not sure if it's something funny about my setup but MC11 (build283) chokes on trying to rip it ... itunes did it fine. any idea why that would happen, i've never had any probs like that before. any one else have similar probs or is this just one of them weird one-off glitches?

when i say MC "chokes" i mean it gets as far as trying to rip the first track and just sticks there till i click cancel rip (which it does gladly). i left it half an hour and it doesn't change until i cancel the rip. i've ripped 3 other new cd's using MC today with no problems whatsoever.

yep rebooted, twice. but there was more to the story when i think about it. there was some weirdness when i put the cd in - it failed to connect to the YADB server and then 'hung' on the failure message. i couldn't get it to respond so i ended the task and rebooted. this time, the connection succeeded and it downloaded the info fine. i clicked on the cd drive in the tree view and changed the album name from X & Y to X&Y and clicked Rip, thats when the ripping problem started. i rebooted again and tried again, same result. put my new gorillaz cd in straight afterward, ripped no problems. tried to rip coldplay again, same problem so i tried it in itunes and it ripped fine.

i'll try it again in 20 mins or so and post again - i can't reboot at the moment.

just rebooted, same results. it does appear to be ripping, albeit at an unbearably slow rate. when i left it for ten mins or so it said transfer rate 0.1 and a little bit of progress bar showed up.

Do you have Secure ripping enabled? If żou have could you try Normal mode as a test? It's more like the mode iTunes uses (burst mode without secure error correction).

BTW, is the CD copy protected? Sometimes burst mode can pass protections better.

yes i do - have changed it to normal to test and it worked great. thanx, i'll remember that one if it happens again. there's no indication on the cd or case that its copy protected.

I just bought in Canada and it says on the back that it uses "Copy Control Technology". I haven't tried to rip it yet but when I do tonight I'll let you know how it went.

I just ripped it during lunch. Smooths as butter... I guess they use different copy control technology in Canada...

Not Necessarily, Some CD Roms do not recognize copy protection... It will also help if you have Auto Play deactivated.

The drive has influence of the success of the ripping process too. If you have other drives in your position please try them, and see if they will allow X&Y to be ripped in secure mode.

As said, it's possible that certain CD drives pass some copy protections, it's also possible that some copy protections can be passed only when using the Normal ripping mode. In Secure mode MC tries to reread the "faulty" CD and gets stuck.

If prod's CD really is a standard Red Book Audio CD it is probably defected and should be replaced. Sometimes errors are so small that it's difficult to hear them.

brilliant. better than the first two i reckon, and they were pretty good.

though actually the UK version doesn't have any copy protection...
