Newbie "Import media" problem..
« on: October 29, 2005, 10:34:55 am »

Hi all..!

There's surely an easy answer to this question, but I've searched and looked at the faq's..

Anyway, I rip all my cd's to APE format, works perfect and I have stored about 1000 cd's on my harddrives so far. All perfectly indexed under artist, album and trackname.

But the problem is when I try to import APE and FLAC-files from other sources, internet, friends etc.. Even though they are stored with Artist/Album/Track, Mediacenter refuses to import them into the library..I have to manually select the tracks, rightclick and then "import into library"..then they show up as they should. But only until next time I do a "Import media", then I have to go through this manual procedure again..takes a lot of time..
Why..I thought it was enough to have the files saved in folders with artist-album-trackname..?!?

Should I put on my stupid hat now.. :)

If you're having difficulty importing songs you're getting from "friends, etc", the RIAA has a complaint department set up just for that.  Call their office on monday and leave your name and number, along with a short message describing the trouble you're having getting your friend's songs to play, and someone will get back to you soon.

Really..? They can help me with that..?? Thank you.. ::)

Seriously, there is music around that's neither copywrited or illegal..perhaps you didn't know that..?

So, when trying to import my (non-copywrited, ofcourse) material, stored like "Retro/My Greatest hits/wiseguy.flac", I have the problem described in my first post..

Clearer now..?

Clearer now..?

For example, http://www.archive.org/audio/etree.php offers currently 27,960 legal and free live shows in a lossless format.

In regard to your problem, I think you should provide more details. What import settings you used exactly? (I assume you used the Import Media tool in the File>Library menu. MC doesn't have an auto-import function. Though, I think KingSparta has made a plug-in for that too.) You should also post your system info from the Help menu.

I found a lot of great music at etree.org, but I haven't found any friends there.  The procedure I outlined above was for music from "friends, etc".

Retro, have a look at the import menu, just to verify that FLAC is enabled.  Also, what is the extension of the friendly files-- .flac or .fla?  I believe older systems will truncate the extension, and maybe your friends' computers need upgrading.

Failing all else, this sounds like an UNCONFIRMED bug reported about six months back.  Out of the tens of millions of MC users only one reported it.  Now that I think of it, maybe it was your friend.

At any rate, since then the entire FLAC decoding and encoding process has been upgraded, a huge undertaking for which jriver spared no expense (although kudos are due to ghammer for spearheading the effort).  So I doubt that the two are related.

Maybe Alex B has some further info on this, although I think he's finnished.

Alex B, thanks for responding.

Yes, I use the Import Media tool in the File>Library menu. I've tried the various settings available there, otherwise, I use the default settings.
As I wrote, rightclicking on new songs and "import into library" works, but it isn't stored when I do a full Import Media.

Do I need a plug-in..?

Here's a copy of my system info.

Retro--
Glad to hear you're up and running from the authorities.  MC has an awesome number of features, but occassionally the settings can be daunting.  As for that hat you mentioned in your original post, I've got one myself which I always keep handy, since I never know when I'm going to need it next.

LMAO  ;D

MC12 Request
Next to Audio/Images/Video we'd like a friend section.
In the event that no friends are present MC should be able to
go away and find available friends and install them on the system.
