Tlongacre: MC11 import and handheld problems
« on: May 21, 2005, 08:32:28 am »

Two things:
 1.  Attempting to synchronize with a Creative Muvo N200 (which has worked successfully in the past) -- MC tries to "retrieving files info" (or something like that) for awhile then gives Media Core error. Even after fresh Unistall removing Registry Entries, reboot and reinstall.

 2.  After uninstall, reboot, reinstall mentioned above, open MC and notice that there are many files with no filenames. Hence file cannot be found. These are various filetypes, ages, folders, etc. Clicked on one such file and chose "locate on disk (inside MC)" which changed focus to C: in the directory tree. I clicked on M: (the networked drive where all my music is located), MC tries "gathering info and updating view" for a couple of seconds and then disappears. No error, just disappears.

tlongacre,

In regards to the Muvo, try deleting the Database.mpl file from the Muvo. It will be regenerated when it connects and perhaps this will solve the issue (assuming that the file is somehow corrupt).

Having said this, your second problem leads me to believe something bigger is the problem. It appears that MC is not recognizing the files on your networked drive which may be the root of your Muvo problem (in regards to synching). If you import a file from your M: drive, what happens?

Okay, I tried importing from the M: drive. It started okay and was looking through my iTunes directory, then I stopped paying attention and after about a minute, I got the following Media Core error:

AppName: media center.exe    AppVer: 11.0.274.0    ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180    Offset: 00011e58

If it is a problem trying to talk to the network, that would definitely explain why it keeps showing up no matter what I do.

Is it a Samba drive?

ntdll.dll isn't our file. It's a windows file.  Maybe try google for similar problems.

No it's not a Samba drive. I don't know what a Samba drive is.

My music is on a Maxtor externall HDD which is connected to my computer via a Linksys Network Storage Link device. It's been this way for a year and I've not had problems before.

Is the drive on a wireless network?

It could be, and I was connected wirelessly yesterday when I started having problems, but then I hooked the computer up wired and I still have the same problems. (Currently both the Network device and the computer are wired to the router).

I just tried to Import from my local C: drive and as soon as it started copying 1 of 6 files, I got this Media Core error:

AppName: media center.exe    AppVer: 11.0.274.0    ModName: media center.exe
ModVer: 11.0.274.0    Offset: 001d6d2c

no reply. . .

I didn't see anything listed, but is there any hope that today's build will help? I'm totally stuck at the moment.

Well, with today's build, I'm having the same problem with imports -- it makes a backup of my library, starts to import, then gives the Media Core error. This time it was this:

AppName: media center.exe    AppVer: 11.0.275.0    ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180    Offset: 00011e58

It seems to alternate between ModName: mediacenter.exe and ModName: ntdll.dll

This time I was trying to import Mp3 files, one folder on my local C: drive and one folder on the network M: drive.

For testing, if you start with a clean library and import a small number of mp3s from your local drive, do you still see the error?

OKay, using .276 now

First I did my usual -- open my default library and try to import, one small folder from C:, one small folder from M:. Got this Media Core error:

AppName: media center.exe    AppVer: 11.0.276.0    ModName: media center.exe
ModVer: 11.0.276.0    Offset: 00150492

But then I did what you said -- I started with a blank library.  I imported with the same parameters, the same files. It worked perfectly and quickly.

Does that say that I should now re-import my entire library? Or something else?

Re-import your whole library now.

Jim,

OK, I'm starting with my iTunes folder -- it's about 1200 files and on the network drive. So far, it is working, but it is verrrrrry slow. Why is it so slow connecting to the network? (I'm comparing this to my housemate who was importing from an external USB hdd which was lightning fast).

I mean, these might be slightly bigger files, but not really that much. And a USB connection is somewhat faster than a network connection, but that doesn't really seem to explain this slowness.

Or maybe I'm impatient? It is taking 6 seconds per song.

Okay, the import finally finished and now everything seems to be working much better with the new library.

But now I have a problem -- all my playlists! Is there some easy way to get them from my old library into the new one?

I tried opening the old library to do an export, but when I tried Export All Playlists, I just got the Media Core error. Then I reopened MC and tried to click on one playlist to just export it, but just clicking on the playlist group name caused the Media Core error.

I tried importing an older version of some playlists that I had exported awhile ago, but it didn't work. The import ran and at the end said it imported files, but no new ones, but no new playlists showed up on the list.

I don't remember it being so hard before. And I wonder if there is a way to extract them from the old library without opening it, exporting and then reimporting?

P. S. I haven't tried to sync with any handhelds yet. That'll wait until the weekend. But with .277 and the new library, I can change tags and move around with no Media Core errors, so that is a big improvement.
