Media Center 11.1.121
« on: February 14, 2006, 10:50:43 am »

This is the latest version of MC 11.1.  Your MC11.0 license will work with it.  Please post bugs here.  Please start a new thread for anything requiring discussion.  Non-bug posts will be deleted or moved.

PRICES for MC11.0 and 11.1 are here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

This latest build of MC11.1 is here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter111121.exe

11.1.121 (02/14/06)

1. Fixed: Duplicate Podcast episodes are now handled gracefully.
2. Fixed: Deleting files from a handheld (manually or on a sync) could cause a crash.
3. Fixed: Cover art was not working properly over library server.
4. Optimized: Handheld playlist upload is fully threaded. (eliminates pauses after uploading the last file in a sync)
5. Changed: MC shows a wait message when calculating a handheld sync.
6. Fixed: Uninstall could show an error message.
7.  New: Added Dutch to languages (Thanks, bennyd)

11.1.120 (02/13/06)

1. Fixed: Seeking to the end of a file and pressing next at exactly the same time could cause a failure.
2. Fixed: TiVo Total Duration was off by a factor of 1000.
3. NEW: Includes new MPC decoder. (thread safe, decodes latest MPC files, supports 32-bit output, etc.)
4. Fixed: Podcasts were not properly handling international characters.
5. Changed: "Analyze Audio" tool will not try analyzing files that are not played in MC's native playback engine.
6. Fixed: With duplicate Podcast episodes in the database, it was possible to download the same episode repeatedly.
7. Fixed: In some cases, an iPod would not do an OS-level eject because the plugin thread's working directory prevented the eject.
8. Changed: Added "Remove Device" and "Rename Device" to the handheld options dialog.
9. NEW: Send To menu has zone specific playback commands when there are more one configured zone. (allows simple "Preview on headphones" style functionality)

11.1.119 (02/13/2006)

1. Changed: "Clean File Properties" can no longer operate on "File Type" and "Media Type". (changing these can cause other problems)
2. Fixed: iPod playlists would not always be loaded properly. (could show same file multiple times in playlist)
3. NEW: Included Romanian translation file. (thanks Catana Silviu!)
4. Optimized: The playlist upload portion of an iPod sync is much faster.
5. Fixed: Web Media links would not work.
6. Changed: Text in several areas of the program better sizes to hold translated text. (Library view tiles, Action Window, etc.)
7. Changed: MC behaves more logically when pressing next in the last few seconds of a file's playback.

11.1.118 (02/10/06)

1. Optimized: Improved the speed of the display menu when G-Force is installed.
2. Changed: When an iPod (or other device) fails to be loaded, unplugging it and plugging it back in will try to load it again.
3. Changed: Revised the wording when plugging in an iPod that could not be loaded. (no database, etc.)
4. Changed: Revised the message displayed when picking "Handheld Player" in the Action Window when no player is connected.
5. NEW: Podcasts on an iPod are flagged to be skipped during shuffle / and to always get bookmarked. (will only get flagged for podcasts newly uploaded to an iPod)
6. Fixed: One empty playlist could end up on the iPod after a sync.
7. Changed: "Digital TV" tab is no longer displayed in TV Options if no digital TV device is available (the tab caused crashes if selected).
8. Fixed: The "Display" menu could cause a crash.
9. Changed: Removed frame-rate selection from some visualizations.
10. Fixed: After a sync, playlists could fail to get built properly.
11. Fixed: Pausing audio playback, pressing Next, then pressing Next again would cause playback to corrupt when using DirectX output.
12. Fixed: Podcasts were incorrectly computing total disk used, and deleting episodes en masse as a result.

11.1.117 (02/09/06)

1. Changed: "MP4 Source" filter gets higher loading priority than "Haali Media Splitter" in DirectShow playback of m4a files.
2. New: Podcast downloads now use a progress bar to show status.
3. New: Deleted Podcast episodes are shown as deleted and are not automatically downloaded a second time.
4. New: Deleted Podcast episodes can be unmarked as deleted by clicking on their Episode Status.
5. New: Manually requested Podcast episode downloads can be cancelled by clicking on their Episode Status.
6. Fixed: Podcast episode status field was not always updated promptly after a status change.
7. Fixed: Orphaned Podcast episodes were not always purged correctly.
8. Changed: Removed the "Send To" menu from playlist groups in the tree. (since calculating the union of files for lots of child smartlists could be slow)
9. NEW: All thumbnail views adapth their thumbnail sizing to prevent dead-space on the right side. (just like library browser style views do)
10. NEW: Added "Playlists" as a possible startup location to options.
11. Fixed: After stopping and starting playback again, track info pages would not always rebuild to show updated information.
12. Fixed: DVD playback was broken.
13. Fixed: The Reset TiVo Beacon button would crash.
14. Fixed: After failing to load a library server library, MC could offer to restore from a backup instead of simply switching back to the current library.
15. Fixed: Playing images and audio at the same time over library server would not work as expected.
16. Fixed: When starting dual playback of audio and images by double-clicking an image, the desired image wouldn't always start.
17. Changed: Tuned how shuffle works for images during audio + image playback.
18. Changed: mp4 media type can be played in DirectShow. The user must enable it in Options. The default is to use Quicktime.
19. Fixed: Sound recorder crashed at end or recording if simultaneous encoding was not selected.
20. Changed: Improved error reporting and logging for WinTV PVR family TV tuners.

