CD database support ?
« on: August 26, 2005, 04:20:54 am »

Hello,

I’m planning to archive all my CD collection and I’ve decided to use JRiver Media Center for ripping and encoding into lossless .ape, which I find as the best solution.

Unfortunately the CD-database (YADB) is not very updated and I therefore have to add a lot of data manually. I’ve searched the Internet for a tool to scan barcodes and then I found the product ReaderwareAW. I now got a problem which I hope you can assist me with. I can’t find a way to import data into Media Center from Readerware. One way is to import from the cdplayer.ini file, which needs the CD ID and this is not givenwhen I read the barcode in ReaderwareAW.

Is it a way to import from a database, xml or anything ?

I hope you understand my problem and hopefully have a solution for me.

Kind regards

Welcome to the forum!

MC can export and import its database information in XML format. I think you would need to first rip the unknown CDs with generic filenames like "Artist\Album\01", "Artist\Album\02", etc. Then export the database in XML format, fix the data with external tools and and import to MC again. That is not a very simple task unless you can find a tool that can merge the data automatically.

I have used the cplayer.ini file for importing information from the freedb and Gracenote databases besides YADB. In this thread I explained how: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=29099.0.

After getting the info to MC I have exported it to YADB so other MC users can benefit from the work I have done (MC Tree > Drives & Devices > Right-click the CD icon > Submit to CD Database).

Some tools like Tag&Rename can download CD info from freedb and fill the file tags after the tracks are ripped with MC. MC has a tool for updating its database from the physical file tags.

BTW, remember to use the secure mode and rip logging in MC. Check these threads:

I will try this and as another person mentioned, why not get this as a plug-in ?

I've tried to rip in MusicMatch before and there I could get nearly every CD information I needed. What database does MM use ? Is it a way to also connect  to their database and import it to the cdplayer.ini file ?
The bad thing with MM is that it's not possible to rip with the monkey endoder and that's why I decided to use Media Center which I find to be a fantastic product except the YADB...

I think MM uses Gracenote. The Player program will download that info for you. It has a menu item for saving the data to the cdplayer.ini file.

YADB will become better if we just remember to contribute whenever possible.

For me it is not big problem because I have already ripped the bulk of my old CDs and I'm comfortable with using various tools for getting the results I want.

Is it possible to make a plug-in to the ReaderwareAW application ? I find this product amazing. It's just to scan the barcode and then you get all the infomation you need in a database. It's also possible to export the data to an XML-file. Of course I would pay for this plug-in as the Readerware product costs $40.

If I use export/import with XML, what data do I have to export from ReaderWare and what field order, to get MediaCenter work fine during the import ?

The plug-ins and XML are not exactly my field of expertise. I hope someone else can answer to this.

Thanks Alex B for your tips about the application Player in one of the links you mentioned:

Here is the Player link: http://www.vuplayer.com/player.php

The Player and the connection to CDDB works in 100 % so far ! It also updates the cdplayer.ini file automatic when choosing that alternative.

I will of course update the YADB with my CD information.

From now on I will make the ripping in these steps:

  • Bring a pack of CDs and let Player automatically update the cdplayer.ini file with information from CDDB for each CD
  • From Media Center I will then update each CD from cdplayer.ini (Is it a way to have this done automatically, not have to right click and choose "update from cdplayer.ini" ? I have disabled the option "Enable online CD lookup" in MC)
  • For every CD I will submit track info to YADB (most possible with some duplicates, sorry for this... )
  • I then rip each CD in the Audio Monkey's lossless format

By this I will get consistent data when updating all CD information from only one DB and in this case Gracenotes CDDB which I find outstanding.

I´ve really appreciated your help, best Regards
