Media Center 11.1.78 Beta
« on: December 10, 2005, 02:19:02 pm »

This is a beta version of MC 11.1.  It will work with the same MC11 license that 11.0 uses.  Please post only bugs here.  Anything requiring discussion should go in a new thread.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

PRICES for MC11.0 and 11.1 are here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

The public release version of Media Center 11.0 is available here:
http://www.jrmediacenter.com/download.html (recommended for new users)

This latest build of MC11.1 Beta is here:
[ build pulled by JimH for tagging problems in Playing Now ]
11.1.78 (12/10/05)

1. NEW: New thumbnail storage and loading engine that is often 100 or more times faster. (ex. loading 100,000 thumbs after reboot took over 2 minutes before, now takes less than a second) (also uses less memory than before with no change in thumbnail quality).  Requires one-time rebuild of thumbnails.
2. Optimized: Standard (non-tile) lists that show thumbnails draw over twice as fast.
3. Fixed: Not all images would properly cycle through during a mouse-over slideshow in a library tile.
4. Fixed: Library browser style lists wouldn't redraw properly when scrolling with the keyboard.
5. Changed: Updated Theater View to use the same (more efficient) thumbnail system as standard view.

11.1.77 (12/9/05)

1. Changed: "Files" now the first button in the button row of library views.
2. Optimized: Some optimizations to JPEG / thumbnail loading engine.
3. Optimized: Library browser style views now build missing thumbnails in background threads and update after they're built.
4. Optimized: Library browser style views operate many times faster. (scrolling, selection, etc.)
5. Optimized: Added a thumbnail caching layer that improves performance in all views with thumbnails. (library, image lists, Theater View, etc.)
6. Optimized: MC does more aggressive memory flushing on minimize to be as light-weight as possible when playing in the background.
7. Optimized: Improved data path for thumbnail drawing in image style lists, increasing overall drawing performance.
8. Changed: Reworked thumbnail storage format to provide sharp images with less memory usage and greater speed. (sorry, thumbnails will need to be rebuilt)
9. Fixed: TV would crash trying to write files to non-existent folder during recording or time-shifting.
10. Fixed: m4a files could not be converted to other format.
11. Optimized: Media Center does a better job of pre-buffering images at an image view -- reducing thumbnail scrolling lag during scrolls.

11.1.76 (12/9/05)

1. NEW: Library views allow graphical album, artist, etc. lists to be shown at the same time as file lists.
2. Changed: Further tuning of library view navigation.
3. Fixed: When starting a fullscreen video / slideshow from a library browser tile, the focus wouldn't shift to the display. (so shortcuts, etc. wouldn't work as expected)
4. Fixed: Seeking is now disabled on music from Library Server when it is converted on the fly.
5. Fixed: Library Browser views weren't supporting typed-navigation properly.
6. Changed: Removed status line from Library Browser views. (animated status may appear in general status bar someday)
7. Changed: Starting an image slideshow from a Library Browser wouldn't automatically start the slideshow.
8. Changed: Made bi-directional links and alphabet options in library browser views. (look at view link in top right)
9. Changed: Library browser tiles with too many links use a drop list instead of trying to show all the links.
10. Fixed: Library Browser tile views didn't support double-click.
11. Changed: Library browser views use a more useful placeholder image for items with no artwork.
12. NEW: UPnP Server reports the port it is using.

11.1.75 (12/8/05)

1. Changed: No image thumbnail no longer drawn as large in library browser style pages.
2. Changed: Removed plurals from library browser links and buttons.
3. Changed: Removed underlines on library browser links. (only underlines on mouse over)
4. Changed: Reduced bordering on library browser style pages.
5. Changed: Revised default view schemes. (available from Edit > Reset All View Schemes To Default)
6. Fixed: VOB files were using the wrong name with UPnP Server.
7. Fixed: VOB files had the wrong mime type with UPnP Server.
8. Fixed: Using library server and converting on the fly would truncate some files.
9. Changed: MC will no longer use QuickTime to analyze m4a files.
10. Fixed: MC would not import m4a files with UNICODE characters in the path.
11. Changed: Library browser views use standard typed navigation. (instead of automatic quick search like other views)
12. Changed: Revamped Media Library navigation system to show a full history.
13. Changed: Selecting multiple library browser items and picking "Play" plays all the selected items instead of just the one with the link.
14. Fixed: Podcast configuration was not cloned when you cloned a library.

