iRiver H10 Support?
« on: November 29, 2005, 04:41:50 pm »

Are there any plans to include support for "Music Mode" on the H10?

Can you elaborate on what 'Music Mode' is/does?

Thanks.

Music Mode allows browsing based on information taken from the ID tags and held in the device's database - you have the option of browsing by genre, album, artist etc.

Could you send me a sample database file from the device?

I'll try, but in the meantime here's the db spec - http://www.misticriver.net/wiki/index.php/H10_Database_Specification

Ian,

Thanks. That tells me much more likely than not what I need to know. I presume that if you rename or delete this file on your H10 then music mode functionality goes away but returns if you put the file back in place. Assuming this, we will need to write specialized code to enable this mode for the H10 and have not done so yet. It is not planned in the immediate short term, but is something we could do.

I don't know for sure, but I think it's as simple as that  - if the db's there then Music Mode works - if it isn't, it doesn't!  There's an OpenSource project called EasyH10 that can create the db after scanning the H10's disk.  I tried it after synching with MC and it worked fine.  Maybe a more general solution would be to allow MC to run a command line app after it's finished synching?  EasyH10 has a cl interface and there may well be other similar apps for other devices (maybe!).

Oh, and as another thread has mentioned, the H10 has it's own playlist structure - it would be nice if that was supported too.

Media Center uses WMDM to talk to the H10, so metadata should work as expected.  I've used an H10 with MC before for my car before, and I could browse artists, albums, playlists, etc.

Make sure you have the latest MTP driver loaded.

(let me know if we're missing something obvious)

There are two versions of the H10; MTP and UMS.  I think the MTP version is only available in the US - I'm in the UK and have the UMS version.  Judging by the number of posts on the H10 forum asking how to install the UMS firmware on an MTP device, UMS is the more popular.  One reason is that people don't like being forced to use WMP10 - maybe there's an opportunity there?

Well, MC has great support if you use the MTP version.

Any chance you could flash your UMS to MTP?

Wot, no smiley!  :D  I don't even know if it's possible, but not a chance - I don't know what it would do to the warranty, the device will be used as a portable disk for data files, and it'll be used at friends' houses - no idea what OS / apps will be installed.
