Skipping with MC11.1
« on: October 22, 2005, 10:45:52 pm »

With almost any decent level of disk activity I get terrible skipping from MP3 files.
Don't get the same with other players so I'm thinking it is not the system/drivers/files.

We know there is a problem.  Are you using G-Force?

Or any other third party plug-ins?

Same problem with skipping here also, even when navigating tree views.

I have the same problem, but find it definitely happens more frequently when I'm using the Multiinfo track info display plugin. I'm not using G-force.

I am also seeing skipping in my muisc and Video.  I am currently using a 30 day evaluation copy.  I must say I am amazed at this product and I plan on purchasing this when  I see that the skipping has been taken care of.  I thought I would provide some further detail as to what I am seeing from my system.

I am noticing my skipping on music as well as DVD when certain applications are running.  I use Trillian and every time a message comes from Yahoo I get a skip.  When I launch Yahoo! the actual messenger program, I am not getting the skipping.

The other thing I am noticing is that when I look at digital pictures in Media Center it seems to take an increadibly long time to display them.   I would call it barely functional in terms of looking at images because of this.

I am not getting the skiping in Winamp for music playback when using trillian.  I haven't tried the DVD in another program in the last few days.  I do know that it was working well within the last few weeks with these same applications running.

I am running a  Dell Inspiron 8600 1.4 Pentium M.  I have Windows XP Pro SP 2.  I run with Avast anti Virus and Zone Alarm.

My last two comments are a bit of a pet peave.
1.  Please don't open Internet Explorer when I chose to purchase your product its bad form to call another browser but my default in your code.
2.  Please change the name of the link... Help>Interact.  That was not very clear to me that it was a link to your forums.  It was by accident that I was able to find it.  Maybe Help>Forums.

Anyway.  I love what I see here.  I will hold off on my financial support until the skipping gets resolved.

You might want to use 11.0 to see if it works for you.

Digital image displays... how long do they take?  Are they stored on a network drive.

Thanks for the clues about IM and skipping.  We know there is a problem, but we don't see it here so it's hard to find.  It's possible that it's something like antivirus software.

I am using the 11 Alpha that I downloaded this morning from Beta News.  I upgraded thinking that might help.  But it didn't.

The images are on my local drive C:  Nothing special about them.  Just normal jpgs from a digital camera and stuff I have downloaded from the web.

It takes 3 to 4 seconds to display.  When I move down a page it takes the 3 or 4 seconds to display the images instead of the icons.

I hope that helps.  I will check back in a few if you have any other questions I can answer.

The first time through, MC will need to build thumbnails.  It will get faster once all the thumbnails are built.

I thought I would help out since I like this program.   :)

I loaded the 30 day copy on my Desktop.  An Athlon 64 3000+ Machine with 1gb of Ram.  I am running basically the same software.  Trillian.  Zone Alarm and Avast Anti Virus.

I am not getting the skipping when I try to use Yahoo via Trillian on that machine.  Its as smooth as silk.

Yes the laptop is a lesser machine.  Yet, it should still have plenty of go to run this app.  I hope the additional info helps.

P.S. the pictures are loading faster now that the thumbs are created.  Thanks

Mercury--
The version that you're using is Alpha software.  That isn't a fair test of MC.  If / when you get to the point that you feel confident of MC as an app  and just want it to be stable, uninstall the 11.1 alpha and install 11.0.316.  Note that you will have to uninstall the alpha.

We have found a way to reproduce skipping so it should get fixed in the next few days.

If anyone else wants to try to reproduce it, I get it when I take another window and move it around rapidly, over MC.

I actually love what I am seeing.  Alpha or not.  I have worked in software development and I hope I wasn't passing judgement.  I was trying to be helpfull.

Once this is resolved I will be dropping Winamp in favor of your clearly superior product.

Thanks again.

In the meanwhile you really should try the last 11.0 version. At this stage 11.1 alpha has nothing special to offer for a newbie. MC11 was launched last summer and it looks and feels about the same as 11.1a (for now). You don't have to struggle with possible bugs caused by new unfinished features. I have found only a couple of minor bugs in the v. 11.0.316.

MC 11.0 doesn't have this skipping problem, so the time to drop Winamp might be now.  ;)

Though, I don't know what happens to your ongoing try out period. As far as I know the v. 11.1a should be uninstalled with the "Remove registry entries" option enabled because the registry keys are not compatible. Any information on this, JRiver? Will the try out period continue?

I on the other hand have not been able to narrow it down to any one certain act or process. Ive moved windows around on top of MC and that produced nothing. My skips are intermittent and seemingly random. We all know that they, of course, are not random, but they seem that way.

Just a heads up that MC 11.1.43 fixes this issue.

There were some improvements in our underlying threading engine for MC 11.1.  However, a bug crept in causing higher thread priorities to not get assigned to some threads in the player core.

Sorry for the hassles.

Thanks!

All is well as for the skipping.
Played a couple of heavy-duty games while playing tunes.

No problems.
