I chose the options-remote control dialog and pressed start for the plugin IRMAN [inactive]. Then MC hung.

After ending the MC task I restarted MC but MC didn't start anymore. I rebooted and tried again to start MC. Same result. The opening dialog appeared, then disappeared - but MC did not open.

I reinstalled MC 11.101 and again - MC did not open. I searched the registry for IRMAN and finally found an entry "Selected" which I reset to 0 - and then it worked again.

I think that's a serious bug reactivation of MC is quite hard...

My original intention was to find out if I could use my Logitech media pad as remote control? Obviously, this is impossible?

I could be barking up the wrong tree here,
but as IRMan looks at Com Ports, do you have any
PCMCIA modems or anything else weird or wonderful
that could be accessing one of the Comm Ports?

However I don't think IRMan is going to do what you are looking for.
IRMan is a specific product that plugs into a comm port,

I think you'll need something like girder to use your Logitech Pad.

I will take a closer look on girder, thank you.

But the main reason for my post was that by following my actions you get MC hanging and it's not easy to find a way to get it start running again!

I could reproduce that situation again:

Options - Remote Control - Press START (in the first row Plugin IRMAN[Inactive]

That's it! (Probably it works if you have IRMAN)

I think thats a problem with your system not MC. 
On mine it just gives me a message
saying "Error starting IRMan..."

I click OK and it continues to work.
If however you've got a Comm device that looks a little
like IRMan maybe it messes the protocol up causing MC to freeze?
I'm only guessing.

Maybe when the reset all plugins box comes up
there should be an option to disable the IRMan plugin too...
On the other hand it's likely to become much less of a problem
in the future now that very few new computers even
come with comm ports...so not sure it would be worth their effort?

I don't use any COMM device! So I am really surprised this happens not to everyone. So then we should forget about it - I won't do the same mistake twice (and I know the workaround)!