11.1.74 (12/7/05)

1. NEW: Merged Media Library and Library Browser into one system.
2. Changed: Removed the "Documents" media mode.
3. Changed: Moved "Audio", "Images", and "Video" to the root of the tree. (more like Theater View)
4. Changed: Added "Reset All View Schemes To Default" to the Edit menu.
5. Changed: Tagging with the panes will only ask for confirmation on drop. (not on edit or tagging mode check)
6. Changed: "Album Artist" and "Album Artist (auto)" show as simply "Artist" in view scheme displays.
7. Fixed: Analyzing of AAC/m4a file stopped at 99%-100% and did not continue to the next file.

New Features in MC 11.1
Podcasting support
Much improved handheld support for iPod, PlayforSure devices, and many others
Configurable locations for all media types on handhelds
iPod Shuffle and Nano support
Album art on iPods that support it
Automatic backup of library
Directshow support for AAC files
Much faster handling of thumbnail images (requires one-time rebuild of thumbnails)

I'm not sure why someone on the .77 thread said the next build would help, maybe they were just guessing - I realise the change list gives no reason to believe this changed in .78

Fields with semicolon delimited values are displaying the same song multiple times in the bottom files view after drilling down through the library browser.

Working OK here.  Is the server running 11.1.78 also?

I think a got a bug:
Use the new Media Browser and select the Genres button.
Select a Genre and click on the 'play'-option.
Then stop the player.
If you start the player again it plays the whole library.

Yep, client and server are both running .78.

The server isn't showing a request to play the file in the log though.

I am running on a different port, if that makes a difference.

1. Can't customize current view of the new file list pane. You can add or remove columnsin the editor but nothing changes when you apply or exit.

2. When you mouse over the tiles they cycle through the pictures of album, artist, etc. by adding a new pic to each cycle instead of cycling through from A to Z it does A, A>B, A>B>C, A>B>C>D    ...basically starting over each time instead of cycling through.

I've had this problem with the last couple of betas, I think I first noticed with 11.1.75, but someone else had posted about this, back to 11.1.72, I think, and I am still getting this with 11.1.78.

Cover Art is not being displayed with Visualizations done with Visualization  Studio.

I have my covert art as folder.jpg in the album directory and I have the image field set to COVER_ART in vis. studio, has this changed?

The cover art shows up ok in the 3D visualizations, cover art and track info choices, just not in the ones from visualization studio.

Customizing the graphical album view and changing it to "Details" does nothing. I'm still presented with the thumnails of the cover art. Is this a bug or a design (hopefully this is NOT by design).

Try different settings, like with and without conversion, and using different codecs for the conversion. Let me know what works and what doesn't. I changed some things recently, so something may have slipped through.

Curious: when first trying to connect from a client (with the default from installation setting of "convert if necessary" to MP3), I get the same error regardless of file type (except mp4, which I gather gets passed raw regardless of the conversion setting). If I change the setting to either "Don't Convert" or "Always Convert", then everything works fine. Changing back to "convert when necessary" works fine also! Stopping and restarting either the client or the server cannot reproduce the original error; you must remove and reinstall the client to reproduce the error.

OK, yep, changing the "Convert audio" settings on the client gets it able to play the content again.

As djp said, once you've changed the setting, you can change it back and it will still work - I guess that means there's something missing from the settings post-install until you specifically go in and change them.

Synchronzation with Nomad Jukebox 3 has problems:

- Playlists are not synchronized, meaning the songs are synchronized, but the playlists are not created.
- The transfer seems pretty slow. It is below 1 MB/s, while when doing it with 11.0 it goes at around 4MB/s.
- When the sychronization starts, I get prompted that the songs already exists. Of course they do, so it should just not add them anymore. 11.0 is doing that correctly.

