Is there a problem with MP3 and MC?
« on: June 06, 2005, 01:06:42 am »

For some time now I've been having a little problem with Analyze Audio in as much as MC will start to analyze a group of tracks and then lock up at anywhere between 5 and 30 tracks. This is something I have brought up before and since it didn't seem to apply to many people I thoughtit was just my system.

In a similar vein, my son has just bought an Archos HD player and decided to load all his tracks on from the library. The majority of our tracks are in 320 Lame MP3 and he decided that to save some space he would convert down to 128 MP3.

When he tried to do this, once again at between 5 and 30 tracks, MC locked up. We tried the process several time and each time the result was the same so we tried converting to WMA 128 and bingo no problem, MC flew through 2000+ tracks overnight.

What I'm wondering is, is it just coincidence that both these problems relate to MP3 or is it something to do with the way that MC is handling MP3s?

Thanks

I analyzed about 40 tracks (all MP3) some days ago (with build 28?) and had no problems.

What build are you using?

You can copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Please try updating.

Also try the FAQ for ideas on the analysis problem.  It may be a hardware related issue.  This post is an example (defrag solved an import problem):

I have been having the same issues with recent builds. I kept locking up on some Burning Spear files....I just looked ...they are MPC. I am fully defragged.

MC won't even play these files apparently, it just continually buffers. I understand the Analyze Audio feature crunches a lot of cpu, but it really is hard to stop; you really have to wait a while. The display doesn't always accurately represent what it's doing either, the bar represents total progress but it will be 3/4 across while the count is stuck displaying 5 out 567 left. Maybe it needs looking as well as MPC issue.

I guess that is a different issue. I have no problems with MPC playback.

Is it possible that your MPC files have ID3v2 tags? They are nonstandard and among many other programs MC doesn't like them. It is a common reason for MPC problems. The tags should be in APE v2 format.

Can you send one of the files to matt at jriver.com?  Include a link to this thread.

Thanks.

Thanks.  That looks like a bad MPC file.

MC will have better handling of this case in the next build.  You may need to do "Update Library (from tags)" on the files.