Not sure if this belongs here.

When you delete a Podcast is doesn't go away it stays in the list with "deleted" where "download" use to be. When you download, the word gets chagned to WAITING and the files never get downloaded. On the same machine Thunderbird handles these Podcasts just fine.

Thanks very much for this! Looks good to me, but would it be possible to make MC refresh its window, and respond to "explorer messages" (minimize, maximize or move window)? That would make the operation "feel" much better.

Btw, after my "synching desaster" with 119/120, i did a re-initalize and complete sync with 118, and it worked flawlessly. Right now, i'm synching with 121, and it also looks very good. I double-checked the "dupe import" problem, and it seems it's gone - that's very cool!

Problems with playback on this build. Tried a Playlist of an hour - all mp3 files - all went well till about half way through when there were gaps of up to 35 secs between playing tracks. Also a couple of "stuttering" starts - half a second of the track followed by a couple of seconds silence then the track played all the way through.

Sounds like bandwidth issues. (from network or server playback)

1)  Shoutcast "Tune In" links are not working when openning the pls files directly.  If I "Save" the pls file to the desktop and THEN "open" it, it plays fine.  If I select "open" directly from the initial dialog box, however, MC opens, but nothing happens.  I usually have the "always ask" box UNchecked so that the "Tune In" links just start playing, but this no longer works since MC only plays the files if I "Save/Open" and not if I just "Open."

I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, but it didn't help.  I have another system running 116 that does not have this problem.  I'll try uninstalling 121 and installing 116 on this system to see if it works again, but if somebody else could try some Shoutcast "Tune In" links it would help me out.

UPDATE:  I tried reverting to 116, and I still get the same Shoutcast issue on this system even though 116 does NOT give me this issue on another system.  I'm therefore starting to look into other culprits such as some sort of file association or firewall error.  I'll post to the other thread when I figure this out, but it appears that the Shoutcast issue may in fact NOT be a MC issue.
------------------------------

2)  Media Server is still giving me big gaps between songs I ripped as WAV files.  If I navigate to the songs via the "Audio" branch of the tree, I get the gaps.  If I instead navigate to the exact same files via the "Drives and Devices" branch, I do NOT get the gaps.  This therefore is not a bandwidth issue -- it's specific to playing the songs via the other system's "Library" that Media Server loads.  I get an "Openning" message during the pause that I do NOT get when I use the "Drives and Devices" branch.
-------------------------------

Thanks,

Larry

I'm not sure if this matters or not (I haven't seen any problems so far with this build), but Filename, Filename(name) and Image Filename still come down to a client from a Library Server with colons, backslashes and spaces escaped as ^3a, ^5c and ^20.  The cover art issue reported back in .120 is working, even with the escaped characters, so maybe it isn't something that will be a programmatic problem.

Thx,

-e.

By design, filenames will be escaped when connected to library server.

I am seeing high CPU Usage with this build.
Normally I see 8-14%
This build sits on 45-63%

I have only album art in playing now.
This figure does not decrease whether minimized or not.

Verified Ape's converting to OGG high & normal/high crashing MC when convert finishes. The files appear as Ogg's but MC crashes.

Got one completion w/o crash but "finished conversion" msg window never popped up and another it did.

EDIT -  ape's from one album keep crashing MC...I can upload a few to my server.

Matt - how do we reproduce View Schemes over Library Server now?

I would add the name of the View Scheme to comments field but my schemes overlap and exclude each other; the beauty of [filename]= was really handy. Sorry if I am missing something....

AVI movie audio won't go to other zones.
I started up MC.  Used ctrl-T to switch to zone 2.
Added an avi file to playing now and started playback.
the file appears in "playing now" under zone 2 and zone 1's is empty.
The video is showing in zone 2.
The audio is being routed to zone 1.
Even when I choose to synchronize to all zones, I cannot get any audio to zone 2.