Let me know if you need the log file.

I seem to have been bit with a nasty bug as of my upgrade to 11.1.78.  Specifically it appears to be some kind of race condition.  It is triggered when I have a setting other than "source number of channels" in the DSP studio.  Before the upgrade, I was able to leave it at this setting with no issues.  The problem is triggered regardless of whether I use Wave Audio, DirectSound, or ASIO.  Here's the relevant system configuration:

Windows XP SP2 (ia32)
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi (driver 5.12.2.1143)
    Hardware Accelleration set to Full
Sample Rate Converstion Quality set to Best

As per usual advice I have rebooted, just to be certain.

The cover art shows up ok in the 3D visualizations, cover art and track info choices, just not in the ones from visualization studio.

Valerie

I have the same problem and have my images stored inside the file.  I am using Clean-n-Tidy.

Ripping bug is back
« Reply #21 on: December 11, 2005, 10:06:38 am »

Looks like the bug where you can't consecutively rip disks might have bleed through to 78. I can only rip one disk, then have to completely close the rip dialog and start over before it will rip again. Also, auto-rip does not initate.

Currently using only one CD drive.

When I insert another CD after the first, it does not continue ripping.  If I click on 'Click Here to Restart Ripping' I get an error message that says "There are no tracks available to rip.  Please ensure an audio CD is in the drive and that tracks are selected."  I click "OK" but that error keeps popping up until I close the Rip CD Action Window.

I loaded .77 since .78 was pulled.
"customize current view", add and remove items in the "items to show" settings.
No change is shown in the detailed view.  Still see the filename field that I removed and don't see the other fields I want displayed.

This is when I have the Genres Albums or Artists buttons pressed.
It changes and displays my customized view only if I select the Files button.

I have a problem importing m4p files from the Windows Explorer. The first file works, but when I then try to import another, Explorer is stopped and I have to restart Windows to make the next import possible. At one occasion it was enough to restart MC and open Explorer again to import a second file, but I never managed to do that again.

File lock errors when rating songs or analyzing audio.
bottom of window states it's waiting to write tags.
When I exit MC, popup window comes up and says tags couldn't be saved due to files being read only or locked.

When analyzing audio on a bunch of wma files downloaded from Rhapsody, occasionally I'll run into one that was available for download when I downloaded it, but is no longer available (for whatever reason).  When Audio Analysis tries to analyze one of these file, it hangs for a bit, then opens a blank window that I assume is trying to tell me that it was unable to retrieve a license to play the file.  I have to hit cancel to Continue.  Obviously, I'd prefer if it just skipped the file during Audio Analysis, so I don't have to babysit it...

In a perfect world, you'd have access to browsing their full library and be able to use their new Rhapsody Music Engine plugin to play the music, so I don't have to use the buggy Rhapsody 3.0 client anymore... :)

Same problems of locked files (mp3 audio):  once a playing file, MC does not unlock it, reason why it gives to error when tags editing.

File Lock is NOT released
« Reply #27 on: December 11, 2005, 04:24:54 pm »

File Lock is NOT released

When you play a Song
Then Stop, and Edit the Tag Info  ex: Rating, Artist,
or
Change the Lib info w/ Rename file to Tag info etc.

The Tag info is not updated since the File is still LOCKED by the last play

You have to reboot to remove the LOCK status on the file
No Tags are saved.
If you wait long enough you get a Error message saying it can not writ the tags

Also at the bottom of teh window you can see xxxx - tags waiting to be saved.

just to annoy everybody...... MC doesn't unlock the files after it plays them!

but seriously, it doesnt.  ive always wondered why mc does this in the first place.  it seems to be unique to MC.

Using folder.jpg for cover art.
Initialized and sync'd ipod photo a few days ago.  1200 songs showed cover art properly.
Imported a few new albums today.  All correctly had folder.jpg art assigned to every song.
New songs added to smartlist based on smartlist criteria.
Smartlist sync'd to ipod.
Songs transferred ok, but there's no art for the newly sync'd songs.
No square, no MC logo, and no left justification of the text.
Display on ipod looks just like it did when cover art wasn't supported.

