I just upgraded to MC11.0.264 and it's very slow or sometimes not responding. Could it be the size of the files that I have open (242G of .ape files)? Also finding cover art is only finding about 50% of the titles. Anyone else finding this problem? Is there a good tutorial for setup of J River MC11 other than this site?

When you hit a key it changes 2 minutes later or not at all! When I hit ctrl-alt-delete it says program not responding.

It's not the size of the database.  You must have around 8000 tracks?

It could be memory or even CPU.

Check what other programs are running.

Can you copy your system info from MC help and paste it here?

You may want to uninstall / reinstall and try with a fresh library.

MC shouldn't break a sweat with that few files if you have a modern machine.

JimH- I have 9700 tracks open and when I get home I will try to paste the info from MC help. It could be my processor, I thought a P4 2.53G with a gig of ram would be enough?
Matt- Will uninstalling it and reinstalling lose any data that I should be backing up.

Make a library backup in safe place.

Then uninstall and reinstall.  Try starting with a fresh library instead of your backup as a test.

We often test with 150000+ files, so 10000 should be a breeze.

A couple of builds ago I noticed some sluggish performance; definite lag during field entries. Everything seems good & snappy with .265  Have you made any major, or for that matter, any minor system changes lately?

Actually, I just noticed you have an ATI card. I used the windows System cache workaround for ATI cards (ATI cards have a delayed write failure that ends up need re-install of the OS when trying to optimize memory usage for system cache), and MC is even snappier than before. I have a GB of RAM and it's rec. for 512 and up. I used to select Options from Tools and it would take 2-4 seconds for the window to pop up....nowit pops up instantly.

Keep with it, MC is worth it.

I am unfamiliar with this workaround for ATI. I'm going to change OS to Media Center 2005, is the workaround still needed? I wonder if this will fix my HDTV Wonder from freeze and go video that it's experiencing? Thanx in advance for any help!

Data corruption may occur if the Large System Cache feature is enabled in Windows XP
This symptom does not occur on all systems. The key ingredients that lead to this symptom may include:

System Memory greater than 512 Meg. (1 gigabyte of RAM is common)
Large NTFS disk volumes. And multiple large volumes. (60-100 gigabyte hard drives possibly in RAID arrays)
AGP graphics with large AGP resource requirements (AGP aperture greater than default)
Large file transfers
This problem occurs when the computer runs out of system page table entries. Windows determines (at boot time) the default number of page table entries to assign, based on the amount of system memory available. The items mentioned above all contribute to increasing the number of page table entires that Windows XP must maintain and in extreme cases the page table entries may be exhausted.


To avoid this symptom ensure the System Cache option is NOT selected for Memory usage. Use the Programs option.
- right-click on the My Computer Icon then Properties to open the System Properties dialog box

- select the Advanced Tab then the Settings button under Performance

- select the Advanced tab on the Performance options tab

- in the Memory Usage area, ensure the Programs radio button is selected

- Apply the changes and select OK
 

It may be possible to work around this issue by increasing the value for page table entries, as follows,

WARNING: Please make a backup copy of your Registry before proceeding. If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

Launch the Registry Editor. Select the Start Button then Run. Type in regedit.exe and select OK.

Locate the SystemPages value under the following key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double-click the SystemPages value. The Edit DWORD Value dialog box appears.

Enter the maximum value (0xFFFFFFFF) , and then click OK.

Quit Registry Editor.

NOTE: 0xFFFFFFFF is the safest value however a value greater than the default but less than the maximum may provide better results.

NOTE: Changing the VALUE from the default may decrease performance by 1-2% .
