Is MC11.1 ready?
« on: January 17, 2006, 06:12:16 pm »

I spent the day testing MC11.1.100 with a variety of handhelds and I couldn't find any serious problems.

We'd like to release it.  Any big problems left?

Thanks,

Jim

For the functions I use, all is well.
I do not have an iPod however and that looks like where people are having a few issues.

Next go around, can we work on more audio support?

and maybe when viewing iPod handheld in MC show the photos on the iPod under a separate node (under iPod device on the left) so you can see just the photos and NOT have to scroll to the bottom on the huge "all files" list on the right after highlighting the iPod device's node first.  Seems not to 'good' to just throw the photos in with the audio files at the end of the audio track list.

What about a more user friendly way of importing DVD videos (.vob files)?

For me there is 1 bug left.
I described it in the MC 11.1.101 thread:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=31368.msg215682#msg215682

After that   ......  GO!

No bugs here for me.

But I think there are some design behaviours to study...

The only thing I can think of that I'd like to see changed for 11.1 is that in audio view schemes I use the "show files at bottom" setting, but in video and photo viewschemes I don't usually want that (unless I'm tagging).  Would like that checkmark setting to be remembered with the view schemes so I don't have to toggle it all the time.  I switch back and forth between audio/video schemes quite a bit.

Everything else I can think of feels like it should wait for 12.0.

Also, was there ever a consensus on how the folder.jpg files are going to be handled from now on?  Currently the only way to get them imported into the library is to drag them from windows explorer onto IMAGES in the tree.

yep. Even in .101
Also, I find that MC has never hanged as long as it does now when connecting my iPod. It's so long (over a minute) that I bet a new user would think MC had just crashed. It wasn't the case a few builds ago.

No major problems here.

A couple of small tile browsing tweaks could be made however:

* Random sorting should be added to list currently available under options

* Album tiles should playback in track order by default settings(there used to be an option for this for album thumbnails)

* Show files at bottom option should be customized and remember whether it is up or down for each view/field selection

MC11.1 seems to be better than 11.0 in every way - faster, more stable, more refined UI. So in that sense, totally ready. Worth paying $$$ for.

Might want to give it all a final polish before release - start page, consistency of capitalization, etc.

One tiny thing - the commands for dealing with Cover Art should be in a menu called Cover Art - not Image. MC seems to treat Cover Art and Images differently (ie rotation, etc not available for Cover Art). The Image menu is completely different when right-clicking on an audio file (Cover Art) vs clicking on an image file (Image), so why not just call them different things. Same with the Action Window.

I like it, but would still request that divx wrapped in AVI's could stream instead of needing to be downloaded when connected to a remote library server.  Some of my Divx/XVid AVI's are over a gig and they take a while (even at 100mb) to download and start on any machine other than the "server".  This is probably more a "feature" than a bug.

Other than that gripe, which is something I've had since I started using Media Center (I bought it for APE support anyway, so no big deal), I say this is a "go".  Nice work.

Is it just me, or has Mediacenter been missing a horizontal slide bar for navigating your hard drive forever?  I have a folder structure that makes it quite annoying to drill through to my relevant folders.

I must say... I know it's probably a huge request, but....

I really feel that before you release MC 11.1, it should include a proper Library and Settings migration scheme of some kind.  I've already invested 6 - 8 work hours converting my View Schemes and "Customize Current View" settings so that they work again... and I've still got to do my Video heirarchy (thank god that Image is done, that was a nightmare).

For me... If I (1) didn't  have a second computer with a duplicate, synchable copy of the Library installed that wasn't my primary HTPC (so that I can make the changes and my Wife can still use MC in the living room while I'm working on it), and (2) wasn't quite such a MC zealot, I don't know that I would go through the trouble.  Even though I really enjoy following the beta process with JRiver and helping out with the development of the product, I haven't participated up till now because there was no effective migration scheme.

To me, for a x.1 release of a product, it's simply not acceptable.  I'm personally doing it anyway (manually), but I think you could lose some upgrade customers over it.

This isn't a request line.  There are other threads here for that.  This is a "Are there any fatal problems you know about" line.

I know you'd like to see improvements in many areas.  So would we.  But a critical stage is a release.  We can't pile on features if we're going to release.

Thanks for your patience.

Well, it is already mentioned in another thread but I think the inability to burn a cd when show files is selected is a show stopper.

If Adobe released an upgrade to Photoshop that brought it from CS2 (9.0) to CS2+ (9.1), and it reset all my Pallete positions and other customizations, I'd be pretty perturbed and it would probably cause me to delay my migration.  MC is built for heavy customization, so resetting those things has an even greater impact.

I just would like to see an easier way to create a new root tree branch:

... I understand the need for simplified interface, but the current system is not clear for newbies (and some oldbies too  ;) ). Now new users might not realize that MC is capable of handling various media types at the same time.

At least MC should have a more intuitive way for creating new root branches. Perhaps the option could be in the usual right-click "add view scheme" dialog, e.g. "Make this view scheme a root item" ...

and...

How about the help file? Some parts are quite outdated (... or perhaps you have already done something privately).

If needed, I would be happy to update the "Screen Parts" image I made for 11.0. I could do that next weekend.

EDIT

Actually, I have "All Media" as a root item. Select PN from the tree and add a new view scheme from the top menu: Edit > Add View Scheme.

Heh! That's neat! I tried right-clicking on PN to do the same; didn't work. I used your method, and realised that it was the first time ever that I used the Edit menu to create a viewscheme!!

Secure rip logs still aren't being written to the drive unless you manually "close" the rip progress box. Bug is still present in .103. Not a show stopper, but I ripping my collection of 600+ disks. Spouse ripped about 50 disks and no logs. Had to go back and rip them all over again.  :'(
