MC not working - caused by Tivo change?
« on: September 13, 2005, 12:28:18 pm »

I wonder if Tivo broke their home networking support in some way. Yesterday a new message appeared on the Tivo display - "Enable/disable home networking applications." It brings up a message about potential privacy problems; the default was to disable "home networking applications."

And now the Tivo can't find MC, regardless of whether I choose Enable or Disable. I've reset the Tivo and played with its menus. The MC Tivo log shows no inquiry whatever - completely empty since the last time I used it before something happened.

FWIW, the software version on the Tivo today is 7.2.0-oth-01-2-540. I don't know if that's different than yesterday, but I assume it must be.

Anybody else?

Looking into online Tivo forums makes me wonder if I got the 7.2 "upgrade" that appears to be causing no end of grief. I'm following the suggestion in one thread to go to tivo.com "manage my account" and activate "allow transfers," then force a connection thru the Tivo to Tivo Central so the unit picks up that setting. The other suggestion is to shut down and restart everything, which I'll be doing as well. I'll report back, but perhaps not until tonight. Thanks!

The Tivo is basically - but not completely - out of touch with MC.

I updated the Tivo with new settings for "transfers" - theoretically irrelevant, since that permits transfers FROM the Tivo to other devices. I restarted the Tivo, restarted the computer running MC. The Tivo immediately saw MC and played music.

I stopped, watched television - and when I tried again, nothing would make the Tivo see MC. And MC doesn't reflect any inquiries from the Tivo while I was trying.

I'll experiment to see if restarting one or the other restores the connection again, but of course that's not a usable solution.

Here's the log from the time it was up and running. The interesting thing is the absence of anything else following, despite pounding back and forth on the Music & Photos entry on the Tivo screens . . .

[This became a short-term problem when I found that the price on the Streamium S400i has dropped to $199 when ordered direct from Phillips. In a few days I'll switch to wrestling with UPNP again instead of with the Tivo . . .]

Are you sure about the firmware version? My TiVo is 7.2.0-oth-01-2-140
(the last three digits are 140 instead of 540, I'm curious if the 5 is a typo).

I'm having no problems with mine (in fact, they seem to have fixed a long standing bug where it would fail to find MC on occasion).

I can't find any settings about home networks, where are they?

Enjoy the streamium...

Yup, the firmware is -540.

The main Tivo screen now displays "Music, Photos & More" - that's a change from "Music & Photos," I think.

The top entry on the "Music, Photos & More" screen is the server static IP address that never resolves. The bottom entry is, "Disable Home Network Applications." It toggles between enable/disable based on the next screen, which has some text and a thumbs up or thumbs down sequence.

That screen points to www.tivo.com/pcprivacy, which has an ominous sentence: "TiVo does not permit home network applications to be discovered on TiVo DVRs unless the subscriber actively enables the discovery feature. For subscriber convenience, TiVo also identifies these unverified applications with a computer icon on the TiVo menu."

Just to make sure, I hooked up my Netgear MP101 on the same cable as the Tivo, and it sprang to life with MC immediately.

Interesting, eh? I experimented a bit more and still can't make MC and the Tivo react to each other at all. The 7.2 rollout is apparently brand new and a fair number of people are venting out loud about problems. I'm not going to install Tivo Desktop software or try to move video around, so this is the only side effect I'll notice . . .

After working yesterday it stopped working today :(

Something strange is going on. It's not trying to connect to the TiVo Beacon, it's trying to connect on port 80, I'm not sure why. This could be a bug in the 7.2 software, like you've suggested. I'll check into this more today, see if I can find anything...

I think the home network applications are different than the music/photos. I think they are apps that can feed weather or news or stuff like that.

[added later]
The reason I think this is because I see a different server (mac) that is showing up fine, even though the HNAs are disable. Hmmm... maybe a good place to start.

You're right about the "home network applications." Here's the only explanation I could find online: http://www.zatznotfunny.com/hme.htm

I experimented with disabling the "home network applications" and restarting the Tivo. I got the same result as with them enabled - the Tivo saw MC on port 8070 after a restart, but only once - and never again after I used the Tivo to watch a show.

I guess I'm glad yours failed too - it's always nice to rule out user error. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. I'm off to UPNP land . . .

Just got back into town and loaded .316, and the Tivo came right back to life and connected to MC without any hesitation. You guys are very good at this.

Then I hooked up the Streamium, which also immediately found MC and has some advantages that will keep me using it instead of Tivo. Wanna know the one that matters the most in our family? After the Tivo finishes an album or playlist, after ten or fifteen minutes it goes back to live TV. Each time the sound of live TV has unexpectedly filled the living room, my wife has jumped a foot and looked at me with the kind of look that means I'd better figure out a different way to handle some aspect of our home technology.

Thanks!
