Album not synching from tags
« on: February 28, 2006, 02:36:16 pm »

I can't seem to get the 'Album' field to synch from tags.
I update the ID3 tags using another application (ID3-TagIt), but when i perform "Update Library from Tags", the album field stays the same. Other items (Artist, Title, Comment) update fine.

Any ideas of what i am doing wrong?
(using MC 11.1)

Use Action Window > File Properties > File Type Info to view a complete tag dump.

Ooh, we may be getting somewhere...
Here is an example of the dump:

ID3v1 Tag: (128 bytes)
Name: Symphony No. 1: Adagio molto -
   Artist: Beethoven
Album: Symphony No. 1 in C major Op.
   Year: 1963
Comment: EAC; LAME v3.97b2 VBR q2
   Track #: 1
   Genre: Classical (32)

ID3v2 Tag: (2376 bytes)
  TCON (Content type): Classical
  TRCK (Track number/Position ..): 01/04
TENC (Encoded by): Exact Audio Copy   (Secure mode)
TALB (Album/Movie/Show title): Symphony No. 1 in C major Op. 21
  TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Solo..): Beethoven
TIT2 (Title/songname/content..): Symphony No. 1: Adagio molto - Allegro con brio
  TYER (Year): 1963
COMM (Comments): EAC; LAME v3.97b2 VBR q2
  TSSE (Software/Hardware and ..): LAME v3.97 (beta)
  TIT2 (Title/songname/content..): Symphony No 1 in C major op 21; 1. Adagio molto - Allegro con brio
TPE1 (Lead performer(s)/Solo..): Ludwig van Beethoven
  TALB (Album/Movie/Show title): 9 Symphonien - Disc 1 of 5
  TYER (Year): 1963
  TRCK (Track number/Position ..): 1

Why are there 2 'TALB' entries?
One is the one I entered (and want displayed by MC) : Symphony No. 1 in C major Op. 21
and the 2nd is being displayed is: 9 Symphonien - Disc 1 of 5

ID3-TagIt may be writing two albums.

Your life may be easier if you used MC for ripping and tagging.  It has arguably the most secure ripping engine (when enabled) and has fully flexible LAME encoding using the latest recommend version of LAME.

One thing that might get me to switching for ripping would be if jriver used stereo rather than joint stereo by default.

Another would be honoring the settings of the source file when converting.

Just a couple of suggestions...

If you mean LAME MP3 encodings, MC uses the recommended settings that give the best possible MP3 audio quality at the given quality level or target bitrate. MP3 is always a compromise since it is a lossy format. "Stereo" instead of "Joint Stereo" leaves less room for audio signal. LAME joint stereo uses practically lossless stereo coupling. Old Fraunhofer encoders used a joint stereo system that spoiled stereo imaging at lower bitrates, but that has nothing to do with the system used in LAME. More information is e.g. here: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=15024

For special purposes any standard LAME command line string can be used.

Oh, that hurts!

Sorry! I thought you'd say that. Hey, I like lots about the software, and will continue using it.

(but while I do have your attention....I would like MC much better if it would write the 'rating' into the 'popularity' tag as opposed to the 'comment' field  ;)- http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=32117.0] )

Just for the record, I figured out what went on.
The culprit was EAC and the user :)

I used LAME settings are recommended by hydrogenaudio:
-V 2 --vbr-new --id3v2-only --pad-id3v2 --ta "%a" --tt "%t" --tl "%g" --ty "%y" --tn "%n"
but also had the EAC set to pad ID3v2 tags by 4kB, which along with the '--pad-id3v2' switch caused the problem.

problem solved.
