Joe Karnes - License Problem
« on: July 07, 2005, 10:59:50 pm »

I have Media Center 10 on several of my computers and on 7-4-05 I purchased Media center 11 for $40.00.  I received an email from buy-button@j.river.com thanking me for the purchase and included the Registration Code.  When I checked the Registration Info on my Media Center 11 on 7-4-05 it was registered to me, today on 7-7-05, it indicates an unregistered copy with 24 days left in the trial period.  I had installed a new hard drive on this computer and this was the first time  Media Center 11 was downloaded to it.   Any idea why this would have happened and do I need to use a restore to register again?

As you have replaced your hard drive, your registration info is not yet installed in the new registry on the new hard drive.

Install MC and if you didn't save the install key then you'll have to use another restore (that's what they're there for).

This time, save the key (it's good for 14 days) to another folder and/or a floppy so if you need to do another install (on the same or another computer) you can do so without using another restore. You get 10 restores a year, however, if you should run into some problems, J River will help you out.

BTW: This is the MC 11 bug report board and this is not a bug situation and should have been posted on the general MC board. :)

Thank you Modelmaker for your reply.  I replaced my hard drive a couple of weeks prior to downloading MC11 and so I do consider this to be an MC 11 bug as I had indicated I purchased and my registeration info indicated MC 11 to be registered to me on 7-04-05.  Thank you again, Joe Karnes

(Not to spam this thread, but Jim or someone will be splitting these off anyway in the morning no doubt.  :P)

Your mentioning of a new hard drive makes no sense then.  Why mention it at all?  :P

One can only lose one's license in three ways:  1.)  by reinstalling Windows (as modelmaker said), 2.) by changing the network name of your computer, or 3.) messing with the system clock.  Does any of that apply to you?  If not, then your best and quickest solution is just to use a restore (again, as modelmaker said).  I doubt it's a bug since no one else has ever had this problem without one of the above reasons applying.

Hope this helps!

Having just re-read this, I think you may be confusing Registration Code with Installation Key (restore).

Your registration or purchase code number is good forever and was registered at the time of purchase. It is this code number that is needed to generate   an install key license code, (aka a restore) It is the installation key license code that is good for 2 weeks not your registration.

In other words, it is the license that has to be restored not the registration.

The key code (restore) is needed to unlock MC from the 30-day Trial. Once restored, in Help>Registration Info>Product: it will say: Media Center 11.x.xxx(Registered).

Sorry about the confusion, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Edit: J Karnes PM'd and let me know this was indeed the case and his situation is resolved.