Zone 2 audio playback works fine with mp3 audio files.

Zone audio routing only applies to audio played through MC's audio engine.  Movies and TV do not obey the Options > Playback > Audio settings.

:edit: yeah, i'm a tard.  I should've searched *first*, then posted... There's a few fixes/workarounds for this it seems.. but it would be nice to have an 'official' audioscrobbler plugin.

As of MC 11.1.120 (Was not occuring in .118, and did not download .119), the Audioscrobbler (last.fm) Plugin now crashes MC about halfway through the first song.

After I downloaded .120 and it started crashing, I removed the plugin and re-downloaded/reinstalled the plugin and MC seemed to be fine.  After I downloaded .121, the crash occurred again.  Again I removed the plugin and reinstalled a fresh copy and so far MC seems ok.

I don't have the actual crash dump info, I forgot to copy it to the clipboard.. If it happens again I'll copy it (But it was definitely the audioscrobbler plugin causing the crash... I actually forgot I even had it installed until I viewed the crash details and there was the plugin file causing there error).

BUG? When I'm playing a song, if I click on the AUDIO navigation item in the tree list on the left, it plays a file located in one of my Y album listings -- consistently. So, no matter what file I'm currently playing -- can be anything, if I click on the audio navigation item this one file plays. Very annoying..

I don't use either of these - just straightforward playback to speakers. I'll see if I can replicate this.

Anything like that is not happening to me (or to others, I think). Please start a new thread for finding the reason for such a behavior.

You could try a complete uninstall and reinstall first (use the MC uninstaller). Backup your MC library before uninstalling (File > Library > Backup Library...). Also, if you happen to have a cover art folder inside the MC program path (e.g. as a residue of the old MC versions) you should copy it to a safe place.

I have gathered some links that contain information about the new browsing system here: http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=31891.msg219129#msg219129

I've posted this before: ASF video files are imported with the "Audio" media type. This gave me some headache, because MC tried to sync them to the iPod (conversion disabled, so what's the point in allow these files on an iPod anyways? This also seems like a bug). I only have 17 files of this type, and all of them show this behaviour. They play flawlessly in WMP oder Winamp, so the extension seems to be a "usual" one (was not sure about that).

ASF can be audio or video. Obviously MC didn't detect them correctly (I don't know if it is supposed to be able to do that).

You can manually change the Media Type field to Video here:
Action Window > File Properties > Tag Info > Media Type
(right-click the Tag Info window and enable the Columns To Show > Show All fields option if needed)

Alex B, thanks for this, will try it later. But, of course, it would be much more convenient if MC would detect audio/video by itself, without further user interaction.

Another point is that MC tried to sync the "pseudo-audio" ASF's to the iPod, which it shouldn't do, because this format is in no way supported on the iPod (and i had disabled conversion).

Audio Analysis seems to have gotten slow. I haven't done it in a while so don't know if it's just with this build or has been this way for previous builds. My particular library has @3000 files and I knew there was 1 file that needed analyzing. I made sure the "Skip analyzed files" box was checked and it even identified that "0 / 1 completed". However upon starting the analyze it went agonizingly slow like it was doing every file. I checked the files during the analyze and it wasn't modifying any of the other MP3's so it wasn't changing them. When I saw it go to "1 / 1 completed" I tried clicking Stop but that didn't do anything. It just ignored me like it was frozen until it finally went all the way through 100%. Everything seemed fine after. Something has to be changed so it will actually skip the Done files.

Auto Complete in the artist field is now pretty much useless on my PC.  The drop down always says too many items too list, even when I have typed in characters that I know are only representative of one artist e.g. Aero - only possible artist in my library is Aerosmith.  Could this be returned to how it was?  I never had any speed problems with it and without it there is no point in the menu even dropping down...

MC crashes with me after some seconds of playback, its says MC has encountered a problem and needs to be closed, send or dont send!

For me this was the same, I uininstalled the Audioscrobbler plugin and the problems dissapeared.

I've some problems with the album-cover-art. Sometimes there are missing and sometimes they are mixed up.

I think "move disk file", and "rename from tags" is malfunctioning. I just tried it, and it was only the filename tag which was changed--Not the actual file!

Verified Ape's converting to OGG high & normal/high crashing MC when convert finishes. The files appear as Ogg's but MC crashes.

EDIT -  ape's from one album keep crashing MC...I can upload a few to my server.
