

The "Download" part of the audible website still isnt working for me inside MC. I click on it and absolutely nothing happens. I have even set my firewall to allow all but no change.

1. DVDs don’t show up in the media library. They show up and can be played from Drives and Devices, but can’t be imported. For example I can playthe VTS_01_1 file from drives and devices and even change the “Name” and Genre” fields, but when I select import into library the file doesn’t import. No error, it just doesn’t show up in the Media Library section of the tree.

2. Can’t play a DVD from a network share. The same DVD plays fine from a local hard drive.

3. The removable field is not filled in when items are imported

4. Bitrate field for all MPEG video files is shown as some large number that bears no correspondence to the actual bitrate.

5. When moving photos to another location within “Drives and Devices” the photos are moved, but often the view of the folder the files were moved from is not updated properly (e.g. some of the moved files are still shown, but with an X through the thumbnail showing that the underlying file is no longer present). This occurs when moving files between network shares (where I keep my photos). I think all that should be necessary to fix this problem would be doing a refresh when the move is complete.

MC is refusing to see an avi file in its My computer view even though when I can see it in Explorer. Moreover, if I right click on it in explorer and import, media center doesnt import it. It does however play in Media Center. Strange. It's a DIVx mpeg4 V3 file.

Drag-and-drop from Windows Explorer to MC's Playing Now bugs.  I have "Automatically import files into Media Library" option disabled.

1. Drag some MP3 files from Windows Explorer and drop them on MC's Playing Now node in the org tree window and nothing happens (MC unfocused app / MC seen in the background).  The Play/Add to Playing Now/Cancel popup menu does not appear.

2. Drag some MP3 files from Windows Explorer and drop them on MC's Playing Now node in the org tree window and MC imports the files (MC focused using Alt-Tab while holding mouse click drag or drag to MC taskbar icon & then to MC's Playing Now node).  MC should NOT import the tracks.  You can choose Play or Add to Playing Now on popup menu and get the same wrong results (import and then play/add).

Both of these bugs do NOT happen if you drag-and-drop to MC's Playing Now content view window (if already visible of course / MC's focus does not matter).  For #2 bug, if you can't replicate you might try having MC's Media Library node highlighted prior to the drag-and-drop operations, but I don't think it matters.

While the UPnP server is actively serving files to my Roku M500, I can pretty reliably crash MC11.  If I try too many times to load a large playlist on the Roku, MC will crash.  Also, my server is normally displaying TheaterView.  If I go to the server and navigate around (show theater view options, MC options, etc.), MC will crash pretty quickly.  I will play around a bit more to see if I can get an exact set of keystrokes.  Usually, all I need to do is click around in the app.

If the UPnP server is not active, I do not see this behavior.

Old bug still there:

If you attempt to upload an MP3 (has to be MP3) track that is currently playing to a handheld (DELL DJ), the upload always fails with error 132.  It's as if the transfer function can't access the file because it's in use currently.

Small bug, when your in theater view and right click and choose mini view then right click and choose return to standard view it goes back to theater view. Right clicking again shows mini view still selected.

I’ve been talking you up and arguing with the foobar fanatics on other forums so lets go, it’s hard to convince these foo’s, release it already.

I've managed to hang this release 3 times within the past hour or so.  The first two times I'd copied about 150 music and picture files into my database and imported them into my 6,000+ file database (not large by any standards).  Both times the import proceeded just fine until it went into the phase of updating the thumbnails. I waited about 10 minutes for the process to complete and finally gave up.  It wasn't using much CPU time nor doing any I/O.  The database was fine after each hang/kill combination and the files I'd imported were all present.

The last hang, I have been unable to recreate; I'm just posting it in case others have seen it and to document what I've seen.  I was searching for files in Media Center and had hit TAB and Ctrl-TAB quite a few times (for some silly reason I thought TAB or Ctrl-TAB would take me out of the search box and on to other elements of the Media Center window).  I deleted several of the little boxes that represent TAB in the search box and, eventually, Media Center just quit responding -- I couldn't clikc into any area of the application's window and get any response.  Again, no CPU utilization to speak of and no I/O, either.

It's likely that you killed the program in the middle of thumbnailing.  If you have files on a network drive, this could take considerable time.

Quite possibly but there was no way to know what it was doing -- the main window wouldn't refresh when it became unobscured and the thumbnailing reminder never reappeared when I came back to the app.  I guess if there's anything I would ask out of this it would be that refresh be a higher (the highest?) priority.

There is a problem (seems to have deteriorated over the past few builds) with displaying album art in a client library using library server

The images are visible in the server library
If you look at the image tag in the client library - the tag data is missing in the client

It appears to be random: irrespective of length of filename
for a given album - only some of the image tags are missing

I don't think its network speed (1Gbit) or Memory (1Gb)

I use relative URLs to refer to the image, ie. \\SERVER\MUSIC2\ALBUM_ART

If I copy the server library to the local machine the images appear fine

Hi,

I have two issues with the current registered versions of MC11 (running on XP Pro SP2)

1) trying to import music from a folder (organised in subfolders per artist) with many music files (2868 Flac files that have been tagged with Tag&Rename) crashes the application. MC11 starts to add file to the library but stops at some stage and then dies with this usual message saying that the application needs to close and offers to send an error report to Microsoft. I tried several times, but it always crashes but not systematically on the same count.  I then imported some (10) of the artists subfoders one by one, it worked, I then tried again to import the rest of the big folder and this time it reached then end without crashing.

