ape conversion Problem for Philips Streamium with UPnP server
« on: August 07, 2005, 04:26:44 am »

Just got my Philips Streamium SL400i

mp3 Playback works perfect with MC11.0.310/UPnP Server 1.0.34

But I'm not able to get playing my .ape ripped albums.
Every song restarts playing several times for a fraction of a second. Then the next song... and the next...

The options of the UPnP Server are set to:
- Autodetect (same problems when set to Philips Streamium)
- Convert when necessary, mp3 normal

Do I need to click another necessary option within MC11? Any help is appreciated.

My MP3-Encoder under /Tools/Plug-In Manager/ is JRiver, Inc. Version 2.0.80
Converting an .ape album to a disc directory works without any difficulties. The playback of the .ape files and the converted .mp3 files sounds fine too.

Some Philips SL400 product info
(did an internet update, so I guess to have the latest firmware version):
P  Version: 1.5.10
FP Version: 17
BL Version: 10
WL Version: 1.2.8.0

The SL400 is wire connected to a switch (don't use the WLAN at this time)

Hope to provide you with the server messages you asked for:

My BL version is 11 instead of 10, you might try to upgrade again.
Have you tried a lot of different APE files? Is it happening on all, or just some.

Create a couple of copies of a few files, convert the copies to WAV and MP3, then try to play them on the Streamium.

I'm confused because it's working fine for me...

Tried to update again in /System Menu/Online Upgrade/ but got the Message 'already up to date'. The product info is still the same.

Relating to the Streamium Forum 'BL' is the shortcut for Bootloader. Ther seem to be devices around with BL versions 10, 11 and even 12. I wasn't able to find a definition what the differences between the versions are. My sl400 is made for the european market (german language).

As you see in my first post, my computer isn't a powermachine anymore. Could the problems base on some kind of a timing delay due to a long response time of my computer.
I already stopped all my task-list processes lik McAfee, ZoneAlarm, ... but without any success.

.ape files:
I tried it with many different files (>100) of several albums. Never succeded.
But half an hour ago. One track of an album was fully played after several restarts. The next tracks failed again. But no success when I tried to play the album again afterwards.

Thank you

Try converting some to MP3 (make a copy first), and playing those without conversion.
Any luck?

Did as you told me and converted an .ape album into a new folder (conversion mp3 extreme). Imported all tracks into the MC11 library and started the server.

Everything played fine.

Here the server messages for the first couple of tracks:

Tried to play a .wav file and got  the same effects as with the .ape

Looks like an issue with the on the fly conversion to mp3. As I tested before, the conversion to disc (ape to mp3) works well. Are there different decoders/encoders used during on the fly?

No ideas on this one. It is the same converter used (for on the fly, or on-disk or any conversion), so that's not it.

I wonder about speed, but your computer should be fast enough. How long does it take to convert a file?

It's inelegant, but you could run a network sniffer (www.ethereal.com) for the APE playback and the MP3 playback, and look for differences. Especially look at the timings, when the first
packet with audio content is sent compared to when the request was received.

The convertion disk to disk took 2:06
.ape (one file, duration 5:50, Bitrate 766) to .mp3 (target quality extreme)

Made a test today with my notebook computer (same MC version installed, connected to the same switch).
Copied a couple of .ape files from my home pc to the notebook computer, imported the files into the MC library, started the UPnP server, started my streamium and every ape-song played fine. Was great to listen to!

So, the problem sticks really somewhere within my home pc!

Next step will be: dealing with the network sniffer.

Thank's again.

Try a lower setting, see if that makes it better.

Did tests with mp3 VBR encoding normal and even with fix bitrate 32kbps.
Still the same issue, every song restarts several times from the beginning for maybe 2 or 3 seconds.

Will come soon with my network sniffer analysis.

I'm not familiar with network sniffers and network packages but tried to get some information out of the ethereal captures.

I started playback of an ape-album (10 songs) on the Streamium and captured all the network traffic between  my PC and the Philips Streamium. Part of the capture protocol is posted in the follwing post.

What I believe to see:
  • The download (stream) of the first song starts fine, package after package is sent from PC and acknowledged by the Streamium
    i.E. package #244 sent (seq=98550), acknowledge with package #250(
  • The time delay between the packages are similar to the delays during playback of a mp3 song
  • In the packages #262, #263, #264 the Streanium ask for seq=114934. But why in 3 packages.
In the capture protocol of my notebook computer (where the ape playback works) is here a [TCP Window Full] message
  • I see no resend of the missing package
  • With package #265 PC sends seq=114934. Then the stream stops suddenly. But I don't understand the meaning of [RST, ACK]
The full song would go up to seq=9376893
  • I don't know what information is sent in the packages #266 to #279
  • With package #280 playback of the first song starts again

Can you read something out of this capture information. I'm lost.

