Real Player Content
« on: September 28, 2002, 11:43:26 am »

When I tried to play a real stream in MJ it said I needed to download Real Player so as much as I hate Real I dled the latest version of Real only to have MJ still saying I do not have it installed.  What gives? I have Real One V2 installed and running which is what MJ linked me to when I clicked the dl button...

Any help appreciated,

Adam

The RealPlayer One v2 is apparently incompatible with the previous releases.  Best to uninstall it now.

This will work:

Please do not install RealPlayer One v2.  It prevents Media Jukebox from working with it.

Download Real Player 8.0 from:
http://proforma.real.com/real/player/blackjack.html

or

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/realp8.exe

We recommend that you disable the "Active Startcenter" in Real Player.  It's under View/Preferences/Startcenter/settings.

We have discovered something unpleasant about RealOne Version 2.  It has added "protection" that prevents any other application except the browser from using the Real Playback Engine.

We think we have a solution for this but it will take a week or two.

------------------------
Here's the detail (thanks to Matt and Nikolay):

Real's scheme will shut down everyone that uses their control like we do.

How it works:

Each second, Real's player component scans a hard-coded list of file types (mp3, ogg, m3u and even JRiver specific types like m01 and mjp) and looks at the program associated with each.  If it detects that the program using their player component is associated with any of the file types, it stops working.  It even goes so far as to stop any program in the same directory, so no program in "C:\Program Files\J River\Media Jukebox" can use their player component.

I would think you can fool Real into thinking that MJ is the Browser and then play the files.

Maybe

Thanks for the reply Jim.  Thats some nasty tactics on their part!!  Surely they are not allowed to consider your specific file types in their list anyway...

I would not use real at all if some sites didn't still insist on using real streams.  I prefer WMA streams as they seem to be better quality most of the time.

Thanks again

A new version of MJ is available and should fix the problem with the latest version of RealOne (v2).

We'll keep a closer eye on Real now.
