ID3v2 TIT3 (Subtitle) tag missing!
« on: October 01, 2005, 07:34:59 pm »

Looking for a Classical Music friendly program (a rare thing) I came to MediaCenter; it's one of the best on that, supports a wealth of tags but, surprisingly, not TIT3 (Subtitle).

Subtitle is a blessing for the organization of a classical library because the typical classical work is subdivided in a number of parts called movements.
The ideal way to tag a three movement work like Debussy's La mer would be:

Composer "TCOM" - Debussy Common to all three tracks
Title (MC calls it Name) "TIT2" - La mer Common to all three tracks
Subtitle "TIT3" - I. De l'aube à midi sur la mer First track
Subtitle "TIT3" - II. Jeux de vagues Second track
Subtitle "TIT3" - III. Dialogue du vent et de la mer Third track

Is there a chance that MC will also support ID3v2 TIT3 (subtitle)?
Also useful, but perhaps not as important would be support for TPE3 (Conductor) and TPE2 (Band), this last useful for naming an orchestra, leaving TPE1 (Artist) for soloists.

Did you try adding custom fields with these names?

I'm afraid custom tagging shouldn't be the best way to cope with the problem... it is just a way of circumventing a shortcoming of the software.
Think about "interoperability", for instance.
Sources of commercial music would tag their files correctly (that is, according to the standard tags) if enough software (players, library managers) supported them.
In fact, I note that classical music I bought from emusic.com comes correctly tagged for Composer; however, as they know most software ignore that tag, Composer info is repeated in the Artist tag (as for the missing artist information: well, it appears in the folder that contains the music movements).
Abiding to the standards, that is, allowing users to deal with ID3v2 tags as they were designed to would make library information more consistent and reliable.

As for now, among well known software that classical lovers can use:
MediaPlayer10 supports Composer, Subtitle and Conductor (not Band)
MediaCenter11 supports Composer (not Subtitle, Conductor or Band) and feature richer.
If MC at least matched MediaPlayer in tag support I think that (to my knowledge) it would go straight to the top of the list, besides contributing to the correct use of ID3v2 tags.

MC does support the 'band' tag, it isn't shown by default though. Have you tried making custom fields and assigning the official name to 'name' and whatever you want to have a displayed as in 'display' and set it to store in tag? Then updates files from tag. It might work.

I have the same problem with publisher (label) supported by Tag&Rename not by MC. The problem with the custom fields is they can't be used by other programs.

The problem with the custom fields is they can't be used by other programs.

What??? Are there other programs?    ;D

Here is how I have organized my visible tags:

Click to see the full size image.

I scrolled the view horizontally between the screenshot slices.

Some of the fields are linked with ID3V2 tags, some are not. Since MC is my main organizer it is enough for me that the basic fields are universally the same. Anyway, the ID3v2 standard is used only with MP3 files. MC supports many file and tagging formats. Some formats cannot contain physical tags at all.

I have posted some ID3v2 tagging comments in these threads:

No doubt that Alex B nicely coped with MC11 limitations, but...

Subtitle support is THE way to cope with movements, because
instead of congesting the Title (name) tag with music name + movement name,
with Subtitle support
- just the music name would appear in the Title (Name) tag;
- each movement name would appear in the Subtitle tag.
I think no one would disagree with that!

In any case, supporting a standard tag shouldn't be that difficult for the programmers...

Please try adding a tag with that name.  It will probably show up in MC then.

Hello Jim H!

I posted a similar wish for MC12 here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28958.150

Would you say that this is never going to happen in MC?

I too would also like to see full support for ID3v2, however things go very quiet whenever it's mentioned.

Like many standards, ID3V2 implementations have considerable variation.

Surely Qwert73's suggestion http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=28958.150 - of being able to map Library fields to standard ID3V2 frames  could have some merit and be seen as a compromise perhaps?
