iPod locks 11.1; impossible to initialize
« on: February 09, 2006, 06:13:10 am »

I should probably switch back to build .089.  I've been using .095 and support with that version has been shaky at best for me.  With .095, MC would hang just after opening when it tried to detect my 4g iPod.  Either it would pass in a few seconds, or it would hang indefinitely.  Some sort of screwup occurred and I would be unable to upload more than about 10 songs before a lockup would occur.  I downloaded .113 and .116 and both didn't have the starting lockup problem, but if I clicked on the iPod in the drives & devices tree, the window would say "device not found".  If I right click it on the tree, MC would lockup, so I can't initialize with these new builds.

I went to CompUSA and updated with the new January Apple Updater, but that didn't seem to help anything.  Since I haven't seen anyone else is having this problem, I imagine it's yet another win98 issue.

Get the latest build of MC11.1 from Interact.  In Handheld Options, choose advanced, then redetect devices.

Also, make sure no iTunes software is running in the background.  ipodhelper.dll doesn't help.

From Explorer, try renaming the itunesdb file.

If that doesn't work, there may be an iPod related problem.

I've tried to redetect devices but that just resets the name of what MC names the iPod (default is Removable Disk (F:)).  It still says  "device not found" in the window and freezes with a right click (and therefore I can't initialize.  I don't have iTunes;  never did, it doesn't run on Windows98.  I don't have an iTunes.db file because I just ran a restore.  It's not the iPod, it works fine with MC10 (if you call that fine).

Using MC10 does make these builds of 11.1 worse, however.  .116 just crashes with an illegal operation while it detects the iPod.  Happens every time unless the iPod is disconnected prior to launching MC.  Every version of 11.1 that I've used can't work with the iPod unless it is docked prior to launching, even though the "device connected" box pops up if you dock while it's already open (MC just says there is no device and to be sure to connect it and have it turned on).  Deleting the MC10 iTunes.db file strangely doesn't make the problem revert to the original one.  However, going back to build .095 lets me initialize again, but still with the hang (or freeze) when opening as well as uneven sync reliability.

All of this surely stems from an old, overlooked Windows98 problem, especially since my iPod is detected immediately with MC10 without any hangs or freezes.

Please post the output of a log (Help > Configure Debug Logging) after a hang.

Thanks.

In the task manager, look for anything named ipod* and remove it.  ipodhelper, for example.  Uninstall iTunes if you don't use it.

I've never installed iTunes and I don't have any ipodhelper or anything running that would be interfering.

Any progress on my problem?  I downloaded .121 last night and while a right-click in the tree doesen't hang MC anymore, it still says "device not found" and no way to re-initialize.  Redetect devices still doesn't help as well.

I have something to add.  Since trying the teen builds, I would get this message sometimes when I boot:

_____________________________________________
Information

Failed to install package.

More Info: Destination file is in use.
C:\Program Files\Media Center 11\Setup\hh_portable.dll
URL: C:\Program Files\Media Center 11\SETUP\NONE

Would this have anything to do with it?  How do I fix this?

That would explain your problem. I suggest you try the following....

Boot the machine clean. Make sure mediacenter isn't running (check task manager, look for any mediacenter.exe PROCESSES running, kill them if they are).

Reinstall.

If you get the problem again, boot into safe mode and delete the hh_portable.dll in your installed mediacenter (empty the recycle bin too). Reboot, reinstall.

Just tried all that, Bob.  I still get that message after I reboot after install.  I didn't run MC between the end of the installer and reboot, in case that had something to do with it.  No MC processes are running.  Even though the message says the destination file is in use, it doesn't appear to be used because I can move, rename and delete the file at will.

Also, why does MC have a post-reboot install finalization now?  Before that, for me, it would either work or sort of work, which is better than now.

Please, someone, investigate this on a win98 machine.  Without my iPod at work, I have to listen to our maintenence guy slap his table like some Keith Moon wannabe all day.  And it makes me want to kill him.

Try a Windows Update and be sure to get Windows Media Player 10.  We found a couple of days ago that some machines need it for the WMDM components.

I'll download WMP 10, but I won't like it.  Every WMP after 6 has been a slow clunky piece bloatware for me (speaking of bloatware, I found a great alternative to Adobe's Acrobat Reader program that takes only seconds to load at www.foxitsoftware.com.  Just a treat for anyone looking at this thread).

But why would I need WMP 10 now when it worked just a few builds ago?  And isn't an iPod not a WMDM device?

Problem.  WMP 9 is the last version available for Windows98.  I won't try that.

No offense, but it seems like you guys are trying to point the finger at anything else on my computer that isn't MC, even though earlier builds worked fine.  I'm just gonna revert to an older build if this won't get fixed.  It's cool if you don't want to support Windows98 if it's too much of hassle for you guys, but please don't tell me that you do if you don't really so I can save us all the trouble of not posting my problem.  Thanks.

You have to update WMP to the latest available for your OS.  It has critical components that are needed for MC.

Try google and read about WMDM and MTP.  They're part of the future.  We don't have a choice.

This thread also explains a little more: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=26428.0

It sounds like the portable device plugin is failing to load on your Win98 box.

Try running dependencywalker.com on the hh_portable.dll sitting in the MC\Setup folder after an install.

We'll also test on a Win98 box.

Jim is right that WMP installs necessary device detection components.  However, if MC is finding your iPod, it means any WMDM pieces that are needed are already installed and functioning.

There's a sticky thread in this portable forum that says that WMDM does not support the iPod.  And I am absolutely positive this has nothing to do with updated components anymore because that thread you pointed out, Jim, was for 11.0.212, and my iPod has been working with with like 11.1.060 until 11.1.095 or so, with the best support coming from like 11.1.07something.

I downloaded that dependency walker thing, but I'm not sure what to do with it.  There's a hh_portable.dll file in the plugins folder, but in the setup folder, there's a file called hh_portable.mjp.  DW gave an error saying, "No DOS or PE signature found. This file is not a valid 34-bit or 64-bit Windows module."

I ran it on the hh_portable.dll file in the plugins folder and this is what it said:
Error: At least one module has an unresolved import due to a missing export function in an implicitly dependent module.
Warning: At least one delay-load dependency module was not found.

It also says that it can't find apphelp.dll and userenv.dll.
