Library Server - Client can't play songs
« on: November 17, 2005, 09:45:32 pm »

Using 1.1.56

I have a server in the basement runing the same version as my upstairs client.  The client can find the media server and display the library; however, when I try and play a song I get...

"media center encountered errors while trying to play the last several files.  Please make sure that the path in your media library points to the right location."

?

Debug looks like this on the client

Are you sure the songs can play? Try playing them on the server.

Yep, no problem on the server.  I also deleted the library and rebuilt it, still no client play.

Still no client connection  ?

The file names look like this...

m01p://192.168.0.2:8181/M:\My Music\Various Artists\Disco\Rock_The_Casbah_Ultimix_-_The_Clash.mp3

Is this normal?

What are your encoding options on the client? Try always converting to ogg and see if that changes anything. (Tools -> Options -> Library -> Convert Audio if Necessary -> Ogg Vorbis). I'm suggesting this because I get the same error when I don't have an mp3 encoder installed (and I think it's set to convert to mp3 by default).  I'm certainly not an expert, but I use the Library Server daily on a number of machines and have seen just about every error it can throw at you. This is the most common "d'oh!" mistake I make when I set it up on a fresh system.

That worked!!!  It feels like my birthday... wait.. it really is :)

I'm not really sure how this conversion thing works.  I can play local mp3's fine, and when I look at the mp3 encoder settings, I see it as JRiver with a version number, so something must be installed.  I just changed it to not convert at all, this works also.

Any idea how to fix the "convert when necessary" setting w/ mp3 selected?

Thanks again!

I can't reproduce this at all.

On the server machine, choose a non mp3 file and convert it to mp3, does that work? (The mp3 encoder on the client is not used, the conversion happens on the server).

I have the exact same problem now that I coverted to 11.1.65 Alpha. Telling it never to convert solved the symptoms for me as well. When I did as John Gateley asked, it turned out I didn't have the mp3 encoder installed. After I installed it, I was able to set it back to "convert when nessecary" without any problems.

But I guess that's what Tyler was trying to tell us.  :)

The next build will have the MP3 encoder downloaded without asking when it is needed, hopefully that will resolve the problems seen here.
