« on: July 02, 2005, 03:32:14 am »

Is it possible to play DRM Protected WMA files downloaded from Napster using the Media Server and the DLink DSM-320? They play ok through the MC on my PC.

No, it is not possible (because of the DRM). Playing via a server and playing directly are different from the DRM point of view.

Do you have any plans to add this capability?

We are prohibited from adding this capability. Streaming is not permitted for protected WMA files.

These are files downloaded to my computer, not streamed from the internet. I can play these files through the DSM-320 using Microsoft's Windows Media Connect, but the other functionality of this product is somewhat rudimentary.

Hi Mike,

I wish we could, but we can't. It doesn't matter where the file is (internet or your computer), when it is sent to the DSM320, it's considered streaming and we can't do that.

Now the PlaysForSure site ( http://www.playsforsure.com ) says the DSM-320 is compatible with subscription music (with a firmware upgrade...).

This is from the firmware 1.04 upgrade (1.05 is the latest as of this post):

"Added support for WMDRM. By supporting this, the DSM-320 can now stream protected content from Napster or other online music services using WMDRM. To use this, you need to have Windows Media Connect running at the PC side."