Reinitializing and resyncing ipod clears it up, but there's an issue with the art database when syncing new stuff.

actually this locked file thing.... i think i figured it out.  if i were coding this, i might have made the mistake of deleting/commenting out an if/then statement (or loop or whatever u guys use for this particular feature) to tell whether it's unlocked or not.  therefore, even though the program has unlocked it, the user doesn't know, and the rest of the program doesn't know..... yeh.... or else i just wanted to sound smart ;).

I copy my library directory from my management/ripping PC to my HTPC each night, since all my files are on a network drive X: this has been working fine.

With the changes to the thumbnail system, all my thumbnails on the HTPC are now blank after the copy.

Is there a file(s) a have to exclude from the copy?  Or is there a "correct" way of duplicating my library to the HTPC that will not require a thumbnail rebult each time?

Thanks
Richard

Can't see this issue. Just added some new files (art embedded) and the cover shows on the iPod.

In the new "Tiles/Library Browser" view, when browsing albums...locate on disk external is not working.

File Paths in Handheld Options resets the Playlist folder
to "Playlists"

1) The Muvo only recognizes playlists stored inside a subfolder called PLAYLIST. Trouble is, MC only synchronizes them to the root folder of the player,  so all the file pathnames start with ./
This freezes the player.

Using 11.1.78 now, but
Can't set a "PLAYLIST" folder destination, or any other name.
It resets it to "Playlists" (note the plural. This matters)

Kind of a nasty one here:

Two albums of the same name, one didn't have cover art yet. In the Tiles view of the new browser (browsing by Album) only the one with cover art shows up (the band 311). I tagged that one which was "Live" to "Live (311)" and went into the view scheme where the Live (Warren Haynes Band) album resided and it had been changed to Warren Haynes Band - Live (311).

Dom,

Nomad Jukebox 3 support in MC 11.1 will not support playlists. In 11.1 we provide standartd WMDM support for the Nomad Jukebox 3 series which does not include playlists. In regards to the speed of transfer issue, do you have the latest drivers from Creative installed for your Nomad?

Cover art hasn't been uploading for a few builds for me.  It may or may not be related to the new lower-memory minimizing of MC, since minimizing always makes the transfer go faster for me.

I moved files using the Find and Replace tool, and before the "saving tag changes" status disappeared, I used Find and Replace on the same files again (to get rid of the word "The" from the Artist folder for easier file browsing) and the "saving" status got stuck.  I closed MC and I got an error message saying it couldn't move the files.  When I opened MC again, the library had broken links but the files had the same names and locations as they were before I used the original Find and Replace command.  They also reverted to non-imported songs, even though they were the same files.

Also, every time I analyze songs, I get an error message with all the files I tried to analyze saying they were locked, although my "needs analysis" smartlist doesn't have the files show up anymore.

I can also confirm the ripping error.  I have to close the ripping status box and then click Rip CD from the action window or click Rip Tracks from the CD drive window.

1. Using keyboard to jump to field does not work in "bottom" pane in any view scheme; refferring to the classic view, but doesn't work in the new file list eithr. The selected field just drops down one line. Seems to work in the panes above though.

2. When burning and "decode direct to cd" is enabled, the menu lets you enable "apply DSP settings" when you ave "omit silent sections" enabled. Not sure if this is a new feature really but in the past this wasn't possible and it was auto-corrected after a warning msg. *It just completed a burn this way but the beginning of the tracks are well past the fade into the new song. I'll have to check but the default track marker should be just prior to the fade so if you're skipping through the tracks you start at the beginning of one or just as it is fading into the next track.

3.  Action Window > File Properties > Image  = not working with new view system. My Playing Now plugin doesn't display any Cover Art unless I play files from "Files". ummm...okay the art is showing in the Image window as stated through the Files playback but my Playing Signature isn't showing any cover art; see below.

thanks!