A RST flag means "abnormally terminate this connection". I'm not sure why the Streamium does it, but it's normal behavior I think. The timings look okay to me, that was the main reason for trying the sniff.

I have no ideas at this point... Have you tried reinstalling?

Did a full uninstall of MC11, rebooted and installed MC11.0.311

Unfortunately the same effects with ape playback.

Could this have something to do with the filename path conversion. Does MC use the library fields in the process? I can see AC/DC mentioned in the logs.

Did you try any tracks that have only basic characters in the tags?

I tried it with many different artists and albums. The AC/DC album plays fine from mp3-files (converted in advance ape to mp3).

The problem occurs during playback with 'on the fly' conversion from lossless files (ape, wav) to the mp3 stream. The mp3 stream quality (kbps) seems to be of no matter.

Any further ideas and tips are very welcome.

As an information:
Converted a couple of .ape Files to .wav (with MC11, disk to disk). The wav-files don't playback with MC11/UPnP-Server.

Installed TwonkyVision Server 2.90. The wav-files playback properly on my Streamium.

But, my music library is mostly ape-files. So TwonkyVision isn't the solution for me.

That was clear to me. I just wanted to make sure that a file named e.g. E:\x\y\z.ape (with equally simple tags) has the same problem when MP3 conversion is enabled.

If I recall correctly there were some strange filename access problems with the Library Server conversions at the alpha stage. (Library Server is the only server I use. Sorry, that I can't be of much help.)

I Did as you suggested. I took an ape-file, gave it a simple filename in a simple directory (c:\work\aaa.ape), cleaned the tags and filled them again with short words without any special characters.
But playback was no success.

A RST flag means "abnormally terminate this connection". I'm not sure why the Streamium does it, but it's normal behavior I think.

Following the sequence of to the Ethereal captions, the PC (i.e. UPnP-Server) stops the stream and not the Philips Streamium device!
Please refer to the captions in my post from 10. August, 20:32
  • in packet #262 the Philips Streamium asks for the next stream-packet (seq=114934)
  • in packet #265 the PC (UPnP-Server) answers with a reset of the streaming-connection

My evaluation of the sequence and the triggered events could be totally wrong.
But please, John G. can you spend another minute on my UPnP-server issue?
I really would appreciate it.

You are correct - the server is resetting the connection. This usually means something strange happened, like the process doing the writing to the TCP connection dies. Check the available disk space on the home PC, kill all running programs and try again, run a virus scanner...

The PC has several GB of free space on every disc and partition.
All security relevant programs are always up to date (McAfee, ZoneAlarmPro, SpyBot, WinXP Updates).

Did as you asked for:
- Virus scanning: nothing found
- SpyBot Search&Destroy: no malware, some cookies deleted
- stopped all running programs: still the same issues

Thought that the problem only exists during playback of lossless files (ape, wav). That was wrong. Whenever conversion is needed (i.e from wma), playback with UPnP-Server to the Streamium fails.
There must be a problem while processing the conversion to mp3.

It works fine on your laptop and elsewhere, so I'm guessing the code is not the problem.
I know you've tried different MP3 options, and that hasn't affected it.
The server is resetting the connection so it's not the Streamium.
No one else has reported this problem.
I'm really stumped.
Can you find a friend who'll loan you a PC for a while? Put it in place of yours, install MC
and see if it happens. This won't show much, but it should prove that the problem
is with your PC and not with the program.

Thank you for your answer John.
I am fully aware that this strange issue is a special (personal) problem of my Home-PC, since my other computers work fine with the UPnP server.

Notheless, to get my Philips Streamium playing my music library, I have to isolate the problem on my PC and after that I will have to find a way to fix the source of error.

The tests brought up some facts (i.e. problem occurs when conversion on the fly becomes active, mp3 files play fine, server resets the connection, ...). It was never my intention to blame MC or the UPnP-server. I believe that there are many other software components  (dll, libraries, api, en-/decoder, drivers) installed by the OS or other programs that support this music conversion process. One of this components seems to be faulty, outdated or corrupted.

What could cause the server to cut the connection after streaming for about 1 second?

You know how your UPnP-server works. I'm lacking this knowledge and so, my only hope are my postings for help.

The only thing that I can think of that would kill the stream after a second is if the encoding process died (via memory fault or similar). But it's not happening for anybody else, and it's too reproducible to be hardware, leaving me with no ideas.

When you reinstalled, did you completely remove MC? Including checking the registry to make sure it was gone?

Is the library on the local machine? Are you using library server by any chance?

Anything else that's different between your laptop and your UPnP server machine?