"One remark though, MC11 reports 2686 files out of the 2688 in the folder (2 missing files). Note that I am also using this folder with Slimserver and Slimserver indeed finds all the 2688 files. At the moment I have not identified the 2 missing files." Fixed (files under 10sec).

2) I have some Artists names and Genre that contains accented characters (French or German) and some of these are not imported correctly in MC11: for example one Artist name appears in MC11 with letters added added at the end: "Arvo Pärt" becomes "Arvo PärtR", some of them are even multiplied "Frédéric Hartmann" becomes "Frédéric Hartmannl", "Frédéric Hartmannts", "Frédéric Hartmannuu" and so on (in this case 10 of them are created).

Hope this helps,
Michel

V11 seems to have a small issue.  My WinXP Pro task bar is 2 rows high (quick launch on top row and open windows below), if you start MC all is fine, then after moving between programs and giving the focus back to MC it appears to have resized itself assuming that the taskbar is only 1 row high.

If you minimise then maximise all is ok again, the same as if you clcik the button next to minimise and then maximise again, all is ok.

Not a major issue but slightly annoying.

Your thoughts / comments would be appreciated.

Concerning the difference of 2 files in the count out of 2688, I found the cause, these 2 music files were under 10sec (part of soundtrack) and the import was set to exclude files under 10sec. So now at least the count is correct!

'Fix' request:

Under Library Browser -> ALBUMS you have the choice of Play and Files for each album displayed.  Can we get another choice for Artist so that you easily go to the ARTISTS tab and have the Artist selected for the Album you just came from?  Then, you could easily click Albums from there and see all the Artist's albums easily.

I've spent alot of time using LB lately and I'm constantly wanting to go see what other albums for an artist I have in my library when I'm reviewing the ALBUMS list.  The ARTIST view has Albums as a choice.  Only seems logical that the inverse should be true (ALBUMS should have Artist).

A siily but annoying one.

If you are tagging a CD prior to ripping (CD not found at YADB) and highlight a single track, the "name" field does not highlight "track 1" or whatever it is so you can't ovetype it you have to go to the end of the word and backspace or delete it before typing in the correct song title.

Fields like Artist, Genre and Album seem to work OK as does tagging multiple tracks.

Yeah that bug or feature is annoying to me too and not 'standard'.  It is diffinetely different that MC10 and I'm not sure it's an improvement (if intentional).

I'm talking about in-place tag editting for the Name field.  It does not auto-select the text when you press F2 to edit the Name.

Pop-up window problem:
I changed an album name (in the pane above the file list). When closing down the program some 20 minutes later, I saw a pop-up window stating : "Saving tag changes (12 remaining)".  I had to close down the program the hard way.

When I started the program again, all the tracks had the correct album name (the name I changed to).

Abend of Media Center on the Library Server end:

Been able to repro this one every time and I have done it with the General Log turned on.

- Start MC on my main box
- Start Library Server Plug-in (w/Auto detection on, auto port selection, no auth)
- Go to client machine, start another MC, connect/dl library
- While browsing images, waiting for thumbnails on the client side, Close the client MC (make sure it is trying to show the thumbnail)
- Go back to the MC server, Stop the Library Server
- MC crashes (see pic with msg right before crash)

Running a "b" wireless setup (all linksys) with the server machine hardwired into a port and the client wireless.

I have a problem with Media Center 11 loosing it's sort order in "Recently Imported". Here is what happens.

I import 200 songs with various artists and albums. I want to now move these into my playlist, which are a combination of artists and albums, both folder and sub folders.

It works fine if I create a new folder, and drop the files into the Drag and Drop box, the sort order does not change in "Recently Imported". The files that I had highlited and dropped into the box, I can now delete and move on to the next group.

The PROBLEM arises if I drop the highlited files into an existing folder, the files in "Recently Imported" are shuffled and loose their sort order. I now have to be very carefull to resort and delete the files that I just dropped into the existing folder.

This was never a problem in version 10

I have a very large library, so I am forever massaging my library.

I also noticed that with this large library it seems at times very slow moving around from one folder to the other.

Just like to say great job. I don't know why anyone would use any other player. Keep up the good work.

Cheers

Startup volume setting does not work.
I have it selected to set the volume to 45%
When I start MC the volume is set as it was when it was last closed.

During install, the Aruba skin shown is still the old version.

this version (252) is so slow for me it is almost unusable. It is taking Herculean patience to do anything (import, change a tag, play a song, analyse devices). I keep thinking it is not responding at all.

All the music is on a network device (HDD on a linksys network storage link), but I am connected wired (100mbps), not wireless and I have no problems accessing the files via Windows Explorer.

Deathly slow in MC, though.

I can confirm this error too

ToMy00,

If you are trying to add content that is already on your device, MC detects this and does not include it in the queue. There is a message that alerts you to this that you probably disabled (MC gives you the option to not show the message again).
